    A skyrmion-based spin-torque nano-oscillator

A model for a spin-torque nano-oscillator based on the self-sustained oscillation of a magnetic skyrmion is presented. The system involves a circular nanopillar geometry comprising an ultrathin film free magnetic layer with a strong Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction and a polariser layer with a vortex-like spin configuration. It is shown that spin-transfer torques due to current flow perpendicular to the film plane leads to skyrmion gyration that arises from a competition between geometric confinement due to boundary edges and the vortex-like polarisation of the spin torques. A phenomenology for such oscillations is developed and quantitative analysis using micromagnetics simulations is presented. It is also shown that weak disorder due to random anisotropy variations does not influence the main characteristics of the steady-state gyration.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

A criterion for the nature of the superconducting transition in strongly interacting field theories : Holographic approach

It is beyond the present techniques based on perturbation theory to reveal the nature of phase transitions in strongly interacting field theories. Recently, the holographic approach has provided us with an effective dual description, mapping strongly coupled conformal field theories to classical gravity theories. Resorting to the holographic superconductor model, we propose a general criterion for the nature of the superconducting phase transition based on effective interactions between vortices. We find "tricritical" points in terms of the chemical potential for U(1) charges and an effective Ginzburg-Landau parameter, where vortices do not interact to separate the second order (repulsive) from the first order (attractive) transitions. We interpret the first order transition as the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, arguing that it is relevant to superconducting instabilities around quantum criticality.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Photoproduction off the nucleon revisited: Evidence for a narrow N(1688) resonance?

Revised analysis of Σ\Sigma beam asymmetry for the η\eta photoproduction on the free proton reveals a structure at W∼1.69W\sim 1.69 GeV. Fit of the experimental data based on the E429 solution of the SAID partial wave analysis suggests a narrow (Γ≤25\Gamma \leq 25 MeV) resonance. Possible candidates are P11,P13P_{11}, P_{13}, or D13D_{13} resonances. The result is considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a bump-like structure at W∼1.67−1.68W\sim 1.67 - 1.68 GeV in the quasi-free η\eta photoproduction on the neutron.Comment: Contribution to the Workshop on the Physics of the Excited Nucleons NSTAR2007, Bonn, Germany, Sept. 5 - 8 2007.
