Mathematical structure of the temporal gauge
The mathematical structure of the temporal gauge of QED is critically
examined in both the alternative formulations characterized by either
positivity or regularity of the Weyl algebra. The conflict between time
translation invariance and Gauss law constraint is shown to lead to peculiar
features. In the positive case only the correlations of exponentials of fields
exist (non regularity), the space translations are not strongly continuous, so
that their generators do not exist, a theta vacuum degeneracy occurs,
associated to a spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the indefinite case the
spectral condition only holds in terms of positivity of the energy, gauge
invariant theta-vacua exist on the observables, with no extension to time
translation invariant states on the field algebra, the vacuum is faithful on
the longitudinal algebra and a KMS structure emerges. Functional integral
representations are derived in both cases, with the alternative between ergodic
measures on real random fields or complex Gaussian random fields.Comment: Late
Scheduling science on television: A comparative analysis of the representations of science in 11 European countries
While science-in-the-media is a useful vehicle for understanding the media, few scholars have used it that way: instead, they look at science-in-the-media as a way of understanding science-in-the-media and often end up attributing characteristics to science-in-the-media that are simply characteristics of the media, rather than of the science they see there. This point of view was argued by Jane Gregory and Steve Miller in 1998 in Science in Public. Science, they concluded, is not a special case in the mass media, understanding science-in-the-media is mostly about understanding the media (Gregory and Miller, 1998: 105). More than a decade later, research that looks for patterns or even determinants of science-in-the-media, be it in press or electronic media, is still very rare. There is interest in explaining the media’s selection of science content from a media perspective. Instead, the search for, and analysis of, several kinds of distortions in media representations of science have been leading topics of science-in-the-media research since its beginning in the USA at the end of the 1960s and remain influential today (see Lewenstein, 1994; Weigold, 2001; Kohring, 2005 for summaries). Only a relatively small amount of research has been conducted seeking to identify factors relevant to understanding how science is treated by the mass media in general and by television in particular. The current study addresses the lack of research in this area. Our research seeks to explore which constraints national media systems place on the volume and structure of science programming in television. In simpler terms, the main question this study is trying to address is why science-in-TV in Europe appears as it does. We seek to link research focussing on the detailed analysis of science representations on television (Silverstone, 1984; Collins, 1987; Hornig, 1990; Leon, 2008), and media research focussing on the historical genesis and current political regulation of national media systems (see for instance Hallin and Mancini, 2004; Napoli, 2004; Open Society Institute, 2005, 2008). The former studies provide deeper insights into the selection and reconstruction of scientific subject matters, which reflect and – at the same time – reinforce popular images of science. But their studies do not give much attention to production constraints or other relevant factors which could provide an insight into why media treat science as they do. The latter scholars inter alia shed light on distinct media policies in Europe which significantly influence national channel patterns. However, they do not refer to clearly defined content categories but to fairly rough distinctions such as information versus entertainment or fictional versus factual. Accordingly, we know more about historical roots and current practices of media regulation across Europe than we do about the effects of these different regimes on the provision of specific content in European societies

This entry traces the history of journalism studies and asks whether journalism studies are a discipline or field or research method. Different interests involved in journalism studies – journalists, journalism educators and journalism scholars - make it difficult to find a single vision of what it entails. As a new field it requires its own methodologies even though these may be borrowed from other disciplines. It also requires its own body of literature. The origins of journalism studies are somewhat imprecise but we can identify five phases of evolution: normative, empirical turn, sociological turn, global-comparative turn, and digital turn. Journalism studies also encompass the education of journalists. Many journalism scholars now reside in journalism departments side by side with their practitioner colleagues. Historically the study and practice of journalism was entwined over the debate of whether the occupation of journalism should be regarded as a craft or a profession and indeed its place in the academy
Modulation of hippocampal acetylcholine release after fimbria-fornix lesions and septal transplantation in rats
Female Long-Evans rats sustained electrolytic lesions of the fimbria and the dorsal fornix causing a partial lesion of the septohippocampal pathway. Two weeks later, the rats received intra-hippocampal grafts of fetal septal cell suspensions. Nine to twelve months later, the release of acetylcholine (ACh) in the hippocampus of sham-operated, lesion-only and grafted rats was measured by microdialysis. The extent of cholinergic (re)innervation was determined by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) staining and densitometry. In both lesion-only and grafted rats, the ratio of ACh release to AChE staining intensity was increased as compared to sham-operated rats, indicating a loss of endogenous inhibitory mechanisms. Scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg i.p.), a muscarinic antagonist, increased ACh release in all treatment groups. 8-OH-DPAT (0.5 mg/kg s.c.), an agonist at serotonergic 5HT1A-receptors, induced an increase of hippocampal ACh release in sham-operated rats. This effect was lost in lesion-only rats, but was fully restored by neuronal grafting. As 8-OH-DPAT influences hippocampal ACh release by a postsynaptic action, this finding indicates that the host brain exerts a serotonergic influence on the grafted cholinergic neurons
A brief history of news making in Russia
In this introductory article to our special issue on newsmaking in Russia, we provide a context for how the study of journalism evolved in Russia in contrast to Europe and the US. This brief historical overview helps make sense of the specific trajectory of journalism studies: from normative Cold War perspectives to a highly diverse and vibrant field that considers journalistic agency, the interplay of commercialisation and media control and the complexities of a rapidly changing media environment.
