Level-of-Aspiration Theory and Initial Stance in Bargaining

    Get PDF
This research focuses on the effect of initial stance in bargaining. Following level-of-aspiration theory, the research examines whether the pattern of early concession making modifies the impact of tough vs. soft initial stance. The experiment manipulated opponent\u27s concession pattern (decreasing, constant, increasing) in the early phase of bargaining within an overall tough or soft initial stance. Results indicated that a decreasing concession pattern within the early bargaining extracted larger initial concessions than a constant or increasing concession pattern. Implications for Siegel and Fouraker\u27s (1960) level-of-aspiration theory are discussed

A new concept of hyperspectral instrument is presented. Novel design of hyperspectral skydome allows retrieval of atmospheric constituents and properties from a snapshot of spectral solar radiation over entire sky, regardless of platform motion either on ground or aircraft. Design and description of subsystems of the instrument are given followed by preliminary tolerance analysis, whose results are to be added in the retrieval algorithm along with hardware specifications. Extended application of the hyperspectral skydome is being carried out filling in the gap in the imaging spectrometry

Design sensitivity analysis and optimization of built-up structures

Developments during the course of the research in design sensitivity analysis and optimization of built-up structures, with both sizing and shape design variables, show clearly that a unified variational approach to design sensitivity analysis can yield derivatives of structural response with respect to design. Rigorous and practically computable results for structural components and built-up structures have been demonstrated and used to solve design optimization problems

Common Mitochondrial DNA Mutations Generated through DNA-Mediated Charge Transport

    Get PDF
Mutation sites that arise in human mitochondrial DNA as a result of oxidation by a rhodium photooxidant have been identified. HeLa cells were incubated with [Rh(phi)2bpy]Cl3 (phi is 9,10-phenanthrenequinone diimine), an intercalating photooxidant, to allow the complex to enter the cell and bind mitochondrial DNA. Photoexcitation of DNA-bound [Rh(phi)2bpy]3+ can promote the oxidation of guanine from a distance through DNA-mediated charge transport. After two rounds of photolysis and growth of cells incubated with the rhodium complex, DNA mutations in a portion of the mitochondrial genome were assessed via manual sequencing. The mutational pattern is consistent with dG to dT transversions in the repetitive guanine tracts. Significantly, the mutational pattern found overlaps oxidative damage hot spots seen previously. These mutations are found within conserved sequence block II, a critical regulatory element involved in DNA replication, and these have been identified as sites of low oxidation potential to which oxidative damage is funneled. On the basis of this mutational analysis and its correspondence to sites of long-range oxidative damage, we infer a critical role for DNA charge transport in generating these mutations and, thus, in regulating mitochondrial DNA replication under oxidative stress

    Detecting Galactic Binaries with LISA

One of the main sources of gravitational waves for the LISA space-borne interferometer are galactic binary systems. The waveforms for these sources are represented by eight parameters, of which four are extrinsic, and four are intrinsic to the system. Geometrically, these signals exist in an 8-d parameter space. By calculating the metric tensor on this space, we calculate the number of templates needed to search for such sources. We show in this study that below a particular monochromatic frequency, we can ignore one of the intrinsic parameters and search over a 7-d space. Beyond this frequency, we have a sudden change in dimensionality of the parameter space from 7 to 8 dimensions, which results in a change in the scaling of the growth of template number as a function of monochromatic frequency.Comment: 7 pages-2 figures.
