Bosonic String and String Field Theory: a solution using Ultradistributions of Exponential Type

In this paper we show that Ultradistributions of Exponential Type (UET) are appropriate for the description in a consistent way string and string field theories. A new Lagrangian for the closed string is obtained and shown to be equivalent to Nambu-Goto's Lagrangian. We also show that the string field is a linear superposition of UET of compact support CUET). We evaluate the propagator for the string field, and calculate the convolution of two of them.Comment: 30 page

The Rarita-Schwinger Particles Under de Influence of Strong Magnetic Fields

In this work, we calculate the solutions of the Rarita-Schwinger equation with the inclusion of the eletromagnetic interaction. Our gauge and coupling prescription choices lead to Dirac-type solutions. One of the consequences of our results are the Landau level occupation of particles, quite different from the usual spin 1/2 particle system occupation numbers.Comment: 12 page

Cross-cultural validation of health literacy measurement tools in Italian oncology patients

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric characteristics of four Health Literacy (HL) measurement tools, viz. Newest Vital Sign (NVS), Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (STOFHLA), Single Item Literacy Screener (SILS) and Single question on Self-rated Reading Ability (SrRA) among Italian oncology patients. Methods: The original version of the tools were translated from the English language into Italian using a standard forward-backward procedure and according to internationally recognized good practices. Their internal consistency (reliability) and validity (construct, convergent and discriminative) were tested in a sample of 245 consecutive cancer patients recruited from seven Italian health care centers. Results: The internal consistency of the STOFHLA-I was Chronbach's α=0.96 and that of NVS-I was α=0.74. The STOFHLA-I, NVS-I, SILS-I and SrRA-I scores were in a good relative correlation and in all tools the discriminative known-group validity was confirmed. The reliability and validity values were similar to those obtained from other cultural context studies. Conclusion: The psychometric characteristics of the Italian version of NVS, STHOFLA, SILS and SrRA were found to be good, with satisfactory reliability and validity. This indicates that they could be used as a screening tool in Italian patients. Moreover, the use of the same cross-cultural tools, validated in different languages, is essential for implementing multicenter studies to measure and compare the functional HL levels across countries

Prospective, Multicenter Phase II Trial of Non-Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin Combined with Ifosfamide in First-Line Treatment of Advanced/Metastatic Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Doxorubicin is a widely used anticancer agent as a first-line treatment for various tumor types, including sarcomas. Its use is hampered by adverse events, among which is the risk of dose dependence. The potential cardiotoxicity, which increases with higher doses, poses a significant challenge to its safe and effective application. To try to overcome these undesired effects, encapsulation of doxorubicin in liposomes has been proposed. Caelyx and Myocet are different formulations of pegylated (PLD) and non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (NPLD), respectively. Both PLD and NPLD have shown similar activity compared with free drugs but with reduced cardiotoxicity. While the hand–foot syndrome exhibits a high occurrence among patients treated with PLD, its frequency is notably reduced in those receiving NPLD. In this prospective, multicenter, one-stage, single-arm phase II trial, we assessed the combination of NPLD and ifosfamide as first-line treatment for advanced/metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Patients received six cycles of NPLD (50 mg/m2) on day 1 along with ifosfamide (3000 mg/m2 on days 1, 2, and 3 with equidose MESNA) administered every 3 weeks. The overall response rate, yielding 40% (95% CI: 0.29–0.51), resulted in statistical significance; the disease control rate stood at 81% (95% CI: 0.73—0.90), while only 16% (95% CI: 0.08–0.24) of patients experienced a progressive disease. These findings indicate that the combination of NPLD and ifosfamide yields a statistically significant response rate in advanced/metastatic STS with limited toxicity

Peroxide Antimalarial Drugs Target Redox Homeostasis in Plasmodium Falciparum Infected Red Blood Cells

Plasmodium falciparum causes the most lethal form of malaria. Peroxide antimalarials based on artemisinin underpin the frontline treatments for malaria, but artemisinin resistance is rapidly spreading. Synthetic peroxide antimalarials, known as ozonides, are in clinical development and offer a potential alternative. Here, we used chemoproteomics to investigate the protein alkylation targets of artemisinin and ozonide probes, including an analogue of the ozonide clinical candidate, artefenomel. We greatly expanded the list of proteins alkylated by peroxide antimalarials and identified significant enrichment of redox-related proteins for both artemisinins and ozonides. Disrupted redox homeostasis was confirmed by dynamic live imaging of the glutathione redox potential using a genetically encoded redox-sensitive fluorescence-based biosensor. Targeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based thiol metabolomics also confirmed changes in cellular thiol levels. This work shows that peroxide antimalarials disproportionately alkylate proteins involved in redox homeostasis and that disrupted redox processes are involved in the mechanism of action of these important antimalarials

Comparação entre rações para frangos de corte mais vendidas no Rio Grande do Sul. III. Rendimento Econômico

Six different commercial broiler rations were compared as to performance and economic aspects. The six rations selected were those sold in the greatest volume. Significant differences in gain of weight and feed conversion were found. However, these data alone were insufficient to classify the rations according to their economic value. It was necessary to consider the total production cost to determine the most profitable ration.São estudados e discutidos a performance e o aspecto econômico da criação de frangos de corte com seis rações diferentes.
