Finite Element Methods for Nonlinear Static Analysis of Sandwich Plates

A finite element method, developed for static analysis of composite plates, was enhanced to be used with sandwich plates. The theory considers geometric nonlinearity and transverse shear. Furthermore, a new postprocessor was written to check for initial failure using the maximum stress criteria. It also includes a procedure for evaluating transverse normal stresses by enforcing equilibrium. The code modifications for sandwiches were verified by comparing finite element solutions to closed-form sandwich theories. Both methods showed good correlation. In addition, comparisons between one type of composite plate and a similar sandwich plate found that the sandwich had better specific stiffness for various geometries. Finally, quasi-static models of low-velocity impacts on sandwich plates succeeded in predicting incipient damage due to core crushing in the impact region, but they were inconsistent in estimating the actual load levels for initial failure, based on experiments from other research

A treatability study to support the development of a remediation system which would reduce the contaminant levels in groundwater removed from the aquifers in the vicinity of the F/H seepage basins and southwest of the Mixed Waste Management Facility (MWMF) at the Savannah River facility was conducted. Proposed changes in the remediation system require an additional study to determine whether precipitated sludge generated from the proposed remediation system will be hazardous as defined by RCRA. Several contaminants, such as lead and mercury, are above the groundwater protection standards. The presence of radionuclides and other contaminants in the sludge does not present a problem provided that the sludge can pass the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Information Literacy Needs Open Access or: Open Access is not Only for Researchers

The Open Access was initially (blandly) conceived in view not only of researchers but also of lay readers, then this perspective slowly faded out. The Information Literacy movement wants to teach citizens how to arrive at trustable information but the amount of paywalled knowledge is still big. So, their lines of development are somehow complementary: Information Literacy needs Open Access for the citizens to freely access high quality information while Open Access truly fulfils its scope when it is conceived and realized not only for the researchers (an aristocratic view which was the initial one) but for the whole society
