Plutonium tetrafluoride has so far not b een investigated by NMR through such a study might y ield additional information on the electronic structure of the fluorides of the actinide elements. PuF, which is isostructural with UF,1, CeF4 , ThF4 , NpF,., HfF ,, and ZrF4 was prepared b y hydrofluorination of plu·tonium dioxide at 600 ° C. The hydrogen fluoride had b een previously treated with elemental fluorine and purified by subsequent distillations. The formation of plutonium trifluoride was prevented by a small addition of oxygen

Study of Tutton\u27s Salts (NH4)M(SO4)2 · 6H2O with Mixed Metal Ions in the Structure

Tutton\u27s salts, (NH4hM(S04h\u27 6H20, in which M represents one, two or three different metal ions in the structure have been obtained previously. Because of similar properties of the transition . elements we started to study the system (NH4hS04-H20-MS04 (M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn or mixtures of these elements) and we isolated the crystals (NH4hM(S04)2. 6H20 where M represents mixtures of Ni, Zn; Co, Ni, Zn; Co, Ni, Cu, Zn; Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn; Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn. The products were characterized by chemical analysis. X-ray powder photographs of the products confirmed that they have structures similar to those of other Tutton\u27s salts. The thermal decomposition of the salts was studied in air and in an argon atmosphere and the final products were identified by X-ray powder photographs

The Critical Temperature of Xenon Difluoride

    Get PDF
In an attempt to determine critical constants of xenon fluorides we have measured the critical temperature of XeF 2• The disappearance and reappearance of the meniscus was observed on heating and cooling xenon difluoride in sealed quartz tubes. The experimental set-up was calibrated against the critical temperature of toluene, which was determined in the same way

Gas Chromatography of Volatile Xenon Compounds. The Elution Behavior of Xenon Difluoride

    Get PDF
For the first time the gas chromatography of a volatile xenon compound is reported. In this paper the elution of XeF2 from a Kel F 10 oil-Fluoropak column is described and discussed in terms of instrumental requirements and chemical and physical properties of XeF2. Possibilities for further application of gas chromatography in the analysis of xenon compounds and in the determination of certain physicochemical parameters are pointed out

Preliminary NMR Data of Ammonium Heptafluorozirconate

Some time ago, Pauling and Hampson1 investigated the room temperature crystal structure of ammon, ium heptafluorozirconate and found that the substance contained the ion (ZrF7 ) 3- and not (ZrF,y - and F - ions as suggested earlier.2 However, they were not able to assign all the atoms to definite positions in the unit cell and had to assum e some disorder in the orientation of the ZrF7 complexes

    Magnetic Measurements on XeF4

A few weeks after the measurements reported in our previous communi ·cations1·2 were performed the sample of XeF4 showed signs of decomposition. It was therefore resublimed together with a new batch of X eF 4 • The results to be reported here were consistent within past few months and are regarde.as characteristic of pure XeF4
