    Hydrodynamic Description of Granular Convection

    We present a hydrodynamic model that captures the essence of granular dynamics in a vibrating bed. We carry out the linear stability analysis and uncover the instability mechanism that leads to the appearance of the convective rolls via a supercritical bifurcation of a bouncing solution.     Doping Dependent Changes in Nitrogen 2pp States in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ga1−x_{1-x}Crx_{x}N

    We study the electronic structure of the recently discovered diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga1−x_{1-x}Crx_{x}N (xx = 0.01-0.10). A systematic study of the changes in the occupiedoccupied and unoccupiedunoccupied ligand (N) partial density of states (DOS) of the host lattice is carried out using N 1ss soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray absorption measurements confirm the wurtzite N 2pp DOS and substitutional doping of Cr into Ga-sites. Coupled changes in the occupiedoccupied and unoccupiedunoccupied N 2pp character DOS of Ga1−x_{1-x}Crx_{x}N identify states responsible for ferromagnetism consistent with band structure calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Infrared Imaging of the Gravitational Lens PG 1115+080 with the Subaru Telescope

    We present high spatial resolution images of the gravitational-lens system PG 1115+080 taken with the near-infrared camera (CISCO) on the Subaru telescope. The FWHM of the combined image is 0.′′320.''32 in the K′K'-band, yielding spatial resolution of 0.′′140.''14 after a deconvolution procedure. This is a first detection of an extended emission adjacent to the A1/A2 components, indicating the presence of a fairly bright emission region with a characteristic angular radius of ∼\sim 5 mas (40 pc). The near-infrared image of the Einstein ring was extracted in both the JJ and K′K' bands. The J−K′J-K' color is found to be significantly redder than that of a synthetic model galaxy with an age of 3 Gyr, the age of the universe at the quasar redshift.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures.     Coefficient of restitution for elastic disks

    We calculate the coefficient of restitution, ϵ\epsilon, starting from a microscopic model of elastic disks. The theory is shown to agree with the approach of Hertz in the quasistatic limit, but predicts inelastic collisions for finite relative velocities of two approaching disks. The velocity dependence of ϵ\epsilon is calculated numerically for a wide range of velocities. The coefficient of restitution furthermore depends on the elastic constants of the material via Poisson's number. The elastic vibrations absorb kinetic energy more effectively for materials with low values of the shear modulus.Comment: 25 pages, 12 Postscript figures, LaTex2

    Anomalous Hall effect as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses

    Anomalous Hall effect arising from the noncoplanar spin configuration (chirality) is discussed as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses. It is shown that the Hall coefficient yields direct information about the linear and nonlinear chiral susceptibilities of the spin sector, which has been hard to obtain experimentally from the standard magnetic measurements. Based on the chirality scenario of spin-glass transition, predictions are given on the behavior of the Hall resistivity of canonical spin glasses.Comment: Order estimate of the effect given, one reference added.     Studies of the Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Structure of Nd2Mo2O7 -Test of the Chirality Mechanism-

    Neutron scattering studies have been carried out under the magnetic fields H//[0_11] and H//[001] on a single crystal of Nd2Mo2O7, whose Hall resistivity(rhoH) exhibits quite unusual H- and temperature(T)-dependences. Material parameters such as the single ion anisotropies of the Mo- and Nd- moments and exchange coupling constants among the Mo-Mo, Mo-Nd and Nd-Nd moments, have been determined to reproduce various kinds of experimental data taken as a function of H and T. For example, the neutron Bragg intensities, magnetization curves and the magnetic specific heats have been reproduced by the common parameters. By using the magnetic structure reproduced by these parameters, the spin chirality (chi) of Mo spins or the fictitious magnetic flux Phi proportional to chi has been calculated as a function of H and T by using equation chi=, where the bracket means the statistical average. (Note that we do not use the equation chi=x, because the local nature of the chirality should be correctly considered.) Comparing the calculated results with the observed rhoH, we can conclude that the unusual behavior of rH cannot be understood consistently only by the chirality mechanism.Comment: 16 pages, 12 fiures, submitted to J.     Chirality driven anomalous Hall effect in weak coupling regime

    Anomalous Hall effect arising from non-trivial spin configuration (chirality) is studied based on the ss-dd model. Considering a weak coupling case, the interaction is treated perturbatively. Scattering by normal impurities is included. Chirality is shown to drive locally Hall current and leads to overall Hall effect if there is a finite uniform chirality. This contribution is independent of the conventional spin-orbit contribution and shows distinct low temperature behavior. In mesoscopic spin glasses, chirality-induced anomalous Hall effect is expected below the spin-glass transition temperature. Measurement of Hall coefficient would be useful in experimentally confirming the chirality ordering

    Spin Dynamics and Orbital State in LaTiO_3

    A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3_{3} (TN=132_{{\rm N}}=132 K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant J=15.5J=15.5 meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (D=1.1D=1.1 meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations.
