Multiparticle correlation studies in pPb collisions at ās_(NN) = 8.16 TeV
The second- and third-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics of charged particles produced in pPb collisions, at ās_(NN) = 8.16, are studied over a wide range of event multiplicities. Multiparticle correlations are used to isolate global properties stemming from the collision overlap geometry. The second-order āellipticā harmonic moment is obtained with high precision through four-, six-, and eight-particle correlations and, for the first time, the third-order ātriangularā harmonic moment is studied using four-particle correlations. A sample of peripheral PbPb collisions at ās_(NN)= 5.02 TeV that covers a similar range of event multiplicities as the pPb results is also analyzed. Model calculations of initial-state fluctuations in pPb and PbPb collisions can be directly compared to the high-precision experimental results. This work provides new insight into the fluctuation-driven origin of the v3 coefficients in pPb and PbPb collisions, and into the dominating overall collision geometry in PbPb collisions at the earliest stages of heavy ion interactions
Measurement of electroweak production of a W boson in association with two jets in protonāproton collisions at ās = 13 TeV
A measurement is presented of electroweak (EW) production of a W boson in association with two jets in protonāproton collisions at ās =13 TeV. The data sample was recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fbā»Ā¹. The measurement is performed for the āĪ½jj final state (with āĪ½ indicating a leptonāneutrino pair, and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in a kinematic region defined by invariant mass m_(jj) > 120GeV and transverse momenta p_(Tj) > 25 GeV. The cross section of the process is measured in the electron and muon channels yielding Ļ_(EW)(W_(jj)) = 6.23Ā±0.12(stat)Ā±0.61(syst)pb per channel, in agreement with leading-order standard model predictions. The additional hadronic activity of events in a signal-enriched region is studied, and the measurements are compared with predictions. The final state is also used to perform a search for anomalous trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95% confidence level intervals are ā2.3 < c_(WWW)/ĪĀ² < 2.5 TeVā»Ā², ā8.8 < c_W/ĪĀ² < 16 TeVā»Ā², and ā45 < c_B/ĪĀ² < 46 TeVā»Ā². These results are combined with the CMS EW Zjj analysis, yielding the constraint on the c_(WWW) coupling: ā1.8 < c_(WWW)/ĪĀ² < 2.0 TeVā»Ā²
Search for light pseudoscalar boson pairs produced from decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson in final states with two muons and two nearby tracks in pp collisions at ās = 13 TeV
A search is presented for pairs of light pseudoscalar bosons, in the mass range from 4 to 15 GeV, produced from decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. The decay modes considered are final states that arise when one of the pseudoscalars decays to a pair of tau leptons, and the other one either into a pair of tau leptons or muons. The search is based on proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fbā»Ā¹. The 2Ī¼2Ļ and 4Ļ channels are used in combination to constrain the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and the branching fraction into 4Ļ final state, ĻB, exploiting the linear dependence of the fermionic coupling strength of pseudoscalar bosons on the fermion mass. No significant excess is observed beyond the expectation from the standard model. The observed and expected upper limits at 95% confidence level on ĻB, relative to the standard model Higgs boson production cross section, are set respectively between 0.022 and 0.23 and between 0.027 and 0.19 in the mass range probed by the analysis
Measurement of the single top quark and antiquark production cross sections in the t channel and their ratio in proton-proton collisions at ās = 13 TeV
Measurements of the cross sections for the production of single top quarks and antiquarks in the t channel, and their ratio, are presented for proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set used was recorded in 2016 by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fbā»Ā¹. Events with one muon or electron are selected, and different categories of jet and b jet multiplicity and multivariate discriminators are applied to separate the signal from the background. The cross sections for the t-channel production of single top quarks and antiquarks are measured to be 130Ā±1(stat)Ā±19(syst)pb and 77Ā±1(stat)Ā±12(syst)pb, respectively, and their ratio is 1.68Ā±0.02(stat)Ā±0.05(syst). The results are in agreement with the predictions from the standard model
