A general treatment of the various thermal resistances of a system composed of a dirty copper covered superconducting wire immersed in a superfluid helium bath is given. In most cases it is found that agreement with theory is good when the experimental arrangement is well defined, with the exception of the Kapitza resistance between solids and helium II.Nous présentons une discussion générale sur les résistances thermiques du système composé d'un fil supraconducteur sale entouré de cuivre, l'ensemble plongé dans un bain d'hélium superfluide. DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERISATION OF A POINT ULTRASONIC DETECTOR BY ACOUSTIC MICROSCOPY
We show results for a new technique used to image the vibrations of a piezoelectric resonator using an acoustic microscope. This method is used to characterise the spatial response of a point POGO detector used as one electrode on a LiNbO3 transducer. Possible application to attenuation measurements in liquids is demonstrated
ULTRASONIC STUDY OF PHASE TRANSITIONS BY ACOUSTIC MICROSCOPY
The technique of Acoustic materials signatures involves displacement of the lens of an acoustic microscope towards the specimen surface under examination. The resulting interference of the directly reflected wave and the leaky wave re-emitted from the surface gives rise to a series of interference fringes from which the average Rayleigh wave velocity can be deduced. The technique has been used for the study of the phase transition in strontium Titanate at 105 K in order to evaluate its usefulness for the study of phase transitions by ultrasonic techniques
ACOUSTOELECTRIC INTERACTION IN p-InSb AT LOW TEMPERATURE
We have measured the ultrasonic attenuation in p-InSb in the range 1 - 20 K in the 30 - 600 MHz frequency range under magnetic fields up to 7T, concurrently with magnetoresistance measurements. Both the relaxation peak observed near 10 K and the low temperature field dependence are governed by the piezoelectric interaction and both effects are in good agreement with the acoustoelectric theory of Hutson and White
MAGNETIC FIELD DEPENDENT RELAXATION TIME IN p-InSb AT LOW TEMPERATURES
We have observed a magnetic field dependent relaxation time in p-InSb at low temperatures (~lOK) where the electrical conduction is by free holes in the valence band. The relaxation peak is only observed in nondegenerate specimens for those acoustic modes which are piezoelectrically active. The results are compared with the acousto-electric theory of Hutson and White and found to be in substantial agreement
We give full details of the calculation of the transmission coefficient of acoustic waves between two media. The numerical results are collected in the form of tables and figures for different values of the ratio of the densities and longitudinal sound velocities for a value of Poisson's ratio of 0.33. The theoretical values of the thermal contact resistance are compared with those determined experimentally by a method involving pulsed heating of thin metallic films deposited on insulating substrates. Our measurements are in accord with those first obtained by Weiss using this method and give a good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.
ATTENUATION OF A STATIC POLARIZATION ECHO BY 4He FILM
We have measured by the phonon echo technique the attenuation of an adsorbed 4He film on silica powder against pressure at 35 MHz and low temperatures. The attenuation curves present the typical shape of a multilayer adsorption isotherm of type II according to the BET classification. Because of relatively high RF power no onset of superfluidity has been observed in these films. The attenuation decreases with temperature following the normal viscosity and thermal conductivity contributions to the ultrasonic absorption by 4He
