The Radio Jet Associated with the Multiple V380 Ori System
The giant Herbig-Haro object 222 extends over 6 in the plane of the
sky, with a bow shock morphology. The identification of its exciting source has
remained uncertain over the years. A non-thermal radio source located at the
core of the shock structure was proposed to be the exciting source. However,
Very Large Array studies showed that the radio source has a clear morphology of
radio galaxy and a lack of flux variations or proper motions, favoring an
extragalactic origin. Recently, an optical-IR study proposed that this giant HH
object is driven by the multiple stellar system V380 Ori, located about 23
to the SE of HH 222. The exciting sources of HH systems are usually detected as
weak free-free emitters at centimeter wavelengths. Here we report the detection
of an elongated radio source associated with the Herbig Be star or with its
close infrared companion in the multiple V380 Ori system. This radio source has
the characteristics of a thermal radio jet and is aligned with the direction of
the giant outflow defined by HH~222 and its suggested counterpart to the SE,
HH~1041. We propose that this radio jet traces the origin of the large scale HH
outflow. Assuming that the jet arises from the Herbig Be star, the radio
luminosity is a few times smaller than the value expected from the
radio-bolometric correlation for radio jets, confirming that this is a more
evolved object than those used to establish the correlation.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Plasmatic E-selectin levels were decreased in young women with metabolic syndrome after exercise training
Cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) such as E-selectin are involved in the rolling, adhesion and extravasation of monocytes into the atherosclerotic plaque. Fortunately regular exercise may improve pro-inflammatory status in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Accordingly, this study was designed to determine the influence of exercise on soluble plasmatic E-selectin levels in women with metabolic syndrome. Sixty adult women with metabolic syndrome according to the criteria reported by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III volunteered for this study. Fourty-five were randomly included in experimental group to perform a 12-weeks aerobic training program, 3 days/week, consisting of warm up (10-min), main part (20-35-min [increasing 5 minutes each 3 weeks]) at a work intensity of 60-75% of peak heart rate (increasing 5% each 3 weeks) and cool-down(10-min). Control group included 15 age, sex and BMI-matched women with metabolic syndrome that will not perform any program. Written informed consent was obtained. Further the protocol was approved by an institutional ethic committee. Plasmatic E-Selectin levels was measured by ELISA, using a commercially available kit (Parameter, R&D Systems) twice: 72-hours before starting the program (pre-test) and after its ending (post-test).Results: When compared to baseline soluble E-Selectin concentration was significantly decreased after the 6-weeks protocol (76.4±7.2 vs 57.1±6.4 ng/ml; p\u3c0.05). A study on the discrimination of human skeletons using X-ray fluorescence and chemometric tools in chemical anthropology
Forensic anthropological investigations are often restricted in their outcomes by the resources allocated to them, especially in terms of positively identifying the victims exhumed from commingled mass graves. Commingled mass graves can be defined as those graves that contain a number of disarticulated human remains from different individuals that have been mixed by either natural processes or human interventions. The research developed aimed to apply the technique of non-destructive XRF analysis to test whether there is substantial differentiation within the trace elemental composition and their ratios of individuals to separate them using chemometric analysis. The results of the different atomic spectroscopic analyses combined with the use of multivariate analysis on a set of 5 skeletons produced a series of plots using Principal Component Analysis that helped to separate them with a high percentage of accuracy when two, three or four skeletons needed to be separated. Also, two new elemental ratios, Zn/Fe related to metabolic activities and K/Fe related to blood flow into the bone, have been defined for their use in forensic anthropology for the first time to aid in the separation. © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd
