Neutrino oscillations: measuring including its sign
In neutrino phenomenology, terms in the oscillation probabilities linear in
lead naturally to the question ``How can one measure

Mixing aggression intensity is associated with age at first service and floor type during gestation, with implications for sow reproductive performance
peer-reviewedAggression resulting from mixing to establish a dominance hierarchy is a major welfare concern for group-housed sows. The associated stress can negatively impact aspects of reproductive performance. Objectives of this study were to investigate associations between 1) age at first service (AFS) and mixing aggression intensity in first parity sows, 2) mixing aggression intensity and reproductive performance within and between parity one and parity two, and 3) mixing aggression intensity, floor type during gestation and reproductive performance. Gilts (nâŻ=160, hereafter referred to as sows) were mixed into stable groups of eight unfamiliar individuals approximately 4 days after artificial insemination, housed on fully slatted concrete (CON; nâŻ=80) floor uncovered or covered with rubber slat mats (RUB; nâŻ=80), and followed through two parities. Skin lesions (SLMIX; a proxy for the intensity of mixing aggression), were scored post mixing in each parity according to severity (0=no lesions to 5=severe lesions) on five body regions (ear, neck, hindquarter, rump, and belly) on the left and right sides, and at the tail/anogenital region. Total SLMIX score was calculated for each sow. Data on reproductive performance traits were acquired retrospectively from farm records for both parities. Two analyses were performed: 1) data from each parity were analysed separately and 2) SLMIX score in parity one was used to predict reproductive performance in parity two. Lower AFS was associated with a lower SLMIX score in parity one (PâŻ=0.031). There was no association between SLMIX score and reproductive performance in parity one, while sows with higher SLMIX score in parity two had a higher proportion of piglets dead during lactation (PâŻ=0.027) and a longer cycle length (PâŻ=0.003) in parity two. Sows with higher SLMIX scores in parity one had more non-productive days (PâŻ<0.001) in parity two. Concrete sows had a higher SLMIX score than RUB sows in parity one (PâŻ=0.015), but not in parity two. In addition, CON sows had a higher proportion of piglets born dead (PâŻ=0.013) compared with RUB sows in parity two. Mixing aggression has a negative influence on reproductive performance within parities, and it may also have a long-term negative carry-over effect on reproductive performance in subsequent parities. Serving gilts at younger ages could help to minimize the intensity of aggression at mixing, while housing on rubber flooring has beneficial implications for their reproductive performance
Chromosome specific c-DNA libraries: reduction of unspecific priming events by purification of heteronuclear RNA
Chromosome specific c-DNA libraries greatly facilitate the isolation of disease associated genes which have been previously linked to particular chromosomes. Recently, several methods have been developed and employed for the isolation of transcribed sequences from specific human chromosomes and chromosome regions. Heteronuclear (hn) RNA from somatic human/rodent cell hybrids has been used as starting material to selectively prime the synthesis of human specific c-DNAs. A drawback of this method is the high number of rodent clones found in these chromosome specific c-DNA libraries. Here, we provide direct evidence that unspecific priming events account for the majority of these rodent clones. Using an Alu consensus primer hn-RNA human specific c-DNA libraries have been established and the specificity of Alu-priming has been evaluated. Using a variety of purification schemes for isolating hn-RNA we have significantly reduced the percentage of unspecific priming events. Recyclizations of 2-aminobenzylimines and thioaroylhydrazones of N-substituted N-hydroxy-3-oxobutanamides
A universal scheme is proposed for the molecular design of heterocyclic recyclizations by replacing the exocyclic hydroxyl groups in exo-trig- ring-chain tautomeric molecules with substituted amines or hydrazines. The practical applicability of this approach is demonstrated by the condensations of 5-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-isoxazolidinones with thioaroyl-hydrazines and 2-aminomethylaniline. The condensation products were studied by modern 1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectroscopic methods using three solvents: CDCl3, DMSO[D6] and CD3CN. The solvent was found to have a strong effect to the relative amounts of the tautomers
Scintillator counters with WLS fiber/MPPC readout for the side muon range detector (SMRD)of the T2K experiment
The T2K neutrino experiment at J-PARC uses a set of near detectors to measure
the properties of an unoscillated neutrino beam and neutrino interaction
cross-sections. One of the sub-detectors of the near-detector complex, the side
muon range detector (SMRD), is described in the paper. The detector is designed
to help measure the neutrino energy spectrum, to identify background and to
calibrate the other detectors. The active elements of the SMRD consist of 0.7
cm thick extruded scintillator slabs inserted into air gaps of the UA1 magnet
yokes. The readout of each scintillator slab is provided through a single WLS
fiber embedded into a serpentine shaped groove. Two Hamamatsu multi-pixel
avalanche photodiodes (MPPC's) are coupled to both ends of the WLS fiber. This
design allows us to achieve a high MIP detection efficiency of greater than
99%. A light yield of 25-50 p.e./MIP, a time resolution of about 1 ns and a
spatial resolution along the slab better than 10 cm were obtained for the SMRD

The ArDM experiment
The aim of the ArDM project is the development and operation of a one ton
double-phase liquid argon detector for direct Dark Matter searches. The
detector measures both the scintillation light and the ionization charge from
ionizing radiation using two independent readout systems. This paper briefly
describes the detector concept and presents preliminary results from the ArDM
R&D program, including a 3 l prototype developed to test the charge readout

Precise 3D track reconstruction algorithm for the ICARUS T600 liquid argon time projection chamber detector
Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detectors offer charged
particle imaging capability with remarkable spatial resolution. Precise event
reconstruction procedures are critical in order to fully exploit the potential
of this technology. In this paper we present a new, general approach of
three-dimensional reconstruction for the LAr TPC with a practical application
to track reconstruction. The efficiency of the method is evaluated on a sample
of simulated tracks. We present also the application of the method to the
analysis of real data tracks collected during the ICARUS T600 detector

Search for anomalies in the {\nu}e appearance from a {\nu}{\mu} beam
We report an updated result from the ICARUS experiment on the search for
{\nu}{\mu} ->{\nu}e anomalies with the CNGS beam, produced at CERN with an
average energy of 20 GeV and travelling 730 km to the Gran Sasso Laboratory.
The present analysis is based on a total sample of 1995 events of CNGS neutrino
interactions, which corresponds to an almost doubled sample with respect to the
previously published result. Four clear {\nu}e events have been visually
identified over the full sample, compared with an expectation of 6.4 +- 0.9
events from conventional sources. The result is compatible with the absence of
additional anomalous contributions. At 90% and 99% confidence levels the limits
to possible oscillated events are 3.7 and 8.3 respectively. The corresponding
limit to oscillation probability becomes consequently 3.4 x 10-3 and 7.6 x 10-3
respectively. The present result confirms, with an improved sensitivity, the
early result already published by the ICARUS collaboration
