    Fundamental frequency height as a resource for the management of overlap in talk-in-interaction.

    Overlapping talk is common in talk-in-interaction. Much of the previous research on this topic agrees that speaker overlaps can be either turn competitive or noncompetitive. An investigation of the differences in prosodic design between these two classes of overlaps can offer insight into how speakers use and orient to prosody as a resource for turn competition. In this paper, we investigate the role of fundamental frequency (F0) as a resource for turn competition in overlapping speech. Our methodological approach combines detailed conversation analysis of overlap instances with acoustic measurements of F0 in the overlapping sequence and in its local context. The analyses are based on a collection of overlap instances drawn from the ICSI Meeting corpus. We found that overlappers mark an overlapping incoming as competitive by raising F0 above their norm for turn beginnings, and retaining this higher F0 until the point of overlap resolution. Overlappees may respond to these competitive incomings by returning competition, in which case they raise their F0 too. Our results thus provide instrumental support for earlier claims made on impressionistic evidence, namely that participants in talk-in-interaction systematically manipulate F0 height when competing for the turn

    Propeller propulsion integration, phase 1

    A bibliography was compiled of all readily available sources of propeller analytical and experimental studies conducted during the 1930 through 1960 period. A propeller test stand was developed for the measurement of thrust and torque characteristics of full scale general aviation propellers and installed in the LaRC 30 x 60 foot full scale wind tunnel. A tunnel entry was made during the January through February 1980 period. Several propellers were tested, but unforseen difficulties with the shaft thrust torque balance severely degraded the data quality

    Spin Correlations in the Two-Dimensional Spin-5/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4

    Full text link
    We report a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin correlations in the two-dimensional spin S=5/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Rb_2MnF_4. The measured correlation lengths are quantitatively described, with no adjustable parameters, by high-temperature series expansion results and by a theory based on the quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Conversely, we find that the data, which cover the range from about 1 to 50 lattice constants, are outside of the regime corresponding to renormalized classical behavior of the quantum non-linear sigma model. In addition, we observe a crossover from Heisenberg to Ising critical behavior near the Neel temperature; this crossover is well described by a mean-field model with no adjustable parameters.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, with 6 included EPS figures, submitted to EPJ

    Flux-Confinement in Dilatonic Cosmic Strings

    Full text link
    We study dilaton-electrodynamics in flat spacetime and exhibit a set of global cosmic string like solutions in which the magnetic flux is confined. These solutions continue to exist for a small enough dilaton mass but cease to do so above a critcal value depending on the magnetic flux. There also exist domain wall and Dirac monopole solutions. We discuss a mechanism whereby magnetic monopolesmight have been confined by dilaton cosmic strings during an epoch in the early universe during which the dilaton was massless.Comment: 8 pages, DAMTP R93/3

    Hume: A Hard, Red winter Wheat

    Each year South Dakota farmers have been seeding about 2,250,000 acres of wheat of which 600,000 acres have been winter wheat. Nebred, a Turkey type wheat released in 1938 by Nebraska, has been dominant, constituting about 23% of the winter wheat acreage in 1965 and 45% in 1964. In the severe stem rust year of 1962 Nebred made up about 80% of the acreage. Losses to winter wheat growers from stem rust in 1962 were estimated in excess of $20,000,000. Other varieties susceptible to stem rust and still in use are Warrior, Omaha, Wichita, Cheyenne, and Bison

    Effective-Hamiltonian parameters for \emph{ab initio} energy-level calculations of SrCl2_{2}:Yb2+^{2+} and CsCaBr3_{3}:Yb2+^{2+}

    Full text link
    Calculated energy levels from recent \emph{ab initio} studies of the electronic structure of SrCl2_{2}:Yb2+^{2+} and CsCaBr3_{3}:Yb2+^{2+} are fitted with a semi-empirical "crystal-field" Hamiltonian, which acts within the model space 4f14+4f135d+4f136s4f^{14} + 4f^{13}5d + 4f^{13}6s. Parameters are obtained for the minima of the potential-energy curves for each energy level and also for a range of anion-cation separations. The parameters are compared with published results parameters fitted to experimental data and to atomic calculations. The states with significant 4f136s4f^{13}6s character give a good approximation of the impurity-trapped exciton states that appear in the \emph{ab initio} calculations.Comment: Minor revisio
