Inclusive production of neutral strange particles in {Mathematical expression} interactions at 70 GeV/c

    No full text
The inclusive production of K s 0, Λ and {Mathematical expression} particles is investigated in 70 GeV/c {Mathematical expression} interactions in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. Differential cross-sections are studied and compared with corresponding data at surrounding energies. Differences with pp data obtained at the same energy allow an estimate of the K s 0, production cross-section in annihilation processes. Evidence is also given for central {Mathematical expression} production. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

A search for direct electron production in pp interactions at 70GeV/c

    No full text
A search for directly produced electrons in 70 GeV/c pp interactions has been performed using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen filled track sensitive target surrounded by a hydrogen/neon blanket. No candidates for single electron production with momentum pe>500 MeV/c were found in a sample of 66,000 primary interactions. This result places an upper limit of 2.5 μb on the cross section for single e± production at the 90% confidence level. The corresponding upper limit on the charmed particle production cross section in 14 μb. From the observation of 7 events producing an e+e- pair with mass, {Mathematical expression} the e±/π± ratio from this source is estimated to be (0.7±0.2)×10-4. © 1981 Springer-Verlag.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Charged particle and π0 multiplicity distributions and the annihilation properties of {Mathematical expression}p interactions at 70 GeV/c

The elastic and inelastic {Mathematical expression}p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 and f2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10-2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is {Mathematical expression}. The {Mathematical expression}p-pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 and f2A--=-1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast {Mathematical expression} to {Mathematical expression} production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11. © 1982 Springer-Verlag.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Inclusive φ production in K+p interactions at 70 GeV/c

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K+p interactions at 70 GeV/c in the kaon fragmentation x>0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K±→φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s-quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ+ state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed. © 1982.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
