    Philosophy of Teaching and Student and Peer Mentorship: A Christian Perspective

    As Professors our students have the multifaceted status of being 1) our customers, 2) our product and 3) our future colleagues. In addition as Christians, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ or those we influence for His glory. As customers they have a choice where to pursue their education and have expectations. Some expectations are reasonable, some we need to recalibrate for them. As our product, their professional growth and abilities are to varying degrees a result of, and to a very large degree, a reflection of us and our institutions. As graduates employed in an industry we participate in and serve, they will become colleagues who will recall our relationship when they were students. As Christians and those whose souls we are concerned for, we need to demonstrate and teach how to live the faith in their profession, and seek their spiritual growth and welfare as they grow academically and transition to their professional lives. We find ourselves rapidly switching roles from salesman, to customer service agent, to concierge, to manufacturing process optimizer, to trainer, to quality inspector, to warden or judge, to mentor, to friend, to career/life coach, to make shift pre-marital counselor, to poorly prepared emergency Pastor, to collaborator, to friend, and to brother or sister in Christ. In the mist of this chaos we are committed to teach classes to meet the requisite needs for career success and accreditation. How we teach; quality, demeanor, and life example is as important as what we teach. A contemplated and written Philosophy of Teaching makes executing these diverse responsibilities easier and beyond that, a Philosophy of Student Mentorship can uniquely help us as Christian faculty. A sample of each philosophy will be presented and discussed as a starting point for subsequent individual creative thoughts and document generation

    Tourism is a social phenomenon, driven by the natural urge of human beings to experience new places, cuisines, and destinations. The tourism industry being an established industry is considered as a vehicle for economic development. It is amongst the top ten sectors in India as it attracts a high level of foreign direct investment (FDI).The tourism industry has contributed a lot to the economy by attracting a large number of both foreign and domestic tourists travelling for professional as well as holiday purposes. This results in increased foreign exchange income and greater employment opportunities that stimulate the growth of tourism industry as well the overall economic growth.This research is mainly directed towards finding out the contribution of tourism sector towards the GDP of the country and giving suggestions on ways to improve it further. The possibilities of improvement and increase of foreign cash inflow is a crucial part of tourism sector towards contributions to the economy. The researcher has used correlation and regression to establish the relationship as well as the influence of the tourism sector towards GDP and has found a positive impact, and this has been evident in all the countries. But if we compare the GDP contribution of the tourism sector from a world perspective, Indian tourism sector has not contributed enough to GDP. World average contribution from tourism sector towards GDP is 9.8%,but India’s contribution towards GDP is 6.7%. This shows that there is huge opportunity in Indian tourism sector, and this huge opportunity has to be capitalized through government policies and reforms

    This commentary expands upon Bracken & Mawdsley's (2004) paper, ‘Muddy glee: rounding out the picture of women and physical geography fieldwork’ to consider the experiences of LGBTQI+ people. Reflecting on our own fieldwork experiences between the early 1990s and today, we provide personal insight into some of the challenges faced by LGBTQI+ field scientists. Although the nature of our personal challenges differs through time, space and our own specific identities and intersectionalities, we concur that exclusion of LGBTQI+ people is a widespread problem in fieldwork. This is true of many different modes of physical fieldwork, suggesting that redefining what fieldwork looks like does not automatically remove barriers to entry for marginalised groups. Instead, we argue that inclusivity should be championed across all types of field activities, and that discipline-wide effort is required to ensure safe strategies are developed for all at-risk individuals

    Examining the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, long form (IPAQ-LC)

    Objective : To investigate the reliability and the validity of the long format, Chinese version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-LC). Design : Cross-sectional study, examining the reliability and validity of the IPAQ-LC compared with a physical activity log (PA-log) and objective accelerometry. Setting : Self-reported physical activity (PA) in Hong Kong adults. Subjects : A total of eighty-three Chinese adults (forty-seven males, thirty-six females) were asked to wear an ActiTrainer accelerometer (MTI-ActiGraph, Fort Walton Beach, FL, USA) for >10 h over 7 d, to complete a PA-log at the end of each day and to complete the IPAQ-LC on day 8. On a sub-sample of twenty-eight adults the IPAQ-LC was also administered on day 11 to assess its reliability. Results : The IPAQ-LC had good test–retest reliability for grouped activities, with intra-class correlation coefficients ranging from 0·74 to 0·97 for vigorous, moderate, walking and total PA, with between-test effect sizes that were small (<0·49). The Spearman correlation coefficients were statistically significant for vigorous PA (r = 0·28), moderate + walking PA (r = 0·27), as well as overall PA (r = 0·35), when compared with the accelerometry-based criterion measures, but none of the IPAQ activity categories correlated significantly with the PA-log. In absolute units, only the IPAQ light and overall PA did not differ significantly from the accelerometry measures, yet overall PA was able to faithfully discriminate between quartiles of PA (P = 0·019) when compared to accelerometry. Conclusions : The IPAQ-LC demonstrated adequate reliability and showed sufficient evidence of validity in assessing overall levels of habitual PA to be used on Hong Kong adults

    Brownian molecular motors driven by rotation-translation coupling

    We investigated three models of Brownian motors which convert rotational diffusion into directed translational motion by switching on and off a potential. In the first model a spatially asymmetric potential generates directed translational motion by rectifying rotational diffusion. It behaves much like a conventional flashing ratchet. The second model utilizes both rotational diffusion and drift to generate translational motion without spatial asymmetry in the potential. This second model can be driven by a combination of a Brownian motor mechanism (diffusion driven) or by powerstroke (drift driven) depending on the chosen parameters. In the third model, elements of both the Brownian motor and powerstroke mechanisms are combined by switching between three distinct states. Relevance of the model to biological motor proteins is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
