Structure and Phase Transitions of Alkyl Chains on Mica
We use molecular dynamics as a tool to understand the structure and phase
transitions [Osman et. al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2000, 104, 4433; 2002, 106, 653] in
alkylammonium micas. The consistent force field 91 is extended for accurate
simulation of mica and related minerals. We investigate mica sheets with 12
octadecyltrimethylammonium (C18) ions or 12 dioctadecyldimethylammonium (2C18)
ions, respectively, as single and layered structures at different temperatures
with periodicity in the xy plane by NVT dynamics. The alkylammonium ions reside
preferably above the cavities in the mica surface with an aluminum-rich
boundary. The nitrogen atoms are 380 to 390 pm distant to the superficial
silicon-aluminum plane. With increasing temperature, rearrangements of C18 ions
on the mica surface are found, while 2C18 ions remain tethered due to geometric
restraints. We present basal-plane spacings in the duplicate structures, tilt
angles of the alkyl chains, and gauche-trans ratios to analyze the chain
conformation. Also, the individual phase transitions of the two systems on
heating are explained. Where experimental data are available, the agreement is
very good. We propose a geometric parameter lamba for the saturation of the
surface with alkyl chains, which determines the preferred self-assembly
pattern, i.e., islands, intermediate, or continuous. Lambda also determines the
tilt angles in continuous layers on mica or other surfaces. The thermal

Theory of ice premelting in porous media
Premelting describes the confluence of phenomena that are responsible for the
stable existence of the liquid phase of matter in the solid region of its bulk
phase diagram. Here we develop a theoretical description of the premelting of
water ice contained in a porous matrix, made of a material with a melting
temperature substantially larger than ice itself, to predict the amount of
liquid water in the matrix at temperatures below its bulk freezing point. Our
theory combines the interfacial premelting of ice in contact with the matrix,
grain boundary melting in the ice, and impurity and curvature induced
premelting, the latter occurring in regions which force the ice-liquid
interface into a high curvature configuration. These regions are typically
found at points where the matrix surface is concave, along contact lines of a
grain boundary with the matrix, and in liquid veins. Both interfacial
premelting and curvature induced premelting depend on the concentration of
impurities in the liquid, which, due to the small segregation coefficient of
impurities in ice are treated as homogeneously distributed in the premelted
liquid. Our principal result is an equation for the fraction of liquid in the
porous medium as a function of the undercooling, which embodies the combined
effects of interfacial premelting, curvature induced premelting, and
impurities. The result is analyzed in detail and applied to a range of

Pore Narrowing and Formation of Ultrathin Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Layers in Ceramic Membranes by Chemical Vapor Deposition/Electrochemical Vapor Deposition
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and electrochemical vapor deposition (EVD) have been applied to deposit yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) on porous ceramic media. The experimental results indicate that the location of YSZ deposition can be varied from the surface of the substrates to the inside of the substrates by changing the CVD/EVD experimental conditions, i.e., the concentration ratio of the reactant vapors. The deposition width is strongly dependent on the deposition temperature used. The deposition of YSZ inside the pores resulted in pore narrowing and eventually pore closure, which was measured by using permpor-ometry. However, deposition of YSZ on top of porous ceramic substrates (outside the pores) did not result in a reduction of the average pore size. Ultrathin, dense YSZ layers on porous ceramic substrates can be obtained by suppressing the EVD layer growth process after pore closure
Renormalization group and other calculations for the oneâdimensional spinâ1/2 dimerized Heisenberg antiferromagnet
A zero-temperature renormalization group (RG) approach is applied to the one-dimensional, spin-1/2 anti ferromagnetic Heisenberg dimerized (alternating) chain. Specifically, the ground state energy and lowest-lying spectral excitations are examined. The calculation indicates the existence of a gap in the spectrum of the dimerized chain which vanishes only in the limit of a uniform spin chain in contrast to a recent Green\u27s function approach. The RG results are in reasonable agreement with numerical extrapolations on the exact eigenvalue spectrum of finite chains of up to 12 spins. Both methods are compared with several other approximate treatments of the Heisenberg system. and tested by comparison with exact results for the spin-1/2 XY dimerized chain
Eine interessante fossile Flora im tiefen Westfal D des Piesberges
In dieser Arbeit wird die Begleitflora zu den nicht-marinen Muschelfunden des Piesberges bei OsnabrĂŒck, worĂŒber in Band 24 dieser Mitteilungen berichtet wurde, nĂ€her untersucht und dargestellt. Die nicht-marinen Muscheln wurden z.T. direkt aus dem Hangenden des Flözes DreibĂ€nke, zum anderen und grössten Teil aus einer nahegelegenen Halde geborgen. Aufgrund des Vorkommens von Neuropteris dussartii Laveine, Sphenopteris coemansii Andrae und Alethopteris davreuxii (Brongniart) Goeppert kann festgestellt werden, dass das Haldenmaterial aus dem untersten Teil des Westfal D stammt.The fossil plant remains of the Piesberg near OsnabrĂŒck, which were found together with the non-marine shells (published in volume 24 of this journal), were studied and documented. Few of the non-marine shells were collected directly from above coal seam DreibĂ€nke. However, most of the shells were collected from a waste dump. Based on the occurrence of Neuropteris dussartii Laveine, Sphenopteris coemansii Andrae and Alethopteris davreuxii (Brongniart) Goeppert it is concluded that the material from the dump belongs to the lowermost Westphalian D
Interpretation of Recent SPS Dilepton Data
We summarize our current theoretical understanding of in-medium properties of
the electromagnetic current correlator in view of recent dimuon data from the
NA60 experiment in In(158 AGeV)-In collisions at the CERN-SPS. We discuss the
sensitivity of the results to space-time evolution models for the hot and dense
partonic and hadronic medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and
