    SU(5) Gravitating Monopoles

Spherically symmetric solutions of the SU(5) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system are constructed using the harmonic map ansatz \cite{IS}. This way the problem reduces to solving a set of ordinary differential equations for the appropriate profile functions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 Figure

The 1-soliton in the SO(3) gauged Skyrme model with mass term

    Get PDF
The solitons of the SO(3) gauged Skyrme model with no pion-mass potential were studied in Refs. {nl,jmp}. Here, the effects of the inclusion of this potential are studied. In contrast with the (ungauged) Skyrme model, where the effect of this potential on the solitons is marginal, here it turns out to be decisive, resulting in very different dependence of the energy as a function of the Skyrme coupling constant.Comment: new title, typos corrected, LaTeX, 8 pages, 4 figure

Holographic Superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit

We study holographic superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit, i.e. taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We consider the case of pure Einstein- and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively. Similar to the probe limit we observe that the critical temperature at which condensation sets in decreases with increasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling. The decrease is however stronger when taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We observe that the critical temperature becomes very small, but stays positive for all values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling no matter how strong the back-reaction of the space-time is.Comment: 10 pages including 5 figures; references adde

    Inflating branes inside abelian strings

We study a 6-dimensional brane world model with an abelian string residing in the two extra dimensions. We study both static as well as inflating branes and find analytic solutions for the case of trivial matter fields in the bulk. Next to singular space-times, we also find solutions which are regular including cigar-like universes as well as solutions with periodic metric functions. These latter solutions arise if in a singular space-time a static brane is replaced by an inflating brane. We determine the pattern of generic solutions for positive, negative and zero bulk cosmological constant.Comment: 14 Latex pages, 11 postscript figures; references added, discussion extended; reference adde

A General Approach of Quasi-Exactly Solvable Schroedinger Equations

    Get PDF
We construct a general algorithm generating the analytic eigenfunctions as well as eigenvalues of one-dimensional stationary Schroedinger Hamiltonians. Both exact and quasi-exact Hamiltonians enter our formalism but we focus on quasi-exact interactions for which no such general approach has been considered before. In particular we concentrate on a generalized sextic oscillator but also on the Lame and the screened Coulomb potentials.Comment: 23 pages, no figur

Particle-like solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills systems in d dimensions

    Get PDF
We consider the superposition of the first two members of the gravitational hierarchy (Einstein plus first Gauss-Bonnet(GB)) interacting with the superposition of the first two members of the SO(±)(d)SO_{(\pm)}(d) Yang--Mills hierarchy, in dd dimensions. Such systems can occur in the low energy effective action of string theory. Particle-like solutions %for the systems with only an Einstein term, and with only a GB term, in dimensions d=6,8d=6,8 are constructed respectively. Our results reveal qualitatively new properties featuring double-valued solutions with critical behaviour. In this preliminary study, we have restricted ourselves to one-node solutions.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

Irreducible Representations of an Algebra underlying Hidden Symmetries of a class of Quasi Exactly Solvable Systems of Equations

The set of linear, differential operators preserving the vector space of couples of polynomials of degrees n and n-2 in one real variable leads to an abstract associative graded algebra A(2). The irreducible, finite dimensional representations of this algebra are classified into five infinite discrete sets and one exceptional case. Their matrix elements are given explicitely. The results are related to the theory of quasi exactly solvable equations.Comment: 38 pages, late

Gravitating monopoles in SU(3) gauge theory

    Get PDF
We consider the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations for an SU(3) gauge group in a spherically symmetric ansatz. Several properties of the gravitating monopole solutions are obtained an compared with their SU(2) counterpart.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, 3 figure

On Axially Symmetric Solutions in the Electroweak Theory

We present the general ansatz, the energy density and the Chern-Simons charge for static axially symmetric configurations in the bosonic sector of the electroweak theory. Containing the sphaleron, the multisphalerons and the sphaleron-antisphaleron pair at finite mixing angle, the ansatz further allows the construction of the sphaleron and multisphaleron barriers and of the bisphalerons at finite mixing angle. We conjecture that further solutions exist.Comment: 17 pages, latex, THU-94/0
