A simple model for quasar density evolution
It is widely agreed upon that AGN and Quasars are driven by gas accretion
onto a supermassive black hole. The origin of the latter however still remains
an open question. In this work we present the results of an extremely simple
cosmological model combined with an evolutionary scenario in which both the
formation of the black hole as well as the gas accretion onto it are triggered
by major mergers of gas-rich galaxies. Despite its very generous approximations
our model reproduces the quasar density evolution in remarkable agreement with

Simulating `Complex' Problems with Quantum Monte Carlo
We present a new quantum Monte Carlo algorithm suitable for generically
complex problems, such as systems coupled to external magnetic fields or anyons
in two spatial dimensions. We find that the choice of gauge plays a nontrivial
role, and can be used to reduce statistical noise in the simulation.
Furthermore, it is found that noise can be greatly reduced by approximate
cancellations between the phases of the (gauge dependent) statistical flux and

Loneliness, social relations and health and wellbeing in deprived communities
There is growing policy concern about the extent of loneliness in advanced societies, and its
prevalence among various social groups. This study looks at loneliness among people living in
deprived communities, where there may be additional barriers to social engagement including low
incomes, fear of crime, poor services and transient populations. The aim was to examine the
prevalence of loneliness, and also its associations with different types of social contacts and forms of
social support, and its links to self-reported health and wellbeing in the population group. The
method involved a cross-sectional survey of 4,302 adults across 15 communities, with the data
analysed using multinomial logistic regression controlling for sociodemographics, then for all other
predictors within each domain of interest. Frequent feelings of loneliness were more common
among those who: had contact with family monthly or less; had contact with neighbours weekly or
less; rarely talked to people in the neighbourhood; and who had no available sources of practical or
emotional support. Feelings of loneliness were most strongly associated with poor mental health,
but were also associated with long-term problems of stress, anxiety and depression, and with low
mental wellbeing, though to a lesser degree. The findings are consistent with a view that situational
loneliness may be the product of residential structures and resources in deprived areas. The findings
also show that neighbourly behaviours of different kinds are important for protecting against
loneliness in deprived communities. Familiarity within the neighbourhood, as active acquaintance
rather than merely recognition, is also important. The findings are indicative of several mechanisms
that may link loneliness to health and wellbeing in our study group: loneliness itself as a stressor;
lonely people not responding well to the many other stressors in deprived areas; and loneliness as
the product of weak social buffering to protect against stressors
Sources of intrinsic rotation in the low flow ordering
A low flow, gyrokinetic formulation to obtain the intrinsic
rotation profiles is presented. The momentum conservation equation in the low
flow ordering contains new terms, neglected in previous first principles
formulations, that may explain the intrinsic rotation observed in tokamaks in
the absence of external sources of momentum. The intrinsic rotation profile
depends on the density and temperature profiles and on the up-down asymmetry.Comment: 20 page
Dark mammoth trunks in the merging galaxy NGC 1316 and a mechanism of cosmic double helices
NGC 1316 is a giant, elliptical galaxy containing a complex network of dark,
dust features. The morphology of these features has been examined in some
detail using a Hubble Space Telescope, Advanced Camera for Surveys image. It is
found that most of the features are constituted of long filaments. There also
exist a great number of dark structures protruding inwards from the filaments.
Many of these structures are strikingly similar to elephant trunks in H II
regions in the Milky Way Galaxy, although much larger. The structures, termed
mammoth trunks, generally are filamentary and often have shapes resembling the
letters V or Y. In some of the mammoth trunks the stem of the Y can be resolved
into two or more filaments, many of which showing signs of being intertwined. A
model of the mammoth trunks, related to a recent theory of elephant trunks, is
proposed. Based on magnetized filaments, the model is capable of giving an
account of the various shapes of the mammoth trunks observed, including the

Probing Yukawian Gravitational Potential by Numerical Simulations. II. Elliptical Galaxies
Since the Newtonian gravitation is largely used to model with success the
structures of the universe, such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies, for
example, a way to probe and constrain alternative theories, in the weak field
limit, is to apply them to model the structures of the universe. We then
modified the well known Gadget-2 code to probe alternative theories of
gravitation through galactic dynamics. In particular, we modified the Gadget-2
code to probe alternatives theories whose weak field limits have a Yukawa-like
gravitational potential. As a first application of this modified Gadget-2 code
we simulate the evolution of elliptical galaxies. These simulations show that
galactic dynamics can be used to constrain the parameters associated with

to Yukawa-like potentials instead of the Newtonian potential. Since the
