    Down the Allegash

Ambajemackomus, Chesuncook, Umbazooksis-are some of the tongue twisters we struggled with before we really got on the down grade of the alluring Allegash. These are Maine lakes, bewitching and otherwise; enticing to canoers. Twelve of us came up in a truck from Medomac Lake near Rockland with our beds and a ton of the choicest grub. As we whisked through old Bangor the bells were calling to morning worship; at Foxcroft we stopped for pork chops, coffee and pie; at Greenville we refreshed with ice cream and sent souvenir post cards. On that glorious Sunday afternoon we skirted the inimitable Moosehead Lake, almost in the shadow of great Katahdin, darted through spruce and birch for the Ripogenus Dam which bars the south end of Chesuncook Lake. At our approach, deer, fox and grouse, sauntering along the lonely forest highway, were startled from their day dreaming and scurried into the thicket with as much surprise as our own. This trip comes as a fitting climax to boys, many of whom have spent several seasons at Medomac Camp for Boys at Washington, Maine

GILMOUR BEYERS MACDONALD was born in Carleton, Nebraska, March 9, 1883, the fourth son of a Scotch Presbyterian Minister. His parents were John M. and Janet Piercy MacDonald. His living brothers are Kenneth of Missoula, Mont. and Rosmond of Nahant, Mass. Another brother, George, lived from 1875 until 1953. In the course of changing pastorates the parents moved from Hubbell to Hopewell, then Unadilla and finally to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1887, where the boys completed theh\u27 schooling. While a high school student in Lincoln and later in the University of Nebraska, Gilmour was active in basketball, football, and pole vaulting

Carl Alwin Schenck and The Biltmore Forest

THE attempted beginnings of technical forestry education and one of the very first applications of good forestry in America were associated with an unexpected and unavoidable chain of circumstances. In 1890 the wealthy George Vanderbilt, the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who amassed a fortune in railroad development, bought a large tract of land in the mountainous section near Asheville, North Carolina, built a French castle, developed and landscaped the environs and invited Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck, a German forester, to come to America and direct the management and improvement of the forested portion. Out of the first purchase of nearly 12,000 acre unit a net area of 7,280 ( 4) acres was to become a demonstration to all near and far that the harvesting of forest crops in this country could be conducted and controlled in such a way as to secure perpetuation of the forest, prevent unguided exploitation and devastation, and stave off the threatened timber famine

Key Success Factors in Health-related Food Marketing: A Case Study Approach

    Get PDF
Every now and then, astonishing success stories can be observed on the food market. Many of the recent examples make reference to health characteristics and arguments. In order to analyse the possibly underlying success factors, an empirical case study approach was chosen. 27 successful European Union food marketing cases were purposively sampled from the database of renowned marketing effectiveness awards as well as following a series of food market expert interviews. Success factors were analyzed in a two-step approach, first for each case and then in a case-by-case comparison structured with a card sorting method. Six groups of success factors emerged from the analysis and named "data and knowledge", "emotions", "endorsement", "media", "community" and "why and how". Several success factors appeared to be of specific importance for the issue of health characteristics and arguments. It is concluded that considering the applicability of these case derived success factors might be a recommendable way of improving food marketing campaigns, especially when referencing to health in the communication.Health Economics and Policy, Marketing,

Entropy of Thermally Excited Black Rings

A string theory description of near extremal black rings is proposed. The entropy is computed and the thermodynamic properties are derived for a large family of black rings that have not yet been constructed in supergravity. It is also argued that the most general black ring in N=8 supergravity has 21 parameters up to duality.Comment: 17 pages; v2: minor edits and refs adde

    D1-D5 on ALE Space

We construct a two-dimensional N=(0,4) quiver gauge theory on D1-brane probing D5-branes on ALE space, and study its IR behavior. This can be thought of as a gauged linear sigma model for the NS5-branes on ALE space.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, lanlmac; v2: reference adde

    Tachyon condensation on brane sphalerons

We consider a sphaleron solution in field theory that provides a toy model for unstable D-branes of string theory. We investigate the tachyon condensation on a Dp-brane. The localized modes, including a tachyon, arise in the spectrum of a sphaleron solution of a \phi^4 field theory on M^{p+1}\times S^1. We use these modes to find a multiscalar tachyon potential living on the sphaleron world-volume. A complete cancelation between brane tension and the minimum of the tachyon potential is found as the size of the circle becomes small.Comment: To appear in JHEP, 13 pages, 2 eps figures, minor changes and references adde

Brane Decay and Death of Open Strings

We show how open strings cease to propagate when unstable D-branes decay. The information on the propagation is encoded in BSFT two-point functions for arbitrary profiles of open string excitations. We evaluate them in tachyon condensation backgrounds corresponding to (i) static spatial tachyon kink (= lower dimensional BPS D-brane) and (ii) homogeneous rolling tachyon. For (i) the propagation is restricted to the directions along the tachyon kink, while for (ii) all the open string excitations cease to propagate at late time and are subject to a collapsed light cone characterized by Carrollian contraction of Lorentz group.Comment: 19 pages, published version (typos corrected, a reference added

Open String Fluctuations in AdS with and without Torsion

The equations of motion and boundary conditions for the fluctuations around a classical open string, in a curved space-time with torsion, are considered in compact and world-sheet covariant form. The rigidly rotating open strings in Anti de Sitter space with and without torsion are investigated in detail. By carefully analyzing the tangential fluctuations at the boundary, we show explicitly that the physical fluctuations (which at the boundary are combinations of normal and tangential fluctuations) are finite, even though the world-sheet is singular there. The divergent 2-curvature thus seems less dangerous than expected, in these cases. The general formalism can be straightforwardly used also to study the (bosonic part of the) fluctuations around the closed strings, recently considered in connection with the AdS/CFT duality, on AdS_5 \times S^5 and AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4.Comment: 19 pages, Late
