Surprising variations in the rotation of the chemically peculiar stars CU Virginis and V901 Orionis

CU Vir and V901 Ori belong among these few magnetic chemically peculiar stars whose rotation periods vary on timescales of decades. We aim to study the stability of the periods in CU Vir and V901 Ori using all accessible observational data containing phase information. We collected all available relevant archived observations supplemented with our new measurements of these stars and analysed the period variations of the stars using a novel method that allows for the combination of data of diverse sorts. We found that the shapes of their phase curves were constant, while the periods were changing. Both stars exhibit alternating intervals of rotational braking and acceleration. The rotation period of CU Vir was gradually shortening until the year 1968, when it reached its local minimum of 0.52067198 d. The period then started increasing, reaching its local maximum of 0.5207163 d in the year 2005. Since that time the rotation has begun to accelerate again. We also found much smaller period changes in CU Vir on a timescale of several years. The rotation period of V901 Ori was increasing for the past quarter-century, reaching a maximum of 1.538771 d in the year 2003, when the rotation period began to decrease. A theoretically unexpected alternating variability of rotation periods in these stars would remove the spin-down time paradox and brings a new insight into structure and evolution of magnetic upper-main-sequence stars.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Multi-element analysis (Pb, Al, Fe) of Antarctic flora using HR-CS ETAAS with an extended working range

This paper introduces a new method for the simultaneous determination of lead, aluminum, and iron in plant samples using high-resolution continuum source electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS ETAAS). The method is suitable for covering a wide range of concentrations for all three elements, by utilizing two spectral lines for Al and employing the wavelength-selected absorbance (WSA) approach, which combines the reading of absorbance signals at both the central and wing parts of the spectral lines. The method was validated against certified reference materials and was then applied in a large-scale analysis of Antarctic flora collected from Nelson Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The method was found to be a useful biomonitoring tool for assessing Pb pollution in various plant materials, including lichens, mosses, grass and mushrooms, while Al and Fe contents may serve as normalizing elements in calculations of environmental indices. The observed Pb levels in lichens (median content 0.19 mg Pb/kg) were lower than those reported in other Antarctic regions. These findings indicate that the Stansbury Peninsula on Nelson Island is relatively unaffected by local pollution, compared to other Antarctic regions, and that the data might serve as an example of background levels in the South Shetland Islands

7siSeveral trace elements discharged by the petrochemical industry are toxic to humans and the ecosystem. In this study, we assessed airborne trace elements in the vicinity of the Map Ta Phut petrochemical industrial complex in Thailand by transplanting the lichen Parmotrema tinctorum to eight industrial, two rural, and one clean air sites between October 2013 and June 2014. After 242 days, the concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Ti, V, and Zn in lichens at most industrial sites were higher than those at the rural and the control sites; in particular, As, Cu, Mo, Sb, V, and Zn were significantly higher than at the control site (p < 0.05). Contamination factors (CFs) indicated that Cd, Cu, Mo, and Sb, which have severe health impacts, heavily contaminated at most industrial sites. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that most elements were associated with industry, with lesser contributions from traffic and agriculture. Based on the pollution load indexes (PLIs), two industrial sites were highly polluted, five were moderately polluted, and one had a low pollution level, whereas the pollution load at the rural sites was comparable to background levels. This study reinforces the utility of lichens as cost-effective biomonitors of airborne elements, suitable for use in developing countries, where adequate numbers of air monitoring instruments are unavailable due to financial, technical, and policy constraints.partially_openopenBoonpeng, Chaiwat; Polyiam, Wetchasart; Sriviboon, Chutima; Sangiamdee, Duangkamon; Watthana, Santi; Nimis, Pier Luigi; Boonpragob, KansriBoonpeng, Chaiwat; Polyiam, Wetchasart; Sriviboon, Chutima; Sangiamdee, Duangkamon; Watthana, Santi; Nimis, Pierluigi; Boonpragob, Kansr
