Spintronics via non-axisymmetric chiral skyrmions
Micromagnetic calculations demonstrate a peculiar evolution of
non-axisymmetric skyrmions driven by an applied magnetic field in confined
helimagnets with longitudinal modulations. We argue that these specific
solitonic states can be employed in nanoelectronic devices as an effective
alternative to the common axisymmetric skyrmions which occur in magnetically
saturated states
Antiferromagnetism in NiO Observed by Transmission Electron Diffraction
Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate antiferromagnetism since
1949. Here we show that antiferromagnetic reflections can also be seen in
transmission electron diffraction patterns from NiO. The diffraction patterns
taken here came from regions as small as 10.5 nm and such patterns could be
used to form an image of the antiferromagnetic structure with a nanometre
resolution.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Typos corrected. To appear in Physical Review

Quantum Frequency Translation of Single-Photon States in Photonic Crystal Fiber
We experimentally demonstrate frequency translation of a nonclassical optical
field via the Bragg scattering four-wave mixing process in a photonic crystal
fiber (PCF). The high nonlinearity and the ability to control dispersion in PCF
enable efficient translation between photon channels within the visible
to-near-infrared spectral range, useful in quantum networks. Heralded single
photons at 683 nm were translated to 659 nm with an efficiency of percent. Second-order correlation measurements on the 683-nm and 659-nm
fields yielded and respectively, showing the nonclassical nature of both fields.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the ac Stark shift with a guided matter-wave interferometer
We demonstrate the effectiveness of a guided-wave Bose-Einstein condensate
interferometer for practical measurements. Taking advantage of the large arm
separations obtainable in our interferometer, the energy levels of the 87Rb
atoms in one arm of the interferometer are shifted by a calibrated laser beam.
The resulting phase shifts are used to determine the ac polarizability at a
range of frequencies near and at the atomic resonance. The measured values are
in good agreement with theoretical expectations. However, we observe a
broadening of the transition near the resonance, an indication of collective
light scattering effects. This nonlinearity may prove useful for the production
and control of squeezed quantum states.Comment: 5 pages, three figure
Intensity fluctuations in steady state superradiance
Alkaline-earth like atoms with ultra-narrow optical transitions enable
superradiance in steady state. The emitted light promises to have an
unprecedented stability with a linewidth as narrow as a few millihertz. In
order to evaluate the potential usefulness of this light source as an
ultrastable oscillator in clock and precision metrology applications it is
crucial to understand the noise properties of this device. In this paper we
present a detailed analysis of the intensity fluctuations by means of
Monte-Carlo simulations and semi-classical approximations. We find that the
light exhibits bunching below threshold, is to a good approximation coherent in
the superradiant regime, and is chaotic above the second threshold.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Extension of the Huttner-Barnett model to a magnetodielectric medium
The HuttnerBarnett model is extended to a magnetodielectric medium by
adding a new matter field to this model. The eigenoperators for the coupled
system are calculated and electromagnetic field is written in terms of these
operators. The electric and magnetic susceptibility of the medium are
explicitly derived and shown to satisfy the KramersKronig relations. It is
shown that the results obtained in this model are equivalent to the results
obtained from the phenomenological methods.Comment: 25 page
Polarization entanglement visibility of photon pairs emitted by a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity
We study the photon emission from a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity.
Incoherent pumping of its excitons and biexciton provokes the emission of leaky
and cavity modes. By solving a master equation we obtain the correlation
functions required to compute the spectrum and the relative efficiency among
the emission of pairs and single photons. A quantum regime appears for low
pumping and large rate of emission. By means of a post-selection process, a two
beams experiment with different linear polarizations could be performed
producing a large polarization entanglement visibility precisely in the quantum
regime.Comment: 13 pages and 6 figure
