Enhanced conversion efficiency for harmonic generation with double resonance
Conversion efficiency for cw harmonic generation is calculated for the situation in which both fundamental and harmonic waves are resonant. Compared with the situation of a singly resonant cavity at the fundamental, the doubly resonant geometry can lead to an increase of the effective nonlinear coefficient. High conversion efficiency can thus be achieved with nonlinear crystals of relatively low nonlinear coefficient. and with modest pump power for the fundamental input
Reconfigurable photonic metamaterials drive by Coulomb, Lorentz and optical forces
Metamaterials offer a huge range of enhanced and novel functionalities that natural materials cannot provide. They promise applications in superresolution imaging, optical data storage, optical filters, polarization control, cloaking, fraud prevention and many more. However, their unique optical properties are often narrowband and usually fixed. Here we demonstrate how the mechanical rearrangement of metamaterial structures at the nanoscale provides a powerful platform for controlling metamaterial properties dynamically. Using thermal, electrical, magnetic and optical control signals we demonstrate large-range tuning, high-contrast switching and modulation of metamaterial optical properties at megahertz frequencies and beyond. Beyond the obvious benefit of adding tunability to known metamaterial functionalities, this unlocks many new opportunities in areas such as light modulation and highly nonlinear & bistable optical device
Spin correlated interferometry for polarized and unpolarized photons on a beam splitter
Spin interferometry of the 4th order for independent polarized as well as
unpolarized photons arriving simultaneously at a beam splitter and exhibiting
spin correlation while leaving it, is formulated and discussed in the quantum
approach. Beam splitter is recognized as a source of genuine singlet photon
states. Also, typical nonclassical beating between photons taking part in the
interference of the 4th order is given a polarization dependent explanation.Comment: RevTeX, 19 pages, 1 ps figure, author web page at

Nano-electromechanical switchable photonic metamaterials
We introduce mechanically reconfigurable electrostatically-driven photonic metamaterials (RPMs) as a generic platform for large-range tuning and switching of photonic metamaterial properties. Here we illustrate this concept with a high-contrast metamaterial electro-optic switch exhibiting relative reflection changes of up to 72% in the optical part of the spectrum
Controlling light with light in a plasmonic nanooptomechanical metamaterial
We demonstrate metamaterial with a cubic optical nonlinearity that is ten orders of magnitude greater than the reference nonlinearity of CS2. The nonlinearity has optomechanical nature and is underpinned by light-induced electromagnetic near-field interactions

The original versions (1 and 2) of this paper paper contain a fatal error.

Detection of sequential polyubiquitylation on a millisecond timescale
The pathway by which ubiquitin chains are generated on substrate through a cascade of enzymes consisting of an E1, E2 and E3 remains unclear. Multiple distinct models involving chain assembly on E2 or substrate have been proposed. However, the speed and complexity of the reaction have precluded direct experimental tests to distinguish between potential pathways. Here we introduce new theoretical and experimental methodologies to address both limitations. A quantitative framework based on product distribution predicts that the really interesting new gene (RING) E3 enzymes SCF^(Cdc4) and SCF^(Ī²-TrCP) work with the E2 Cdc34 to build polyubiquitin chains on substrates by sequential transfers of single ubiquitins. Measurements with millisecond time resolution directly demonstrate that substrate polyubiquitylation proceeds sequentially. Our results present an unprecedented glimpse into the mechanism of RING ubiquitin ligases and illuminate the quantitative parameters that underlie the rate and pattern of ubiquitin chain assembly
