Reasons for non participation in the Valuing Active Life in Dementia (VALID) randomised controlled trial of a dyadic occupational therapy intervention: an interview study
Objectives
There is currently little known about why people decline to participate in dyadic, psychosocial dementia research. This interview study aims to explore the reasons why people declined to participate in the Valuing Active Life in Dementia (VALID) research trial.
Methods
Ten family carers of people with dementia, who were part of a dyad that had declined to take part in the randomised controlled trial, participated in qualitative telephone interviews to explore their reasons for declining. Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify themes.
Findings
Two themes with related sub-themes were identified. 1) Protectiveness; protecting the person with dementia, themselves as carers, and their current lifestyle. 2) ‘It’s not for us’; the time commitment, and the possible unsuitability of the intervention, was seen to outweigh the perceived benefit of taking part. People with dementia were not always involved in the decision making process, with carers stating the decision not to participate was made in the usual way as all their decisions. No apparent differences between the spousal and child carers were apparent in the small sample.
Conclusions
Recruitment to randomised controlled trials can be considered difficult or unfair because some participants will miss out on the desired intervention. However, this study shows that concern about the time and inconvenience of being involved in the trial can put people off research participation. Identifying possible reasons for declining research participation contributes to the design of future trials and recruitment strategies, so that the potential benefit is considered relative to the time and effort involved. Offering research opportunities to people with dementia and their families at the right stage of the dementia trajectory for their needs, facilitating personalised recruitment strategies with finely tailored researcher communication skills should help maximise recruitment, reduce attrition and deliver a more successful trial

Smoothed Dissipative Particle Dynamics model for mesoscopic multiphase flows in the presence of thermal fluctuations
Thermal fluctuations cause perturbations of fluid-fluid interfaces and highly
nonlinear hydrodynamics in multiphase flows. In this work, we develop a novel
multiphase smoothed dissipative particle dynamics model. This model accounts
for both bulk hydrodynamics and interfacial fluctuations. Interfacial surface
tension is modeled by imposing a pairwise force between SDPD particles. We show
that the relationship between the model parameters and surface tension,
previously derived under the assumption of zero thermal fluctuation, is
accurate for fluid systems at low temperature but overestimates the surface
tension for intermediate and large thermal fluctuations. To analyze the effect
of thermal fluctuations on surface tension, we construct a coarse-grained Euler
lattice model based on the mean field theory and derive a semi-analytical
formula to directly relate the surface tension to model parameters for a wide
range of temperatures and model resolutions. We demonstrate that the present
method correctly models the dynamic processes, such as bubble coalescence and
capillary spectra across the interface
The compact far infrared emission from the young stellar object IRAS 16293-2422
High resolution far IR observations at 50 and 100 microns were made of the young stellar object (YSO), IRAS 16293-2422. The observations are part of a systematic high resolution study of nearby YSO's. The purpose is to obtain resolution in the far IR comparable to that at other wavelengths. Until recently, the high resolution that has been available in the far IR has been from either IRAS (angular resolution of approx 4 min) or the KAO using standard FIR photometry (approx 35 sec). With scanning techniques, it is possible to obtain 10 sec resolution on bright sources. Such a resolution is necessary to better determine the physical conditions of the YSO, and to compare with model of star formation. In order to better constrain the models for the source, the YSO was observed at both 50 and 100 microns on several flights in 1988 April from the KAO. Estimates are presented of the size both along the major and minor axis of the disk, as well as estimates of the dust temperature and 100 micron opacity for the YSO
The impact of shocks on the chemistry of molecular clouds: high resolution images of chemical differentiation along the NGC1333-IRAS2A outflow
This paper presents a detailed study of the chemistry in the outflow
associated with the low-mass protostar NGC1333-IRAS2A down to 3" (650 AU)
scales. Millimeter-wavelength aperture-synthesis observations from the OVRO and
BIMA interferometers and (sub)millimeter single-dish observations from the
Onsala 20m telescope and CSO are presented. The interaction of the highly
collimated protostellar outflow with a molecular condensation ~15000 AU from
the central protostar is clearly traced by molecular species such as HCN, SiO,
SO, CS, and CH3OH. Especially SiO traces a narrow high velocity component at
the interface between the outflow and the molecular condensation.
Multi-transition single-dish observations are used to distinguish the chemistry
of the shock from that of the molecular condensation and to address the
physical conditions therein. Statistical equilibrium calculations reveal
temperatures of 20 and 70 K for the quiescent and shocked components,
respectively, and densities near 10^6 cm^{-3}. Significant abundance
enhancements of two to four orders of magnitude are found in the shocked region
for molecules such as CH3OH, SiO and the sulfur-bearing molecules. HCO+ is seen
only in the aftermath of the shock consistent with models where it is destroyed
through release of H2O from grain mantles in the shock. N2H+ shows narrow
lines, not affected by the outflow but rather probing the ambient cloud.
Differences in abundances of HCN, H2CO and CS are seen between different
outflow regions and are suggested to be related to differences in the atomic
carbon abundance. Compared to the warm inner parts of protostellar envelopes,
higher abundances of in particular CH3OH and SiO are found in the outflows,

