The Prevalence of Workaholism: A Survey Study in a Nationally Representative Sample of Norwegian Employees
Workaholism has become an increasingly popular area for empirical study. However, most studies examining the prevalence of workaholism have used non-representative samples and measures with poorly defined cut-off scores. To overcome these methodological limitations, a nationally representative survey among employees in Norway (N = 1,124) was conducted. Questions relating to gender, age, marital status, caretaker responsibility for children, percentage of full-time equivalent, and educational level were asked. Workaholism was assessed by the use of a psychometrically validated instrument (i.e., Bergen Work Addiction Scale). Personality was assessed using the Mini-International Personality Item Pool. Results showed that the prevalence of workaholism was 8.3% (95% CI = 6.7–9.9%). An adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that workaholism was negatively related to age and positively related to the personality dimensions agreeableness, neuroticism, and intellect/imagination. Implications for these findings are discussed
Preliminary Results on Chemical Thinning of Apple Blossoms with Ammonium Thiosulphate, NAA, and Ethephon
Preliminary tests were carried out using ammonium thiosulphate as a chemical thinning agent for apple ('Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Braeburn') blossoms. Ethephon and NAA (1-napthylacetic acid) were included for comparison. Whole tree sprays of 37g/l ammonium thiosulphate over-thinned 'Cox's Orange Pippin' blossoms and severely scorched blossoms, foliage, and apical meristems. Ethephon at 0.35 g/l also over-thinned, and NAA thinned to an intermediate extent when compared with the controls. When the lower concentration of 3.7 g/l ammonium thiosulphate was directly applied to stamens and styles of 'Braeburn' blossoms by brush, initial fruit set was only 30% that of untreated blossoms. When 0.35 g/I ethephon was directly applied by brush to spur leaves or petals of 'Braeburn' blossoms at pink bud, initial fruit set was only 23% that of untreated blossoms. lt is concluded that ammonium thiosulphate has the potential to thin apple blossoms. Further experiments to define optimum concentrations and spray volumes are needed
The association between different sleep health dimensions and sex, age, education, circadian preference, and chronic insomnia: a representative population-based study
Objectives
The aims were to explore multidimensional sleep health and the different dimensions of sleep health in the adult Norwegian population in relation to sex, age, education, circadian preference, and chronic insomnia.
Methods
A representative sample of 1028 Norwegians, aged 18 + years completed a cross-sectional web-based survey. Sleep health was measured with the multidimensional RU_SATED scale, which assesses the dimensions of regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration. Insomnia was assessed with the Bergen Insomnia Scale. Data were analyzed with chi-square tests, t-tests, one-way ANOVAs, and regression analyses, as appropriate. Response rate was 33.5%.
Results
Sleep health was better in males, with increasing age, and with higher educational level, and was poorer in participants with evening preference and chronic insomnia, compared to their respective counterparts. When investigating the different sleep health dimensions, males scored better than females on satisfaction (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.51 to 0.93), timing (aOR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.49 to 0.88), and efficiency (aOR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.52 to 0.89). Older age was associated with better scores on regularity and satisfaction, whereas young age was associated with better scores on alertness and duration. High educational level was associated with better scores on alertness, timing, and duration. Evening types scored worse than morning types on regularity (aOR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.18 to 0.41), satisfaction (aOR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.26 to 0.53), and timing (aOR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.26 to 0.51). Participants with chronic insomnia scored worse than participants without insomnia on all six sleep health dimensions.
Conclusions
Sleep health differed significantly in relation to sex, age, education, circadian preference, and chronic insomnia. However, specific group differences were not equally evident in all sleep health dimensions.publishedVersio
Nucleation and spreading of a heterochromatic domain in fission yeast
Outstanding questions in the chromatin field bear on how large heterochromatin domains are formed in space and time. Positive feedback, where histone-modifying enzymes are attracted to chromosomal regions displaying the modification they catalyse, is believed to drive the formation of these domains; however, few quantitative studies are available to assess this hypothesis. Here we quantified the de novo establishment of a naturally occurring ∼20-kb heterochromatin domain in fission yeast through single-cell analyses, measuring the kinetics of heterochromatin nucleation in a region targeted by RNAi and its subsequent expansion. We found that nucleation of heterochromatin is stochastic and can take from one to ten cell generations. Further silencing of the full region takes another one to ten generations. Quantitative modelling of the observed kinetics emphasizes the importance of local feedback, where a nucleosome-bound enzyme modifies adjacent nucleosomes, combined with a feedback where recruited enzymes can act at a distance
The relationship between addictive use of social media and video games and symptoms of psychiatric disorders: a large-scale cross-sectional study
Over the last decade, research into ‘addictive technological behaviors’ has substantially increased. Research has also demonstrated strong associations between addictive use of technology and comorbid psychiatric disorders. In the present study, 23,533 adults (mean age 35.8 years, ranging from 16 to 88 years) participated in an online cross-sectional survey examining whether demographic variables, symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, and depression could explain variance in addictive use (i.e., compulsive and excessive use associated with negative outcomes) of two types of modern online technologies: social media and video games. Psychometrically robust instruments were utilized. Correlations between symptoms of addictive technology use and mental disorder symptoms were all positive and significant, including the interrelationship between the two addictive technological behaviors. Age appeared to be inversely related to the addictive use of these technologies. Being male was significantly associated with addictive use of video games, whereas being female was significantly associated with addictive use of social media. Being single was positively related to both addictive social networking and video gaming. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that demographic factors explained between 11% and 12% of the variance in addictive technology use. The mental health variables explained between 7% and 15% of the variance. The study significantly adds to our understanding of mental health symptoms and their role in addictive use of modern technology. Clinical implications, strengths, and limitations are discussed
