Environmental concentrations of anti-androgenic pharmaceuticals do not impact sexual disruption in fish alone or in combination with steroid oestrogens
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Sexual disruption in wild fish has been linked to the contamination of river systems with steroid oestrogens, including the pharmaceutical 17α-ethinylestradiol, originating from domestic wastewaters. As analytical chemistry has advanced, more compounds derived from the human usage of pharmaceuticals have been identified in the environment and questions have arisen as to whether these additional pharmaceuticals may also impact sexual disruption in fish. Indeed, pharmaceutical anti-androgens have been shown to induce such effects under laboratory conditions. These are of particular interest since anti-androgenic biological activity has been identified in the aquatic environment and is potentially implicated in sexual disruption alone and in combination with steroid oestrogens. Consequently, predictive modelling was employed to determine the concentrations of two anti-androgenic human pharmaceuticals, bicalutamide and cyproterone acetate, in UK sewage effluents and river catchments and their combined impacts on sexual disruption were then assessed in two fish models. Crucially, fish were also exposed to the anti-androgens in combination with steroid oestrogens to determine whether they had any additional impact on oestrogen induced feminisation. Modelling predicted that the anti-androgenic pharmaceuticals were likely to be widespread in UK river catchments. However, their concentrations were not sufficient to induce significant responses in plasma vitellogenin concentrations, secondary sexual characteristics or gross indices in male fathead minnow or intersex in Japanese medaka alone or in combination with steroid oestrogens. However, environmentally relevant mixtures of oestrone, 17β-oestradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol did induce vitellogenin and intersex, supporting their role in sexual disruption in wild fish populations. Unexpectedly, a male dominated sex ratio (100% in controls) was induced in medaka and the potential cause and implications are briefly discussed, highlighting the potential of non-chemical modes of action on this endpoint
Normal metal - insulator - superconductor interferometer
Hybrid normal metal - insulator - superconductor microstructures suitable for
studying an interference of electrons were fabricated. The structures consist
of a superconducting loop connected to a normal metal electrode through a
tunnel barrier . An optical interferometer with a beam splitter can be
considered as a classical analogue for this system. All measurements were
performed at temperatures well below 1 K. The interference can be observed as
periodic oscillations of the tunnel current (voltage) through the junction at
fixed bias voltage (current) as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field.
The magnitude of the oscillations depends on the bias point. It reaches a
maximum at energy which is close to the superconducting gap and decreases
with an increase of temperature. Surprisingly, the period of the oscillations
in units of magnetic flux is equal neither to nor to
, but significantly exceeds these values for larger loop circumferences.

Suction mechanism for iron entrainment into the lower mantle
Perturbations in the Earth's rotation rate at decadal time periods strongly favor the existence of dissipative coupling at the Core–Mantle Boundary (CMB). Here, we explored the plausibility of maintaining a conducting layer on the mantle-side of the CMB, which can couple the outer core and mantle through Lorentz torques. We propose a suction mechanism that maintains a porous medium on the mantle side of the CMB, with the interconnected pore-space partly or entirely filled with liquid iron up to a thickness of ∼1 km. The suction arises from the deviatoric stresses supported by the mantle-solid in regions of mantle downwelling. Infiltration of liquid iron occurs by percolation, but is inhibited by the rate of viscous dilation of the solid mantle. Our model enables core-mantle material exchange, and maintains a thin conducting layer that has seismic detection potential. Our model is only marginally satisfactory in explaining the inferred CMB coupling
Nonequilibrium steady states of driven magnetic flux lines in disordered type-II superconductors
We investigate driven magnetic flux lines in layered type-II superconductors
subject to various configurations of strong point or columnar pinning centers
by means of a three-dimensional elastic line model and Metropolis Monte Carlo
simulations. We characterize the resulting nonequilibrium steady states by
means of the force-velocity / current-voltage curve, static structure factor,
mean vortex radius of gyration, number of double-kink and half-loop
excitations, and velocity / voltage noise spectrum. We compare the results for
the above observables for randomly distributed point and columnar defects, and
demonstrate that the three-dimensional flux line structures and their
fluctuations lead to a remarkable variety of complex phenomena in the

Active link mechanisms for physical man-machine interaction
<p>In this paper, we propose a new type of haptic interface, named active link mechanism. This device realizes physical man-machine interaction (PMI) between machines and persons. Two prototypes were developed to demonstrate the potential of the active link mechanisms. Developed interface devices are an active tetrahedron and an active icosahedron. Nine-DOF micro spherical joints and pressure control pneumatic cylinders were developed to realize the active tetrahedron, while fifteen-DOF micro spherical joints and intelligent pneumatic cylinders were developed for the active icosahedron. The tetrahedron successfully realizes "virtual touch"; the operators feel actions, forces, and shapes of the virtual objects in PC and also move and deform them. Real time PMI is realized by building the developed devices into MSC.Visual-Nastran4D. MSC.VisuaI-Nastran4D is a mechanism analysis software, which can make motion analysis in real time. The active icosahedron also realized dynamic interaction with virtual objects in PC, showing the potential of the devices as a haptic interface.</p></p
On Detection of Black Hole Quasi-Normal Ringdowns: Detection Efficiency and Waveform Parameter Determination in Matched Filtering
Gravitational radiation from a slightly distorted black hole with ringdown
waveform is well understood in general relativity. It provides a probe for
direct observation of black holes and determination of their physical
parameters, masses and angular momenta (Kerr parameters). For ringdown searches
using data of gravitational wave detectors, matched filtering technique is
useful. In this paper, we describe studies on problems in matched filtering
analysis in realistic gravitational wave searches using observational data.
Above all, we focus on template constructions, matches or signal-to-noise
ratios (SNRs), detection probabilities for Galactic events, and accuracies in
evaluation of waveform parameters or black hole hairs. We have performed
matched filtering analysis for artificial ringdown signals which are generated
with Monte-Carlo technique and injected into the TAMA300 observational data. It
is shown that with TAMA300 sensitivity, the detection probability for Galactic
ringdown events is about 50% for black holes of masses greater than with SNR . The accuracies in waveform parameter estimations
are found to be consistent with the template spacings, and resolutions for
black hole masses and the Kerr parameters are evaluated as a few % and , respectively. They can be improved up to and for events
of by using fine-meshed template bank in the hierarchical

High Field magnetospectroscopy to probe the 1.4eV Ni color center in diamond
A magneto-optical study of the 1.4 eV Ni color center in boron-free synthetic
diamond, grown at high pressure and high temperature, has been performed in
magnetic fields up to 56 T. The data is interpreted using the effective spin
Hamiltonian of Nazar\'e, Nevers and Davies [Phys. Rev. B 43, 14196 (1991)] for
interstitial Ni with the electronic configuration and effective
spin . Our results unequivocally demonstrate the trigonal symmetry of
the defect which preferentially aligns along the [111] growth direction on the
(111) face, but reveal the shortcomings of the crystal field model for this