CARMA Large Area Star Formation Survey: Observational Analysis of Filaments in the Serpens South Molecular Cloud
We present the N2H+(J=1-0) map of the Serpens South molecular cloud obtained
as part of the CARMA Large Area Star Formation Survey (CLASSy). The
observations cover 250 square arcminutes and fully sample structures from 3000
AU to 3 pc with a velocity resolution of 0.16 km/s, and they can be used to
constrain the origin and evolution of molecular cloud filaments. The spatial
distribution of the N2H+ emission is characterized by long filaments that
resemble those observed in the dust continuum emission by Herschel. However,
the gas filaments are typically narrower such that, in some cases, two or three
quasi-parallel N2H+ filaments comprise a single observed dust continuum
filament. The difference between the dust and gas filament widths casts doubt
on Herschel ability to resolve the Serpens South filaments. Some molecular
filaments show velocity gradients along their major axis, and two are
characterized by a steep velocity gradient in the direction perpendicular to
the filament axis. The observed velocity gradient along one of these filaments
was previously postulated as evidence for mass infall toward the central
cluster, but these kind of gradients can be interpreted as projection of

Genetic analysis of hybridization and introgression between wild mongoose and brown lemurs.
BACKGROUND: Hybrid zones generally represent areas of secondary contact after speciation. The nature of the interaction between genes of individuals in a hybrid zone is of interest in the study of evolutionary processes. In this study, data from nuclear microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA sequences were used to genetically characterize hybridization between wild mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz) and brown lemurs (E. fulvus) at Anjamena in west Madagascar. RESULTS: Two segments of mtDNA have been sequenced and 12 microsatellite loci screened in 162 brown lemurs and mongoose lemurs. Among the mongoose lemur population at Anjamena, we identified two F1 hybrids (one also having the mtDNA haplotype of E. fulvus) and six other individuals with putative introgressed alleles in their genotype. Principal component analysis groups both hybrids as intermediate between E. mongoz and E. fulvus and admixture analyses revealed an admixed genotype for both animals. Paternity testing proved one F1 hybrid to be fertile. Of the eight brown lemurs genotyped, all have either putative introgressed microsatellite alleles and/or the mtDNA haplotype of E. mongoz. CONCLUSION: Introgression is bidirectional for the two species, with an indication that it is more frequent in brown lemurs than in mongoose lemurs. We conclude that this hybridization occurs because mongoose lemurs have expanded their range relatively recently. Vienna Circle and Logical Analysis of Relativity Theory
In this paper we present some of our school's results in the area of building
up relativity theory (RT) as a hierarchy of theories in the sense of logic. We
use plain first-order logic (FOL) as in the foundation of mathematics (FOM) and
we build on experience gained in FOM.
The main aims of our school are the following: We want to base the theory on
simple, unambiguous axioms with clear meanings. It should be absolutely
understandable for any reader what the axioms say and the reader can decide
about each axiom whether he likes it. The theory should be built up from these
axioms in a straightforward, logical manner. We want to provide an analysis of
the logical structure of the theory. We investigate which axioms are needed for
which predictions of RT. We want to make RT more transparent logically, easier
to understand, easier to change, modular, and easier to teach. We want to
obtain deeper understanding of RT.
Our work can be considered as a case-study showing that the Vienna Circle's
(VC) approach to doing science is workable and fruitful when performed with
using the insights and tools of mathematical logic acquired since its formation
years at the very time of the VC activity. We think that logical positivism was
based on the insight and anticipation of what mathematical logic is capable
when elaborated to some depth. Logical positivism, in great part represented by
VC, influenced and took part in the birth of modern mathematical logic. The

Inferring metabolic mechanisms of interaction within a defined gut microbiota
The diversity and number of species present within microbial communities create the potential for a multitude of interspecies metabolic interactions. Here, we develop, apply, and experimentally test a framework for inferring metabolic mechanisms associated with interspecies interactions. We perform pairwise growth and metabolome profiling of co-cultures of strains from a model mouse microbiota. We then apply our framework to dissect emergent metabolic behaviors that occur in co-culture. Based on one of the inferences from this framework, we identify and interrogate an amino acid cross-feeding interaction and validate that the proposed interaction leads to a growth benefit in vitro. Our results reveal the type and extent of emergent metabolic behavior in microbial communities composed of gut microbes. We focus on growth-modulating interactions, but the framework can be applied to interspecies interactions that modulate any phenotype of interest within microbial communities
