    Journal ArticleReactions of several electronic states of Mn+ with H2, HD, and D2 have been examined using guided ion beam mass spectroscopy. The excitation function for the ground state of Mn+ ( 75) has two regions: one of very low reactivity at threshold and another more efficient pathway at higher energies. In contrast, the 5S and 5D states react efficiently at their thermodynamic thresholds. In reaction with HD, the 5S and 5D states produce s 3 times as much MnH+ as MnD+ in the threshold region

    Journal ArticleThe reactions of atomic chromium ions with H2 , HD, and D2 are examined using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. The ground electronic state (6S) is found to react inefficiently. The thresholds of these data are analyzed to yield a 0 K bond dissociation energy for CrH+ of 1.37 ± 0.09 eV (31.6 ± 2.0 kcal/mol). In the reaction of Cr+ (6S) with HD, formation of the metal deuteride ion is strongly favored over that of the metal hydride ion in the threshold region but not at higher energies. These results indicate that Cr+ (6S) reacts largely via an impulsive mechanism. No evidence for reaction of Cr+ (6Z>), the first excited state, is found but higher lying excited states, 4D and 4G (produced by electron impact), are found to react at their thermodynamic threshold. In reaction with HD, these states produce CrH+ preferentially by a factor of 2-4 over CrD+ . The differences in reactivity among these states can be explained by using simple molecular orbital concepts which have been developed for other atomic transition metal ions

    False-Name Manipulation in Weighted Voting Games is Hard for Probabilistic Polynomial Time

    False-name manipulation refers to the question of whether a player in a weighted voting game can increase her power by splitting into several players and distributing her weight among these false identities. Analogously to this splitting problem, the beneficial merging problem asks whether a coalition of players can increase their power in a weighted voting game by merging their weights. Aziz et al. [ABEP11] analyze the problem of whether merging or splitting players in weighted voting games is beneficial in terms of the Shapley-Shubik and the normalized Banzhaf index, and so do Rey and Rothe [RR10] for the probabilistic Banzhaf index. All these results provide merely NP-hardness lower bounds for these problems, leaving the question about their exact complexity open. For the Shapley--Shubik and the probabilistic Banzhaf index, we raise these lower bounds to hardness for PP, "probabilistic polynomial time", and provide matching upper bounds for beneficial merging and, whenever the number of false identities is fixed, also for beneficial splitting, thus resolving previous conjectures in the affirmative. It follows from our results that beneficial merging and splitting for these two power indices cannot be solved in NP, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses, which is considered highly unlikely

    Magic Numbers of Silicon Clusters

    A structural model for intermediate sized silicon clusters is proposed that is able to generate unique structures without any dangling bonds. This structural model consists of bulk-like core of five atoms surrounded by fullerene-like surface. Reconstruction of the ideal fullerene geometry results in the formation of crown atoms surrounded by π\pi-bonded dimer pairs. This model yields unique structures for \Si{33}, \Si{39}, and \Si{45} clusters without any dangling bonds and hence explains why these clusters are least reactive towards chemisorption of ammonia, methanol, ethylene, and water. This model is also consistent with the experimental finding that silicon clusters undergo a transition from prolate to spherical shapes at \Si{27}.     Stigma narratives: LGBT transitions and identities in Malta

Copyright @ 2011 A B Academic Publishers.This article considers narratives of transition experiences of a group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) young people in Malta. The article draws on Goffman's concept of stigma and uses this to explore transitions in a society that retains some traditional characteristics, particularly the code of honour and shame, although mediated by aspects of modernity. Interviews were undertaken with 15 young people with the goal of producing narratives. The article analyses the experience of stigma, its effects and how young people manage its consequences. It concludes by drawing attention to the pervasive nature of stigma and the importance of structure, agency and reflexivity in youth transitions. In particular stigma remains an important feature of societies in which hetero-normative sexuality remains dominant

    Has education lost sight of children?

    The reflections presented in this chapter are informed by clinical and personal experiences of school education in the UK. There are many challenges for children and young people in the modern education system and for the professionals who support them. In the UK, there are significant gaps between the highly selective education provided to those who pay privately for it and to the majority of those educated in the state-funded system. Though literacy rates have improved around the world, many children, particularly boys, do not finish their education for reasons such as boredom, behavioural difficulties or because education does not ‘pay’. Violence, bullying, and sexual harassment are issues faced by many children in schools and there are disturbing trends of excluding children who present with behavioural problems at school whose origins are not explored. Excluded children are then educated with other children who may also have multiple problems which often just make the situation worse. The experience of clinicians suggests that school-related mental health problems are increasing in severity. Are mental health services dealing with the consequences of an education system that is not meeting children’s needs? An education system that is testing- and performance-based may not be serving many children well if it is driving important decisions about them at increasingly younger ages. Labelling of children and setting them on educational career paths can occur well before they reach secondary schools, limiting potential very early on in their developmental trajectory. Furthermore, the emphasis at school on testing may come at the expense of creativity and other forms of intelligence, which are also valuable and important. Meanwhile the employment marketplace requires people with widely different skills, with an emphasis on innovation, creativity, and problem solving.     Surface reconstruction induced geometries of Si clusters

    We discuss a generalization of the surface reconstruction arguments for the structure of intermediate size Si clusters, which leads to model geometries for the sizes 33, 39 (two isomers), 45 (two isomers), 49 (two isomers), 57 and 61 (two isomers). The common feature in all these models is a structure that closely resembles the most stable reconstruction of Si surfaces, surrounding a core of bulk-like tetrahedrally bonded atoms. We investigate the energetics and the electronic structure of these models through first-principles density functional theory calculations. These models may be useful in understanding experimental results on the reactivity of Si clusters and their shape as inferred from mobility measurements.Comment: 9 figures (available from the author upon request) Submitted to Phys.     Secondary attachments and adolescent self concept

    This study examined the popular notion that crushes or secondary attachments to celebrity figures are an important aspect of self-concept development during adolescence. In a repeated measures design, 79 male and female 5th, 8th, and 11th graders and college sophomores completed a set of personality scales, first describing themselves and later, describing the favorite celebrity. Repeated measures multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) analysis of self-object congruence revealed no significant main or interaction effects for the type of attachment, gender, or age of subject. Significant within subject effects were obtained for the repeated measures factor (self-object congruence). Overall, students perceived their attachment objects to be more agentic, yet less expressive and emotionally vulnerable than themselves. MANOVA analyses indicated that males and older students perceived their attachment objects to be higher in agency than expressivity, whereas females and younger students perceived their attachment objects to be higher in expressivity than agency.
