    Lagrangian with off-shell vertices and field redefinitions

    Meson exchange diagrams following from a lagrangian with off-shell meson-nucleon couplings are compared with those generated from conventional dynamics. The off-shell interactions can be transformed away with the help of a nucleon field redefinition. Contributions to to the NNNN- and 3N3N-potentials and nonminimal contact e.m. meson-exchange currents are discussed, mostly for an important case of scalar meson exchange.     Glassy Mean-Field Dynamics of the Backgammon model

    In this paper we present an exact study of the relaxation dynamics of the backgammon model. This is a model of a gas of particles in a discrete space which presents glassy phenomena as a result of {\it entropy barriers} in configuration space. The model is simple enough to allow for a complete analytical treatment of the dynamics in infinite dimensions. We first derive a closed equation describing the evolution of the occupation number probabilities, then we generalize the analysis to the study the autocorrelation function.     Instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation: improved analytical solution

    Studying the Bethe-Salpeter formalism for interactions instantaneous in the rest frame of the bound states described, we show that, for bound-state constituents of arbitrary masses, the mass of the ground state of a given spin may be calculated almost entirely analytically with high accuracy, without the (numerical) diagonalization of the matrix representation obtained by expansion of the solutions over a suitable set of basis states.Comment: 7 page

    Relaxation processes and entropic traps in the Backgammon model

    We examine the density-density correlation function in a model recently proposed to study the effect of entropy barriers in glassy dynamics. We find that the relaxation proceeds in two steps with a fast beta process followed by alpha relaxation. The results are physically interpreted in the context of an adiabatic approximation which allows to separate the two processes, and to define an effective temperature in the off-equilibrium dynamics of the model. We investigate the behavior of the response function associated to the density, and find violations of the fluctuation dissipation theorem.Comment: 4 Pages including 3 Figures, Revte

    Accuracy of Approximate Eigenstates

    Besides perturbation theory, which requires, of course, the knowledge of the exact unperturbed solution, variational techniques represent the main tool for any investigation of the eigenvalue problem of some semibounded operator H in quantum theory. For a reasonable choice of the employed trial subspace of the domain of H, the lowest eigenvalues of H usually can be located with acceptable precision whereas the trial-subspace vectors corresponding to these eigenvalues approximate, in general, the exact eigenstates of H with much less accuracy. Accordingly, various measures for the accuracy of the approximate eigenstates derived by variational techniques are scrutinized. In particular, the matrix elements of the commutator of the operator H and (suitably chosen) different operators, with respect to degenerate approximate eigenstates of H obtained by some variational method, are proposed here as new criteria for the accuracy of variational eigenstates. These considerations are applied to that Hamiltonian the eigenvalue problem of which defines the "spinless Salpeter equation." This (bound-state) wave equation may be regarded as the most straightforward relativistic generalization of the usual nonrelativistic Schroedinger formalism, and is frequently used to describe, e.g., spin-averaged mass spectra of bound states of quarks.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, Int.     RBSC-NVSS Sample. I. Radio and Optical Identifications of a Complete Sample of 1500 Bright X-ray Sources

    We cross-identified the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog (RBSC) and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) to construct the RBSC-NVSS sample of the brightest X-ray sources (>= 0.1 counts/s or ~1E-12 ergs/cm/cm/s in the 0.1-2.4 keV band) that are also radio sources (S >= 2.5 mJy at 1.4 GHz) in the 7.8 sr of extragalactic sky with |b| > 15 degrees. and delta > -40 degrees. The sky density of NVSS sources is low enough that they can be reliably identified with RBSC sources having average rms positional uncertainties = 10 arcsec. We used the more accurate radio positions to make reliable X-ray/radio/optical identifications down to the POSS plate limits. We obtained optical spectra for many of the bright identifications lacking published redshifts. The resulting X-ray/radio sample is unique in its size (N ~ 1500 objects), composition (a mixture of nearly normal galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, quasars, and clusters), and low average redshift ( ~ 0.1).Comment: 35 LaTeX pages including 6 eps figures + 40 LaTeX page table2 (landscape) w/ AASTeX 5.0; accepted to ApJ

    Magnetic field induced charge and spin instabilities in cuprate superconductors

    A d-wave superconductor, subject to strong phase fluctuations, is known to suffer an antiferromagnetic instability closely related to the chiral symmetry breaking in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3). On the basis of this idea we formulate a "QED3 in a box" theory of local instabilities of a d-wave superconductor in the vicinity of a single pinned vortex undergoing quantum fluctuations around its equilibrium position. As a generic outcome we find an incommensurate 2D spin density wave forming in the neighborhood of a vortex with a concomitant "checkerboard" pattern in the local electronic density of states, in agreement with recent neutron scattering and tunneling spectroscopy measurements.Comment: 4 pages REVTeX + 2 PostScript figures included in text.
