Climate model simulation of winter warming and summer cooling following the 1991 Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption
We simulate climate change for the 2-year period following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines on June 15, 1991, with the ECHAM4 general circulation model (GCM). The model was forced by realistic aerosol spatial-time distributions and spectral radiative characteristics calculated using Stratospheric Aerosol, and Gas Experiment II extinctions and Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite-retrieved effective radii. We calculate statistical ensembles of GCM simulations with and without volcanic aerosols for 2 years after the eruption for three different sea surface temperatures (SSTs): climatological SST, El Nino-type SST of 1991-1993, and La Nina-type SST of 1984-1986. We performed detailed comparisons of calculated fields with observations, We analyzed the atmospheric response to Pinatubo radiative forcing and the ability of the GCM to reproduce it with different SSTs. The temperature of the tropical lower stratosphere increased by 4 K because of aerosol absorption of terrestrial longwave and solar near-infrared radiation. The heating is larger than observed, but that is because in this simulation we did not account for quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) cooling and the cooling effects of volcanically induced ozone depletion. We estimated that both QBO and ozone depletion decrease the stratospheric temperature by about 2 K. The remaining 2 K stratospheric warming is in good agreement with observations. By comparing the runs with the Pinatubo aerosol forcing with those with no aerosols, we find that the model calculates a general cooling of the global troposphere, but with a clear winter warming pattern of surface air temperature over Northern Hemisphere continents. This pattern is consistent with the observed temperature patterns. The stratospheric heating and tropospheric summer cooling are directly caused by aerosol radiative effects, but the winter warming is indirect, produced by dynamical responses to the enhanced stratospheric latitudinal temperature gradient. The aerosol radiative forcing, stratospheric thermal response, and summer tropospheric cooling do not depend significantly on SST. Uncertainty Estimates for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Data
Sources of uncertainty are reviewed for calculated atomic and molecular data
that are important for plasma modeling: atomic and molecular structure and
cross sections for electron-atom, electron-molecule, and heavy particle
collisions. We concentrate on model uncertainties due to approximations to the
fundamental many-body quantum mechanical equations and we aim to provide
guidelines to estimate uncertainties as a routine part of computations of data

Structure and transport in multi-orbital Kondo systems
We consider Kondo impurity systems with multiple local orbitals, such as rare
earth ions in a metallic host or multi--level quantum dots coupled to metallic
leads. It is shown that the multiplet structure of the local orbitals leads to
multiple Kondo peaks above the Fermi energy , and to ``shadow'' peaks
below . We use a slave boson mean field theory, which recovers the strong
coupling Fermi liquid fixed point, to calculate the Kondo peak positions,
widths, and heights analytically at T=0, and NCA calculations to fit the
temperature dependence of high--resolution photoemission spectra of Ce
compounds. In addition, an approximate conductance quantization for transport
through multi--level quantum dots or single--atom transistors in the Kondo

High-precision measurement of the half-life of Ga
The beta-decay half-life of 62Ga has been studied with high precision using
on-line mass separated samples. The decay of 62Ga which is dominated by a 0+ to
0+ transition to the ground state of 62Zn yields a half-life of T_{1/2} =
116.19(4) ms. This result is more precise than any previous measurement by
about a factor of four or more. The present value is in agreement with older
literature values, but slightly disagrees with a recent measurement. We
determine an error weighted average value of all experimental half-lives of

In a numerical Monte Carlo simulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with light
dynamical gluinos the low energy features of the dynamics as confinement and
bound state mass spectrum are investigated. The motivation is supersymmetry at
vanishing gluino mass. The performance of the applied two-step multi-bosonic

Hepatic progenitor cells from adult human livers for cell transplantation.
Objective: Liver regeneration is mainly based on cellular
self-renewal including progenitor cells. Efforts have been
made to harness this potential for cell transplantation, but
shortage of hepatocytes and premature differentiated
progenitor cells from extra-hepatic organs are limiting
factors. Histological studies implied that resident cells in
adult liver can proliferate, have bipotential character and
may be a suitable source for cell transplantation.
Methods: Particular cell populations were isolated after
adequate tissue dissociation. Single cell suspensions were
purified by Thy-1 positivity selection, characterised in vitro
and transplanted in immunodeficient Pfp/Rag2 mice.
Results: Thy-1+ cells that are mainly found in the portal
tract and the surrounding parenchyma, were isolated from
surgical liver tissue with high yields from specimens with
histological signs of regeneration. Thy-1+ cell populations
were positive for progenitor (CD34, c-kit, CK14, M2PK,
OV6), biliary (CK19) and hepatic (HepPar1) markers
revealing their progenitor as well as hepatic and biliary
nature. The potential of Thy-1+ cells for differentiation in
vitro was demonstrated by increased mRNA and protein
expression for hepatic (CK18, HepPar1) and biliary (CK7)
markers during culture while progenitor markers CK14,
chromogranin A and nestin were reduced. After
transplantation of Thy-1+ cells into livers of immunodeficient
mice, engraftment was predominantly seen in the
periportal portion of the liver lobule. Analysis of in situ
material revealed that transplanted cells express human
hepatic markers HepPar1 and albumin, indicating functional
engraftment.
Conclusion: Bipotential progenitor cells from human
adult livers can be isolated using Thy-1 and might be a
potential candidate for cell treatment in liver diseases
Companion plants and straw mulch reduce cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) damage on oilseed rape
Plant diversification, especially sowing crops with the addition of companion plants has been demonstrated as a suitable practice to increase insect pest control in multiple cropping systems. Since the ban on use of neonicotinoid seed treatments in oilseed rape (OSR), the harvested area has reduced significantly in Europe, mainly because of the damage caused by cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala). Several companion plants such as legumes and other species of Brassicaceae have been reported as potential companions for OSR but robust evaluation of their efficiency to reduce cabbage stem flea beetle damage in replicated trials is lacking.
Four field trials were conducted in the UK and Germany to test the effect of different companion plants, or the addition of straw mulch, on cabbage stem flea beetle adult feeding and larval infestation in OSR. We found significant differences in the level of feeding damage between treatments in all experiments. Combinations of OSR with cereal companion plants or with straw mulch showed the strongest reduction in adult feeding damage. A protective effect of legumes was also observed in one trial. Differences in larval infestation were also observed between treatments but were not consistent and might be more related to the OSR plant biomass than to treatments.
This study shows that companion planting can protect OSR crops from cabbage stem flea beetle adult feeding damage. We show for the first time that not only legumes, but also cereals and the application of straw mulch can have a strong protective effect on the crop
