TV News Story Segmentation Based on Semantic Coherence and Content Similarity
In this paper, we introduce and evaluate two novel approaches, one using video stream and the other using close-caption text stream, for segmenting TV news into stories. The segmentation of the video stream into stories is achieved by detecting anchor person shots and the text stream is segmented into stories using a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) based approach. The benefit of the proposed LDA based approach is that along with the story segmentation it also provides the topic distribution associated with each segment. We evaluated our techniques on the TRECVid 2003 benchmark database and found that though the individual systems give comparable results, a combination of the outputs of the two systems gives a significant improvement over the performance of the individual systems
Peristaltic Transport of a Rheological Fluid: Model for Movement of Food Bolus Through Esophagus
Fluid mechanical peristaltic transport through esophagus has been of concern
in the paper. A mathematical model has been developed with an aim to study the
peristaltic transport of a rheological fluid for arbitrary wave shapes and tube
lengths. The Ostwald-de Waele power law of viscous fluid is considered here to
depict the non-Newtonian behaviour of the fluid. The model is formulated and
analyzed with the specific aim of exploring some important information
concerning the movement of food bolus through the esophagus. The analysis has
been carried out by using lubrication theory. The study is particularly
suitable for cases where the Reynolds number is small. The esophagus is treated
as a circular tube through which the transport of food bolus takes places by
periodic contraction of the esophageal wall. Variation of different variables
concerned with the transport phenomena such as pressure, flow velocity,
particle trajectory and reflux are investigated for a single wave as well as
for a train of periodic peristaltic waves. Locally variable pressure is seen to
be highly sensitive to the flow index `n'. The study clearly shows that
continuous fluid transport for Newtonian/rheological fluids by wave train
propagation is much more effective than widely spaced single wave propagation
in the case of peristaltic movement of food bolus in the esophagus.Comment: Accepted for publication in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (AMM),

"Big" Divisor D3/D7 Swiss Cheese Phenomenology
We review progress made over the past couple of years in the field of Swiss
Cheese Phenomenology involving a mobile space-time filling D3-brane and
stack(s) of fluxed D7-branes wrapping the "big" (as opposed to the "small")
divisor in (the orientifold of a) Swiss-Cheese Calabi-Yau. The topics reviewed
include reconciliation of large volume cosmology and phenomenology, evaluation
of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, one-loop RG-flow equations'
solutions for scalar masses, obtaining fermionic (possibly first two
generations' quarks/leptons) mass scales in the O(MeV-GeV)-regime as well as
(first two generations') neutrino masses (and their one-loop RG flow) of around
an eV. The heavy sparticles and the light fermions indicate the possibility of
"split SUSY" large volume scenario.Comment: Invited review for MPLA, 14 pages, LaTe
Masses and decay modes of charmonia using a confinement model
The masses of charmonium s and p-states, pseudoscalar and vector decay
constants, leptonic, hadronic as well as radiative decay widths for charmonia
have been computed in the framework of extended harmonic confinement model
without any additional parameters. The outcome in comparison with other
contemporary theoretical and experimental results is presented.Comment: Submitted to AIP for proceedings of International Workshop on

Anomaly of Film Porosity Dependence on Deposition Rate
This Letter reports an anomaly of film porosity dependence on deposition rate
during physical vapor deposition - the porosity increases as deposition rate
decreases. Using glancing angle deposition of Cu on SiO2 substrate, the authors
show that the Cu film consists of well separated nanorods when the deposition
rate is 1 nm/second, and that the Cu films consists of a more uniform (or lower
porosity) film when the deposition rate is 6 nm/second; all other deposition
conditions remain the same. This anomaly is the result of interplay among
substrate non-wetting, density of Cu nuclei on the substrate, and the minimum
diameter of nanorods
Gluon Condensates, Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Pion Wave Function
We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising
from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating
a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon
condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving
rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of
global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the
pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light
quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusion that low
energy hadron properties are primarily driven by the vacuum structure of
quantum chromodynamics.Comment: 25 pages, IP/BBSR/92-76, revte
Stream Sampling for Frequency Cap Statistics
Unaggregated data, in streamed or distributed form, is prevalent and come
from diverse application domains which include interactions of users with web
services and IP traffic. Data elements have {\em keys} (cookies, users,
queries) and elements with different keys interleave. Analytics on such data
typically utilizes statistics stated in terms of the frequencies of keys. The
two most common statistics are {\em distinct}, which is the number of active
keys in a specified segment, and {\em sum}, which is the sum of the frequencies
of keys in the segment. Both are special cases of {\em cap} statistics, defined
as the sum of frequencies {\em capped} by a parameter , which are popular in
online advertising platforms. Aggregation by key, however, is costly, requiring
state proportional to the number of distinct keys, and therefore we are
interested in estimating these statistics or more generally, sampling the data,
without aggregation. We present a sampling framework for unaggregated data that
uses a single pass (for streams) or two passes (for distributed data) and state
proportional to the desired sample size. Our design provides the first
effective solution for general frequency cap statistics. Our -capped
samples provide estimates with tight statistical guarantees for cap statistics
with and nonnegative unbiased estimates of {\em any} monotone
non-decreasing frequency statistics. An added benefit of our unified design is
facilitating {\em multi-objective samples}, which provide estimates with
statistical guarantees for a specified set of different statistics, using a
single, smaller sample.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, preliminary version will appear in KDD 201
Mean field and Monte Carlo studies of the magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model
Detailed mean field and Monte Carlo studies of the dynamic
magnetization-reversal transition in the Ising model in its ordered phase under
a competing external magnetic field of finite duration have been presented
here. Approximate analytical treatment of the mean field equations of motion
shows the existence of diverging length and time scales across this dynamic
transition phase boundary. These are also supported by numerical solutions of
the complete mean field equations of motion and the Monte Carlo study of the
system evolving under Glauber dynamics in both two and three dimensions.
Classical nucleation theory predicts different mechanisms of domain growth in
two regimes marked by the strength of the external field, and the nature of the
Monte Carlo phase boundary can be comprehended satisfactorily using the theory.
The order of the transition changes from a continuous to a discontinuous one as
one crosses over from coalescence regime (stronger field) to nucleation regime
(weaker field). Finite size scaling theory can be applied in the coalescence
regime, where the best fit estimates of the critical exponents are obtained for
two and three dimensions.Comment: 16 pages latex, 13 ps figures, typos corrected, references adde
