Blip10000: a social video dataset containing SPUG content for tagging and retrieval
The increasing amount of digital multimedia content available is inspiring potential new types of user interaction with video data. Users want to easilyfind the content by searching and browsing. For this reason, techniques are needed that allow automatic categorisation, searching the content and linking to related information.
In this work, we present a dataset that contains comprehensive semi-professional user generated (SPUG) content, including audiovisual content, user-contributed metadata, automatic speech recognition transcripts, automatic shot boundary les, and social information for multiple `social levels'. We describe the principal characteristics of this dataset and present results that have been achieved on different tasks
Structural and Magnetic Properties of Trigonal Iron
First principles calculations of the electronic structure of trigonal iron
were performed using density function theory. The results are used to predict
lattice spacings, magnetic moments and elastic properties; these are in good
agreement with experiment for both the bcc and fcc structures. We find however,
that in extracting these quantities great care must be taken in interpreting
numerical fits to the calculated total energies. In addition, the results for
bulk iron give insight into the properties of thin iron films. Thin films grown
on substrates with mismatched lattice constants often have non-cubic symmetry.
If they are thicker than a few monolayers their electronic structure is similar
to a bulk material with an appropriately distorted geometry, as in our trigonal
calculations. We recast our bulk results in terms of an iron film grown on the
(111) surface of an fcc substrate, and find the predicted strain energies and
moments accurately reflect the trends for iron growth on a variety of

Efficient quantum key distribution scheme with nonmaximally entangled states
We propose an efficient quantum key distribution scheme based on
entanglement. The sender chooses pairs of photons in one of the two equivalent
nonmaximally entangled states randomly, and sends a sequence of photons from
each pair to the receiver. They choose from the various bases independently but
with substantially different probabilities, thus reducing the fraction of
discarded data, and a significant gain in efficiency is achieved. We then show
that such a refined data analysis guarantees the security of our scheme against

Asymptotic stability, concentration, and oscillation in harmonic map heat-flow, Landau-Lifshitz, and Schroedinger maps on R^2
We consider the Landau-Lifshitz equations of ferromagnetism (including the
harmonic map heat-flow and Schroedinger flow as special cases) for degree m
equivariant maps from R^2 to S^2. If m \geq 3, we prove that near-minimal
energy solutions converge to a harmonic map as t goes to infinity (asymptotic
stability), extending previous work down to degree m = 3. Due to slow spatial
decay of the harmonic map components, a new approach is needed for m=3,
involving (among other tools) a "normal form" for the parameter dynamics, and
the 2D radial double-endpoint Strichartz estimate for Schroedinger operators
with sufficiently repulsive potentials (which may be of some independent
interest). When m=2 this asymptotic stability may fail: in the case of
heat-flow with a further symmetry restriction, we show that more exotic
asymptotics are possible, including infinite-time concentration (blow-up), and

Benthic invertebrate and microbial biodiversity in sub-tropical urban rivers:Correlations with environmental variables and emerging chemicals
Urban rivers often function as sinks for various contaminants potentially placing the benthic communities at risk of exposure. We performed a comprehensive biological survey of the benthic macroinvertebrate and bacterial community compositions in six rivers from the suburb to the central urban area of Guangzhou city (South China), and evaluated their correlations with emerging organic contaminants, heavy metals and nutrients. Overall, the benthic macroinvertebrate community shifted from molluscs to oligochaete from the suburban to the central urban rivers that receive treated and untreated sewage. An exception was the site in the Sha River where chironomids were most abundant. The differences in macroinvertebrate community assemblages were significantly associated with chromium, total phosphorus, galaxolide, triclosan and sand content in the sediment. There was no significant difference in benthic macroinvertebrate composition between the dry and wet season. As assessed by double constrained ordination, sexual reproduction was the only trait of benthic macroinvertebrates that showed a significant correlation with pollution variables, as it was significantly positively correlated with chromium and total phosphorus. This suggests that r-strategist occurs in polluted sampling sites. The benthic bacterial community composition showed a significant difference between seasons and among the Liuxi River, Zhujiang River and central urban rivers. The differences in community composition of the benthic bacteria were significantly correlated with galaxolide, total phosphorus, lead and triclosan. These results suggest that input of treated and untreated sewage significantly altered the benthic macroinvertebrate and bacterial community compositions in urban rivers.</p

Higgs-Boson Production Associated with a Single Bottom Quark in Supersymmetric QCD
Due to the enhancement of the couplings between Higgs boson and bottom quarks
in the minimal sypersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the cross section of the
process pp(p\bar{p}) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b})+X at hadron colliders can be
considerably enhanced. We investigated the production of Higgs boson associated
with a single high-p_T bottom quark via subprocess bg(\bar{b}g) \to
h^0b(h^0\bar{b}) at hadron colliders including the next-to-leading order (NLO)
QCD corrections in MSSM. We find that the NLO QCD correction in the MSSM
reaches 50%-70% at the LHC and 60%-85% at the Fermilab Tevatron in our chosen

A Multifractal Analysis of Asian Foreign Exchange Markets
We analyze the multifractal spectra of daily foreign exchange rates for
Japan, Hong-Kong, Korea, and Thailand with respect to the United States Dollar
from 1991 to 2005. We find that the return time series show multifractal
spectrum features for all four cases. To observe the effect of the Asian
currency crisis, we also estimate the multifractal spectra of limited series
before and after the crisis. We find that the Korean and Thai foreign exchange
markets experienced a significant increase in multifractality compared to
Hong-Kong and Japan. We also show that the multifractality is stronge related
to the presence of high values of returns in the series
Reducing the communication complexity with quantum entanglement
We propose a probabilistic two-party communication complexity scenario with a
prior nonmaximally entangled state, which results in less communication than
that is required with only classical random correlations. A simple all-optical

Effects of macroscopic polarization in III-V nitride multi-quantum-wells
Huge built-in electric fields have been predicted to exist in wurtzite III-V
nitrides thin films and multilayers. Such fields originate from heterointerface
discontinuities of the macroscopic bulk polarization of the nitrides. Here we
discuss the background theory, the role of spontaneous polarization in this
context, and the practical implications of built-in polarization fields in
nitride nanostructures. To support our arguments, we present detailed
self-consistent tight-binding simulations of typical nitride QW structures in
