    Cluster Extended Dynamical Mean Field Approach and Unconventional Superconductivity

    The extended dynamical mean field theory has played an important role in the study of quantum phase transitions in heavy fermion systems. In order to incorporate the physics of unconventional superconductivity, we develop a cluster version of the extended dynamical mean field theory. In this approach, we show how magnetic order and superconductivity develop as a result of inter-site spin exchange interactions, and analyze in some detail the form of correlation functions. We also discuss the methods that can be used to solve the dynamical equations associated with this approach. Finally, we consider different settings in which our approach can be applied, including the periodic Anderson model for heavy fermion systems.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, Replaced with published versio

    Sudden stoppage of rotor in a thermally driven rotary motor made from double-walled carbon nanotubes

    In a thermally driven rotary motor made from double-walled carbon nanotubes, the rotor (inner tube) can be actuated to rotate within the stator (outer tube) when the environmental temperature is high enough. A sudden stoppage of the rotor can occur when the inner tube has been actuated to rotate at a stable high speed. To find the mechanisms of such sudden stoppages, eight motor models with the same rotor but different stators are built and simulated in the canonical NVT ensembles. Numerical results demonstrate that the sudden stoppage of the rotor occurs when the difference between radii is near 0.34 nm at a high environmental temperature. A smaller difference between radii does not imply easier activation of the sudden rotor stoppage. During rotation, the positions and electron density distribution of atoms at the ends of the motor show that a sp(1) bonded atom on the rotor is attracted by the sp(1) atom with the biggest deviation of radial position on the stator, after which they become two sp(2) atoms. The strong bond interaction between the two atoms leads to the loss of rotational speed of the rotor within 1 ps. Hence, the sudden stoppage is attributed to two factors: the deviation of radial position of atoms at the stator's ends and the drastic thermal vibration of atoms on the rotor in rotation. For a stable motor, sudden stoppage could be avoided by reducing deviation of the radial position of atoms at the stator's ends. A nanobrake can be, thus, achieved by adjusting a sp(1) atom at the ends of stator to stop the rotation of rotor quickly.The authors are grateful for financial support from the National Natural-Science-Foundation of China (Grant Nos. 50908190, 11372100)

    Spin-injection Hall effect in a planar photovoltaic cell

    Successful incorporation of the spin degree of freedom in semiconductor technology requires the development of a new paradigm allowing for a scalable, non-destructive electrical detection of the spin-polarization of injected charge carriers as they propagate along the semiconducting channel. In this paper we report the observation of a spin-injection Hall effect (SIHE) which exploits the quantum-relativistic nature of spin-charge transport and which meets all these key requirements on the spin detection. The two-dimensional electron-hole gas photo-voltaic cell we designed to observe the SIHE allows us to develop a quantitative microscopic theory of the phenomenon and to demonstrate its direct application in optoelectronics. We report an experimental realization of a non-magnetic spin-photovoltaic effect via the SIHE, rendering our device an electrical polarimeter which directly converts the degree of circular polarization of light to a voltage signal.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Numerical Investigation on Flow Separation Control of Low Reynolds Number Sinusoidal Aerofoils

    The paper presents a computational analysis of the characteristics of a NACA 634- 021 aerofoil incorporated with sinusoidal leading-edge protuberances at Re = 14,000. The protuberances are characterized by an amplitude and wavelength of 12% and 50% of the aerofoil chord length respectively. An unsteady Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) analysis of the full-span aerofoils was carried out using Transition SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model across five different angles-of-attack (AOA). Comparisons with previous experimental results reported good qualitative agreements in terms of flow separation when the aerofoils are pitched at higher AOAs. Results presented here comprised of near-wall flow visualizations of the flow separation bubble at the peaks and troughs of the protuberances. Additionally, results indicate that the aerofoil with leading-edge protuberances displayed distinctive wall shear streamline and iso-contour characteristics at different span-wise positions. This implies that even at a low Reynolds number, implementations of these leading-edge protuberances could have positive or adverse effects on flow separation

    Responses to intensity-shifted auditory feedback during running speech

    PURPOSE: Responses to intensity perturbation during running speech were measured to understand whether prosodic features are controlled in an independent or integrated manner. METHOD: Nineteen English-speaking healthy adults (age range = 21-41 years) produced 480 sentences in which emphatic stress was placed on either the 1st or 2nd word. One participant group received an upward intensity perturbation during stressed word production, and the other group received a downward intensity perturbation. Compensations for perturbation were evaluated by comparing differences in participants' stressed and unstressed peak fundamental frequency (F0), peak intensity, and word duration during perturbed versus baseline trials. RESULTS: Significant increases in stressed-unstressed peak intensities were observed during the ramp and perturbation phases of the experiment in the downward group only. Compensations for F0 and duration did not reach significance for either group. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with previous work, speakers appear sensitive to auditory perturbations that affect a desired linguistic goal. In contrast to previous work on F0 perturbation that supported an integrated-channel model of prosodic control, the current work only found evidence for intensity-specific compensation.
