Lateral Casimir force beyond the Proximity Force Approximation
We argue that the appropriate variable to study a non trivial geometry
dependence of the Casimir force is the lateral component of the Casimir force,
which we evaluate between two corrugated metallic plates outside the validity
of the Proximity Force Approximation (PFA). The metallic plates are described
by the plasma model, with arbitrary values for the plasma wavelength, the plate
separation and the corrugation period, the corrugation amplitude remaining the
smallest length scale. Our analysis shows that in realistic experimental
situations the Proximity Force Approximation overestimates the force by up to
30%.Comment: 4 pages. Identical to v1, which was accidentally replaced by a

Examining Expectations: Inspecting the Experiences of Student Teaching Interns in a Yearlong Paired-Placement at an Urban School
This paper examines the experiences of student teaching interns in paired-placements in an urban school setting, specifically how the pairs experience collaboration between themselves, mentor teachers, and university field instructors. In addition, the paper will examine how the paired teaching interns are able to perceive instruction that the students received. Using data from two participant surveys collected from student-teaching interns in paired-placements, results were compared with studies from academic literature and my own experience as a paired teaching intern. A thematic analysis was carried out with the data, in which was found evidence that the teaching interns enjoyed the extra support a partner provided and that students in the classroom appeared to have benefited from the additional resource. The data provided additional evidence that there was a lack of clarity between interns, mentor teachers, and university field instructors. The paper will propose strategies that will work to avoid these issues in future implementations
Radiative heat transfer between two dielectric nanogratings in the scattering approach
We present a theoretical study of radiative heat transfer between dielectric
nanogratings in the scattering approach. As a comparision with these exact
results, we also evaluate the domain of validity of Derjaguin's Proximity
Approximation (PA). We consider a system of two corrugated silica plates with
various grating geometries, separation distances, and lateral displacement of
the plates with respect to one another. Numerical computations show that while
the PA is a good approximation for aligned gratings, it cannot be used when the
gratings are laterally displaced. We illustrate this by a thermal modulator
device for nanosystems based on such a displacement
Thermal Casimir force between nanostructured surfaces
We present detailed calculations for the Casimir force between a plane and a
nanostructured surface at finite temperature in the framework of the scattering
theory. We then study numerically the effect of finite temperature as a
function of the grating parameters and the separation distance. We also infer
non-trivial geometrical effects on the Casimir interaction via a comparison
with the proximity force approximation. Finally, we compare our calculations
with data from experiments performed with nanostructured surfaces
Band structure analysis of the conduction-band mass anisotropy in 6H and 4H SiC
The band structures of 6H and 4H SiC calculated by means of the FP-LMTO
method are used to determine the effective mass tensors for their
conduction-band minima. The results are shown to be consistent with recent
optically detected cyclotron resonance measurements and predict an unusual band
filling dependence for 6H-SiC.Comment: 5 pages including 4 postscript figures incorporated with epsfig figs.

Defining user perception of distributed multimedia quality
This article presents the results of a study that explored the human side of the multimedia experience. We propose a model that assesses quality variation from three distinct levels: the network, the media and the content levels; and from two views: the technical and the user perspective. By facilitating parameter variation at each of the quality levels and from each of the perspectives, we were able to examine their impact on user quality perception. Results show that a significant reduction in frame rate does not proportionally reduce the user's understanding of the presentation independent of technical parameters, that multimedia content type significantly impacts user information assimilation, user level of enjoyment, and user perception of quality, and that the device display type impacts user information assimilation and user perception of quality. Finally, to ensure the transfer of information, low-level abstraction (network-level) parameters, such as delay and jitter, should be adapted; to maintain the user's level of enjoyment, high-level abstraction quality parameters (content-level), such as the appropriate use of display screens, should be adapted
Vacuum induced torque between corrugated metallic plates
We study the torque arising between two corrugated metallic plates due to the
interaction with electromagnetic vacuum. This Casimir torque can be measured
with torsion pendulum techniques for separation distances as large as 1m.
It allows one to probe the nontrivial geometry dependence of the Casimir energy
in a configuration which can be evaluated theoretically with accuracy. In the
optimal experimental configuration, the commonly used proximity force
approximation turns out to overestimate the torque by a factor 2 or larger.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Europhysics Letters. Technical
