Fast high-efficiency integrated waveguide photodetectors using novel hybrid vertical/butt coupling geometry
We report a novel coupling geometry for integrated waveguide photodetectorsâa hybrid vertical coupling/butt coupling scheme that allows the integration of fast, efficient, photodetectors with conventional double heterostructure waveguides. It can be employed to yield a planar, or pseudo-planar, surface that supports further levels of integration. The approach is demonstrated with a 25-”m-long p-i-n detector integrated with an InP/InGaAsP/InP waveguide, which displays a high (~90%) efficiency and large (~15 GHz) bandwidth. This is the fastest high-efficiency integrated waveguide photodetector reported to date
Bosonic D-branes at finite temperature with an external field
Bosonic boundary states at finite temperature are constructed as solutions of
boundary conditions at for bosonic open strings with a constant gauge
field coupled to the boundary. The construction is done in the
framework of thermo field dynamics where a thermal Bogoliubov transformation
maps states and operators to finite temperature. Boundary states are given in
terms of states from the direct product space between the Fock space of the
closed string and another identical copy of it. By analogy with zero
temperature, the boundary states heve the interpretation of -brane at
finite temperature. The boundary conditions admit two different solutions. The
entropy of the closed string in a -brane state is computed and analysed. It
is interpreted as the entropy of the -brane at finite temperature.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, revised version with minor corrections and

Gauge Invariance in Chern-Simons Systems
We show explicitly that the question of gauge invariance of the effective
potential in standard scalar electrodynamics remains unchanged despite the
introduction of the Chern-Simons term. The result does not depend on the
presence of the Maxwell term in the Chern-Simons territory.Comment: 10 pages, Plain Tex, DF/UFPB-14/9
WDM Detection Using Integrated Grating Demultiplexer And High Density p-i-n Array
Multi-wavelength systems are being advocated for use in future telecommunication networks and for computer processor links. In research systems the multiplexing and demultiplexing of the different wavelength signals is currently achieved through the use of bulk optical components. When channel separation are on the order of a nm or so - which is typical of 'high density' direct
detection systems - the MUX/DMUX function is generally done with a diffraction grating. WDM detection at the receiver end is then obtained by assembling a detector array, placed in the focal plane of the optical grating system
Qualitative Properties of Magnetic Fields in Scalar Field Cosmology
We study the qualitative properties of the class of spatially homogeneous
Bianchi VI_o cosmological models containing a perfect fluid with a linear
equation of state, a scalar field with an exponential potential and a uniform
cosmic magnetic field, using dynamical systems techniques. We find that all
models evolve away from an expanding massless scalar field model in which the
matter and the magnetic field are negligible dynamically. We also find that for
a particular range of parameter values the models evolve towards the usual
power-law inflationary model (with no magnetic field) and, furthermore, we
conclude that inflation is not fundamentally affected by the presence of a
uniform primordial magnetic field. We investigate the physical properties of
the Bianchi I magnetic field models in some detail.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures in REVTeX format. to appear in Phys. Rev.
Internal transport barriers in the National Spherical Torus Experiment
In the National Spherical Torus Experiment [M. Ono , Nucl. Fusion 41, 1435 (2001)], internal transport barriers (ITBs) are observed in reversed (negative) shear discharges where diffusivities for electron and ion thermal channels and momentum are reduced. While neutral beam heating can produce ITBs in both electron and ion channels, high harmonic fast wave heating can also produce electron ITBs (e-ITBs) under reversed magnetic shear conditions without momentum input. Interestingly, the location of the e-ITB does not necessarily match that of the ion ITB (i-ITB). The e-ITB location correlates best with the magnetic shear minima location determined by motional Stark effect constrained equilibria, whereas the i-ITB location better correlates with the location of maximum ExB shearing rate. Measured electron temperature gradients in the e-ITB can exceed critical gradients for the onset of electron thermal gradient microinstabilities calculated by linear gyrokinetic codes. A high-k microwave scattering diagnostic shows locally reduced density fluctuations at wave numbers characteristic of electron turbulence for discharges with strongly negative magnetic shear versus weakly negative or positive magnetic shear. Reductions in fluctuation amplitude are found to be correlated with the local value of magnetic shear. These results are consistent with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations predicting a reduction in electron turbulence under negative magnetic shear conditions despite exceeding critical gradients.X1128sciescopu
Enhanced Supersymmetry of Nonrelativistic ABJM Theory
We study the supersymmetry enhancement of nonrelativistic limits of the ABJM
theory for Chern-Simons level . The special attention is paid to the
nonrelativistic limit (known as `PAAP' case) containing both particles and
antiparticles. Using supersymmetry transformations generated by the monopole
operators, we find additional 2 kinematical, 2 dynamical, and 2 conformal
supercharges for this case. Combining with the original 8 kinematical
supercharges, the total number of supercharges becomes maximal: 14
supercharges, like in the well-known PPPP limit. We obtain the corresponding
super Schr\"odinger algebra which appears to be isomorphic to the one of the
PPPP case. We also discuss the role of monopole operators in supersymmetry
enhancement and partial breaking of supersymmetry in nonrelativistic limit of
the ABJM theory.Comment: 22 pages, references added, version to appear in JHE
Measurements of proton induced reaction cross sections on 120Te for the astrophysical p-process
The total cross sections for the 120Te(p,gamma)121I and 120Te(p,n)120I
reactions have been measured by the activation method in the effective
center-of-mass energies between 2.47 MeV and 7.93 MeV. The targets were
prepared by evaporation of 99.4 % isotopically enriched 120Te on Aluminum and
Carbon backing foils, and bombarded with proton beams provided by the FN tandem
accelerator at the University of Notre Dame. The cross sections and factors
were deduced from the observed gamma ray activity, which was detected off-line
by two Clover HPGe detectors mounted in close geometry. The results are
presented and compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations
using the codes NON-SMOKER and TALYS.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables, regular articl
Gauge Invariant Effective Potential for Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons Systems
We investigate the effective potential for Abelian Maxwell--Chern--Simons
systems. The calculations follow an alternate approach, recently proposed as a
gauge invariant formulation of the effective potential, constructed in terms of
a gauge invariant order parameter. We compare the results with another
investigation, obtained within a standard route of calculating the effective
potential.Comment: 10 pages. Revtex. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Monolithic WDM Sources And Detectors For The Long Wavelength Fiber Band Based On An InP Grating Multiplexer/demultiplexer
Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) networks are currently attracting considerable attention worldwide. Applications envisaged are wide-ranging - from computer back-plane interconnects and the telephone local loop, through local- and metropolitan- area networks, to wide-area networks involving advanced wavelength routing schemes [1, 2]
