On the removal of s-triazine herbicides from waters using commercial low-cost granular carbons

The adsorption capacities of three low-cost granular active carbons, used in a water treatment facility for the removal of the triazine herbicides propazine, prometryn and prometon, was evaluated. Kinetic studies showed that the three carbon samples used could be suitable in practice for the treatment of moderate contents of the herbicides in contaminated waters. The apparent adsorption rate constants were calculated. Equilibrium studies showed that the data fit the Frumkin isotherm. The results show that in the adsorption process there are repulsive lateral interactions that depend mainly on the adsorbate molecules rather than the nature or distribution of the adsorption sites. Such lateral interactions seem to be established mainly between the isopropyl groups of adjacent molecules, being of the same order for the three molecules

The Andalusian Tourism Sector during the Economic Crisis and its Impact on Regional Development

It is not common practice to assess tourism’s effects on regional development, although its benefits for host economies are widely known. This paper attempts to discern such activity’s role in a geographic setting by applying structural analysis techniques based on social accounting matrices (SAMs). This methodological approach is applied to the case of Andalusia during the period 2010-2014, encompassing both the financial crisis period and the apparent resurgence. The research aims to reflect on the andalusian economy from the perspective of tourism and know its impacts on the regional territory. The proposed methodology is applied to a region where tourism became more prominent during the financial crisis. The results indicate that tourism’s significance in the host economy is due its own particular behaviour and also to the performance of other economic sectors during the study period. Tourism has shown considerable carry-over capacity in the territory, although challenges have arisen in employment, demand and technological density aspects. All of them should be addressed so that tourism can provide a sustainable support for regional development. Tourism sector’s appeared as a strategic sector, partly due to its specific performance, though also to the other sectors’ performance, either declining industries such as construction or with lighter presence, as in the case of industrial activities. Tourism has also shown itself to be a pro-cyclical sector, with landmarks. Yet the tourism sector has shown proven resilience and a considerable ability to foster economic development in the territory.</p

Designing Public Policies: An Approach based on Multi-Criteria Analysis and Computable General Equilibrium Modeling

This book presents a methodological approach for the joint design of economic and environmental policies. The starting point is the observation that, in practice, policy makers do not usually have a well-defined objective, but they are typically concerned about a number of economic and environmental indicators that conflict with each other. In view of this, policy making is addressed by combining two separate analytical approaches: multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) and computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling. The aim is to come up with a methodological framework for policy design which is both operational and consistent with economic theory. In short, this book offers a unified view of this novel approach, paying special attention to the connections between economic and environmental objectives. The methodological foundations are presented as well as some real applications that illustrate the pragmatic value of the theoretical proposal. Provider_Name: Fundacion BBVA / BBVA Foundation
