Pressure-induced Spin-Peierls to Incommensurate Charge-Density-Wave Transition in the Ground State of TiOCl

The ground state of the spin-Peierls system TiOCl was probed using synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a single-crystal sample at T = 6 K. We tracked the evolution of the structural superlattice peaks associated with the dimerized ground state as a function of pressure. The dimerization along the b axis is rapidly suppressed in the vicinity of a first-order structural phase transition at Pc = 13.1(1) GPa. The high-pressure phase is characterized by an incommensurate charge density wave perpendicular to the original spin chain direction. These results show that the electronic ground state undergoes a fundamental change in symmetry, indicating a significant change in the principal interactions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Symbols is one aspect which indicates something beyond itself. Symbol means the process of communcation among participants. Symbols occur in different forms: verbal or nonverbal, written or unwritten. They can be anything that conveys meaning, such as word on the page, drawings, pictures, and gesture. In this research, the writer takes Rune symbols in movie The Mortal Instruments directed by Harsld Zwart as an object of research. Runes are ancient alphabet that has existed long ago. Runes have the power of mystery and religious significance that should be in question. That's why the writer choose this title for the object of research. The aim of the research is to identify and analyze symbol as media in studying semiotics especially in movie The Mortal Instruments. The collected data are analyzed based on Peirce's theory and Clare and Lewis theorys. The writer used a descriptive method in this research. As a result of this research to find some symbols Rune on the movie namely The Mortal Instruments directed by Harald Zwart that is Rune Angelic, Rune Courage, Rune Craft/clairvoyant sight, Rune Deflect/Block, Rune Enkeli, Rune Fortitude, Rune Iratze Heal, Rune Talent, Rune Night vision,Rune Precision, Rune Promise, Rune Visible, Rune Soundless, Rune Strength, and Rune Voyance. Every Rune have a meaning and the meaning of each's Rune, among others: erased all traces of the devil, giving effect to the courage and without hesitation, make the vision for the better, protecting users from the enemy's attack, destroying a devil, give the power in forceful and round, Rune a cure, can stop time that the devil, can do a difficult task, loyalty in to the shadow hunters, Rune can hypnotize, Rune that pose no voice, Rune that can improve his physical strength of the shadow hunters, and Rune who can see the events that occured in the past

Kinetic energies of fragment ions produced by dissociative photoionization of NO

    Get PDF
The kinetic energies of ions produced by dissociative photoionization of NO have been measured at the discrete resonance lines of He (584A) and Ne (736A), and with undispersed synchrotron radiation. O sup + ions were identified with energies from 0 to approximately 0.5 eV and two groups of N sup + ions one with energy of 0.36 eV and another with energies between 0.9 and 1.5 eV, apparently produced by predissociation of the C sup 3 P 1 and B'1 sigma states respectively

Leptonic universality breaking in Upsilon decays as a probe of new physics

In this work we examine the possible existence of new physics beyond the standard model which could modify the branching fractions of the leptonic (mainly tauonic) decays of bottomonium vector resonances below the BBˉB\bar{B} threshold. The decay width is factorized as the product of two pieces: a) the probability of an intermediate pseudoscalar color-singlet bbˉb\bar{b} state (coupling to the dominant Fock state of the Upsilon via a magnetic dipole transition) and a soft (undetected) photon; b) the annihilation width of the bbˉb\bar{b} pair into two leptons, mediated by a non-standard CP-odd Higgs boson of mass about 10 GeV, introducing a quadratic dependence on the lepton mass in the partial width. The process would be unwittingly ascribed to the Υ\Upsilon leptonic channel thereby (slightly) breaking lepton universality. A possible mixing of the pseudoscalar Higgs and bottomonium resonances is also considered. Finally, several experimental signatures to check out the validity of the conjecture are discussed.Comment: LaTeX, 22 pages, 2 EPS figure

On the use of Neumann's principle for the calculation of the polarizability tensor of nanostructures

The polarizability measures how the system responds to an applied electrical field. Computationally, there are many different ways to evaluate this tensorial quantity, some of which rely on the explicit use of the external perturbation and require several individual calculations to obtain the full tensor. In this work, we present some considerations about symmetry that allow us to take full advantage of Neumann's principle and decrease the number of calculations required by these methods. We illustrate the approach with two examples, the use of the symmetries in real space and in spin space in the calculation of the electrical or the spin response.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnolog

The free energy in a class of quantum spin systems and interchange processes

We study a class of quantum spin systems in the mean-field setting of the complete graph. For spin S=12S=\tfrac12 the model is the Heisenberg ferromagnet, for general spin S12NS\in\tfrac12\mathbb{N} it has a probabilistic representation as a cycle-weighted interchange process. We determine the free energy and the critical temperature (recovering results by T\'oth and by Penrose when S=12S=\tfrac12). The critical temperature is shown to coincide (as a function of SS) with that of the q=2S+1q=2S+1 state classical Potts model, and the phase transition is discontinuous when S1S\geq1.Comment: 22 page

Bottomonium spectroscopy with mixing of eta_b states and a light CP-odd Higgs

The mass of the eta_b(1S), measured recently by BABAR, is significantly lower than expected from QCD predictions for the Upsilon(1S) - eta_b(1S) hyperfine splitting. We suggest that the observed eta_b(1S) mass is shifted downwards due to a mixing with a CP-odd Higgs scalar A with a mass m_A in the range 9.4 - 10.5 GeV compatible with LEP, CLEO and BABAR constraints. We determine the resulting predictions for the spectrum of the eta_b(nS) - A system and the branching ratios into tau^+ tau^- as functions of m_A.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL, misprint correcte

Development of the preterm infant gut microbiome: a research priority.

    Get PDF
The very low birth weight (VLBW) infant is at great risk for marked dysbiosis of the gut microbiome due to multiple factors, including physiological immaturity and prenatal/postnatal influences that disrupt the development of a normal gut flora. However, little is known about the developmental succession of the microbiota in preterm infants as they grow and mature. This review provides a synthesis of our understanding of the normal development of the infant gut microbiome and contrasts this with dysbiotic development in the VLBW infant. The role of human milk in normal gut microbial development is emphasized, along with the role of the gut microbiome in immune development and gastroenteric health. Current research provides evidence that the gut microbiome interacts extensively with many physiological systems and metabolic processes in the developing infant. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are currently no studies prospectively mapping the gut microbiome of VLBW infants through early childhood. This knowledge gap must be filled to inform a healthcare system that can provide for the growth, health, and development of VLBW infants. The paper concludes with speculation about how the VLBW infants' gut microbiome might function through host-microbe interactions to contribute to the sequelae of preterm birth, including its influence on growth, development, and general health of the infant host

Power Spectra in a Zero-Range Process on a Ring: Total Occupation Number in a Segment

    Get PDF
We study the dynamics of density fluctuations in the steady state of a non-equilibrium system, the Zero-Range Process on a ring lattice. Measuring the time series of the total number of particles in a \emph{segment} of the lattice, we find remarkable structures in the associated power spectra, namely, two distinct components of damped-oscillations. The essential origin of both components is shown in a simple pedagogical model. Using a more sophisticated theory, with an effective drift-diffusion equation governing the stochastic evolution of the local particle density, we provide reasonably good fits to the simulation results. The effects of altering various parameters are explored in detail. Avenues for improving this theory and deeper understanding of the role of particle interactions are indicated.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figure
