    Piezomorphic materials

    The development of stress-induced morphing materials which are described as piezomorphic materials is reported. The development of a piezomorphic material is achieved by introducing spatial dependency into the compliance matrix describing the elastic response of a material capable of undergoing large strain deformation. In other words, it is necessary to produce an elastically gradient material. This is achieved through modification of the microstructure of the compliant material to display gradient topology. Examples of polymeric (polyurethane) foam and microporous polymer (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) piezomorphic materials are presented here. These materials open up new morphing applications where dramatic shape changes can be triggered by mechanical stress

    Visualisation Tools for Multi-Perspective, Cross-Sector, Long-Term Infrastructure Performance Evaluation

    Across different infrastructure sectors there are systems that help to monitor the current and near-future operation and performance of a particular system. Whilst Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are critical to maintaining acceptable levels of functionality, they do not provide insights over the longer timescales across which strategic investment decisions play out. To understand how individual or multiple, interdependent, infrastructure sectors perform over longer timescales, capacity/demand modelling is required. However, the outputs of such models are often a complex high-dimensionality result-set, and this complexity is further compounded when crosssector evaluation is required. To maximise utility of such models, tools are required that can process and present key outputs. In this paper we describe the development of prototype tools for infrastructure performance evaluation in relation to different strategic decisions and the complex outputs generated from capacity and demand models of five infrastructure sectors (energy, water, waste water, solid waste, transport) investigated within the UK Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium (ITRC). By constructing tools that expose various dimensions of the model outputs, a user is able to take greater control over the knowledge discovery process

    This paper briefly reviews highlights from decades of debates in medicine, law, bioethics, psychology and social research about children’s and parents’ views and consent to medical treatment and research. There appears to have been a rise and later a fall in respect for children’s views, illustrated among many examples by a recent book on the zone of parental discretion, which is reviewed. A return to greater respect for children’s views and consent is advocated

    A role for exercise in attenuating unhealthy food consumption in response to stress

    It is well established that both acute and chronic stress can be detrimental to health and wellbeing by directly increasing the risk of several chronic diseases and related health problems. In addition, stress may contribute to ill-health indirectly via its downstream effects on individuals' health-related behaviour, such as promoting the intake of unhealthy palatable foods high in fat and sugar content. This paper reviews (a) the research literature on stress-models; (b) recent research investigating stress-induced eating and (c) the potential physiological and psychological pathways contributing to stress-induced eating. Particular attention is given to (d) the role of physical exercise in attenuating acute stress, with exploration of potential mechanisms through which exercise may reduce unhealthy food and drink consumption subsequent to stressor exposure. Finally, exercise motivation is discussed as an important psychological influence over the capacity for physical exercise to attenuate unhealthy food and drink consumption after exposure to stressors. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of how physical exercise might alleviate stress-induced unhealthy food choices

    THE CONTRIBUTION OF ELBOW EXTENSION TO WRIST SPEED IN CRICKET FAST BOWLERS

    The purpose of this modelling study was to assess the sensitivity of wrist joint speed to systematic manipulations of empirical elbow joint flexion-extension kinematic profiles. The joint kinematic profiles of 12 cricket fast bowlers were entered into a Forward Kinematic Model and the elbow joint kinematic profiles were subsequently amplified to elicit wrist speed changes. An amplification factor of zero decreased wrist speed by a mean of 8.6% (± 6.9%), whereas an amplification factor of two increased speed by a mean of 8.8% (± 7.1%). An opposite relationship was found for two participants who extended the elbow joint prior to release and it is proposed that an internally rotated humerus will displace the wrist joint posteriorly when the elbow joint is extending

    Application of the penalty coupling method for the analysis of blood vessels

    Due to the significant health and economic impact of blood vessel diseases on modern society, its analysis is becoming of increasing importance for the medical sciences. The complexity of the vascular system, its dynamics and material characteristics all make it an ideal candidate for analysis through fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations. FSI is a relatively new approach in numerical analysis and enables the multi-physical analysis of problems, yielding a higher accuracy of results than could be possible when using a single physics code to analyse the same category of problems. This paper introduces the concepts behind the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation using the penalty coupling method. It moves on to present a validation case and compares it to available simulation results from the literature using a different FSI method. Results were found to correspond well to the comparison case as well as basic theory

    THE SYMMETRY ANGLE IDENTIFIES LESS CLINICALLY RELEVANT INTER-LIMB ASYMMETRIES THAN THE SYMMETRY INDEX IN HEALTHY ADULTS

    There are several methods for calculating inter-limb symmetry, an inter-limb difference ≥15% has been suggested as an indicator of sporting injury risk. The purpose of this study was to compare three common methods for determining symmetry: the Symmetry Index (percentage difference; SI) when referenced to the left limb (SILeft) or the average of both limbs (SIAverage), and the Symmetry Angle (vector difference; SA). 15 recreationally active participants completed a sprint protocol on a non-motorised treadmill. Accelerometers were positioned on both tibias to measure peak resultant acceleration (PRA). The SA identified less clinically relevant PRA inter-limb asymmetries than the SI in healthy adults. Once an appropriate level of asymmetry as measured by the SA is determined, this may help to more correctly identify asymmetry in athletes and patients than the SI