Screening and assessment tools for gaming disorder: A comprehensive systematic review
The inclusion of gaming disorder (GD) as an official diagnosis in the ICD-11 was a significant milestone for the field. However, the optimal measurement approaches for GD are currently unclear. This comprehensive systematic review aimed to identify and evaluate all available English-language GD tools and their corresponding evidence. A search of PsychINFO, PsychArticles, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar identified 32 tools employed in 320 studies (N = 462,249 participants). The evaluation framework examined tools in relation to: (1) conceptual and practical considerations; (2) alignment with DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria; (3) type and quantity of studies and samples; and (4) psychometric properties. The evaluation showed that GD instrumentation has proliferated, with 2.5 tools, on average, published annually since 2013. Coverage of DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria was inconsistent, especially for the criterion of continued use despite harm. Tools converge on the importance of screening for impaired control over gaming and functional impairment. Overall, no single tool was found to be clearly superior, but the AICA-Sgaming, GAS-7, IGDT-10, IGDS9-SF, and Lemmens IGD-9 scales had greater evidential support for their psychometric properties. Blue-enriched white light improves performance but not subjective alertness and circadian adaptation during three consecutive simulated night shifts
Use of blue-enriched light has received increasing interest regarding its activating and performance sustaining effects. However, studies assessing effects of such light during night work are few, and novel strategies for lighting using light emitting diode (LED) technology need to be researched. In a counterbalanced crossover design, we investigated the effects of a standard polychromatic blue-enriched white light (7000 K; ∼200 lx) compared to a warm white light (2500 K), of similar photon density (∼1.6 × 1014 photons/cm2/s), during three consecutive simulated night shifts. A total of 30 healthy participants [10 males, mean age 23.3 (SD = 2.9) years] were included in the study. Dependent variables comprised subjective alertness using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) and a digit symbol substitution test (DSST), all administered at five time points throughout each night shift. We also assessed dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) before and after the night shifts, as well as participants’ opinion of the light conditions. Subjective alertness and performance on the PVT and DSST deteriorated during the night shifts, but 7000 K light was more beneficial for performance, mainly in terms of fewer errors on the PVT, at the end of the first- and second- night shift, compared to 2500 K light. Blue-enriched light only had a minor impact on PVT response times (RTs), as only the fastest 10% of the RTs were significantly improved in 7000 K compared to 2500 K light. In both 7000 and 2500 K light, the DLMO was delayed in those participants with valid assessment of this parameter [n = 20 (69.0%) in 7000 K light, n = 22 (78.6%) in 2500 K light], with a mean of 2:34 (SE = 0:14) and 2:12 (SE = 0:14) hours, respectively, which was not significantly different between the light conditions. Both light conditions were positively rated, although participants found 7000 K to be more suitable for work yet evaluated 2500 K light as more pleasant. The data indicate minor, but beneficial, effects of 7000 K light compared to 2500 K light on performance during night work. Circadian adaptation did not differ significantly between light conditions, though caution should be taken when interpreting these findings due to missing data. Field studies are needed to investigate similar light interventions in real-life settings, to develop recommendations regarding illumination for night workers.publishedVersio
The relationship between structural game characteristics and gambling behavior: a population-level study
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the structural characteristics and gambling behavior among video lottery terminal (VLT) gamblers. The study was ecological valid, because the data consisted of actual gambling behavior registered in the participants natural gambling environment without intrusion by researchers. Online behavioral tracking data from Multix, an eight game video lottery terminal, were supplied by Norsk-Tipping (the state owned gambling company in Norway). The sample comprised the entire population of Multix gamblers (N = 31,109) who had gambled in January 2010. The individual number of bets made across games was defined as the dependent variable, reward characteristics of a game (i.e., payback percentage, hit frequency, size of winnings and size of jackpot) and bet characteristics of a game (i.e., range of betting options and availability of advanced betting options) served as the independent variables. Control variables were age and gender. Two separate cross-classified multilevel random intercepts models were used to analyze the relationship between bets made, reward characteristics and bet characteristics, where the number of bets was nested within both individuals and within games. The results show that the number of bets is positively associated with payback percentage, hit frequency, being female and age, and negatively associated with size of wins and range of available betting options. In summary, the results show that the reward characteristics and betting options explained 27 % and 15 % of the variance in the number of bets made, respectively. It is concluded that structural game characteristics affect gambling behavior. Implications of responsible gambling are discussed
Coping styles relate to health and work environment of Norwegian and Dutch hospital nurses:A comparative study
Nurses exposed to high nursing stress report no health complaints as long as they have high coping abilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate coping styles in relation to the health status and work environment of Norwegian and Dutch hospital nurses. This comparative study included a random sample of 5400 Norwegian nurses and a convenience sample of 588 Dutch nurses. Coping, health, and work environment were assessed by questionnaire in both samples and associations were investigated bivariately and multi-variately. We found that active problem-solving coping was associated with the health and work environment of Norwegian nurses but not with the health and work environment of Dutch. Passive coping (avoiding problems or waiting to see what happens) was found to relate to poor general health, poor mental health, low job control, and low job support in both Norwegian and Dutch nurses. Improvements in the nursing work environment may not only result in better mental health, but may also reduce passive coping
