Production of mullite fibers
Disclosed here is a process for making mullite fibers wherein a hydrolizable silicon compound and an aluminum compound in the form of a difunctional aluminum chelate are hydrolized to form sols using water and an alcohol with a catalytic amount of hydrochloric acid. The sols are mixed in a molar ratio of aluminum to silicon of 3 to 1 and, under polycondensation conditions, a fibrous gel is formed. From this gel the mullite fibers can be produced
Observations of mesoscale vertical velocities around frontal zones
Vertical velocity and reflectivity data obtained with a VHF Doppler radar over a 15-day period in October and November of 1981 are analyzed. Standard radiosonde data and surface observations were used to locate two occluded fronts, two warm fronts, and a cold front that passed the radar site. These fronts are also evident in the radar reflectivity data. Most studies of the vertical circulation patterns associated with mososcale systems have used precipitation and cloud formations as tracers. Unlike other observational techniques, the VHF radar permits the continuous measurement of the three-dimensional air velocity vector in time and height from a fixed location. With the beam in a vertically pointing position, signals are scattered from turbulent variations in the refractive index with half the scale of the radar wavelength and by regions with sudden changes in the refractive index associated with horizontally stratified layers. Generally, the strongest echoes occur at the maximum in the vertical gradient of refractivity, usually at the base of a temperature inversion, such as the tropopause. VHF radars can also be used to locate atmospheric fronts, which are characterized by static stability, large horizontal temperature gradients, large vorticities, and vertical wind shears. These radars can provide the velocity field data needed to study wave motions associated with fronts and compare the actual vertical circulation to theoretical predictions
Comparison of vertical velocities analyzed by a numerical model and measured by a VHF wind profiler
The use of wind profilers for measuring vertical velocities in the troposphere and lower stratosphere is potentially of great interest for verification of forecasts, diagnosis of mesoscale circulations, and studies of wave motions. The studies of profiler vertical velocities to date have shown that the observed patterns of ascent and subsidence are reasonable when compared to the synoptic conditions. However, difficulties arise when a direct verification of the profiler vertical winds is sought. Since no other technique can measure the vertical velocities over the same height range and with the same claimed accuracy as the profilers, direct comparisons are impossible. The only alternative is to compare the measurements to analyzed vertical velocity fields. Here, researchers compare vertical measurements made with the SOUSY VHF radar over a period of 11 days at the beginning of November 1981 to the analyzed vertical velocities produced by the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) model for grid points near the radar site
Endohedral Impurities in Carbon Nanotubes
A generalization of the Anderson model that includes pseudo-Jahn-Teller
impurity coupling is proposed to describe distortions of an endohedral impurity
in a carbon nanotube. Treating the distortion within mean-field theory,
spontaneous axial symmetry breaking is found when the vibronic coupling
strength g exceeds a critical value g. The effective potential in the
symmetry-broken state is found to have O(2) symmetry, in agreement with
numerical calculations. For metallic zigzag nanotubes endohedrally-doped with
transition metals in the dilute limit, the low-energy properties of the system
may display two-channel Kondo behavior; however, strong vibronic coupling is
seen to exponentially suppress the Kondo energy scale.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Anharmonicity and self-energy effects of the E2g phonon in MgB2
We present a Raman scattering study of the E2g phonon anharmonicity and of
superconductivity induced self-energy effects in MgB2 single crystals. We show
that anharmonic two phonon decay is mainly responsible for the unusually large
linewidth of the E2g mode. We observe ~ 2.5 % hardening of the E2g phonon
frequency upon cooling into the superconducting state and estimate the
electron-phonon coupling strength associated with this renormalization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted to PR
Inequalities that test locality in quantum mechanics
Quantum theory violates Bell's inequality, but not to the maximum extent that
is logically possible. We derive inequalities (generalizations of Cirel'son's
inequality) that quantify the upper bound of the violation, both for the
standard formalism and the formalism of generalized observables (POVMs). These
inequalities are quantum analogues of Bell inequalities, and they can be used
to test the quantum version of locality. We discuss the nature of this kind of
locality. We also go into the relation of our results to an argument by Popescu
and Rohrlich (Found. Phys. 24, 379 (1994)) that there is no general connection
between the existence of Cirel'son's bound and locality.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; the argument has been made clearer in the revised

E-cigarette use among women of reproductive age: Impulsivity, cigarette smoking status, and other risk factors.
INTRODUCTION: The study aim was to examine impulsivity and other risk factors for e-cigarette use among women of reproductive age comparing current daily cigarette smokers to never cigarette smokers. Women of reproductive age are of special interest because of the additional risk that tobacco and nicotine use represents should they become pregnant.
METHOD: Survey data were collected anonymously online using Amazon Mechanical Turk in 2014. Participants were 800 women ages 24-44years from the US. Half (n=400) reported current, daily smoking and half (n=400) reported smokingsociodemographics, tobacco/nicotine use, and impulsivity (i.e., delay discounting & Barratt Impulsiveness Scale). Predictors of smoking and e-cigarette use were examined using logistic regression.
RESULTS: Daily cigarette smoking was associated with greater impulsivity, lower education, past illegal drug use, and White race/ethnicity. E-cigarette use in the overall sample was associated with being a cigarette smoker and greater education. E-cigarette use among current smokers was associated with increased nicotine dependence and quitting smoking; among never smokers it was associated with greater impulsivity and illegal drug use. E-cigarette use was associated with hookah use, and for never smokers only with use of cigars and other nicotine products.
CONCLUSIONS: E-cigarette use among women of reproductive age varies by smoking status, with use among current smokers reflecting attempts to quit smoking whereas among non-smokers use may be a marker of a more impulsive repertoire that includes greater use of alternative tobacco products and illegal drugs
