    Exile and Integration in the British Isles : The case of Catholic clergymen converted to Protestantism in the reign of Louis XIV

    In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, just like the United Provinces or certain German states, the British Isles were a refuge for ex-members of the clergy who had converted at the time of the Protestant Reformation. Some joined the Church of England upon their arrival, but others converted to Calvinism.  The question of assimilation was then double for these men. On the one hand, it was linked to exile and the need to integrate into a new country whose language, customs and climate, among other factors, were different to that of the kingdom of France. On the other hand, this integration may have been trickier because of their conversion and the way the converted were perceived in the host societies. Exile was nevertheless a necessity for them. Indeed in the 1660s, Louis XIV forbade a clergyman to convert to Protestantism. Exile then was practically inevitable, his only alternative being to go into hiding.  However as ex-Catholics in their adopted land, particularly in England, known for its anti-Catholicism, they could only be regarded with great suspicion. What is then interesting is not so much to understand what they did to become assimilated in a new country and among new co-religionists, but the welcome they received and their reactions to it. The principal difficulty in studying such a question is that, among all of the ex-clergymen who converted and who took refuge in the British Isles, many left no trace, apart from their abjuration in a conformist or non-conformist Church.  The men who will appear here often published works after their conversion, whether they be conversion narratives for some of them, sermons and treatises for those who became pastors, or different writings relative to this question of assimilation. The authors cited the most here are Louis Désécotais , an ex-Capuchin, Jean-Baptiste Renoult , an ex-Cordelier, Charles Charlot d’Argenteuil , ex-regular canon and parish priest, and Jean-Baptiste Denis,  ex-priest. Thus, three principal points emerge: how did these ex-clergymen view their integration, how did they analyse the difficulties they came across, and what solutions did they find?

    Investigating the Dynamics between Price Volatility, Price Discovery, and Criminality in Cryptocurrency Markets

    This paper identifies several stylised facts relating to the volatility and price discovery process from eight cryptocurrencies utilising an empirical analysis of intra-day trading data to uncover four main results. First, cryptocurrencies exhibit weekend-volatility effects while intra-day volatility is found to be influenced by international trading times, periods of substantial volatility in the markets for oil, and GBP/USD and cybercrime events. Secondly, a thorough investigation of recent cybercriminality identifies that cryptocurrency hacks are found to increase both the volatility of the currency hacked and the correlations across the hacked currency and other cryptocurrencies. Thirdly, hacks significantly reduce price discovery sourced within the hacked currency relative to other cryptocurrencies. Finally, there are abnormal returns associated with the hacks observed in the hours prior to the actual hacking event, which reverts to zero at the time of the public announcement of the hack

    A Warp in Progress : H I and Radio Continuum Observations of the Spiral NGC 3145

    Date of Acceptance: 16/06/2015We present VLA H I and 6 cm radio continuum observations of the spiral NGC 3145 and H I observations of its two companions, NGC 3143 and PGC 029578. In optical images NGC 3145 has stellar arms that appear to cross, forming "X"-features. Our radio continuum observations rule out shock fronts at 3 of the 4 "X"-features. In the middle-to-outer disk, the H I line-profiles of NGC 3145 are skewed. Relative to the disk, the gas in the skewed wing of the line-profiles has z-motions away from us on the approaching side of the galaxy and z-motions of about the same magnitude (about 40 km/s) towards us on the receding side. These warping motions imply that there has been a perturbation with a sizeable component perpendicular to the disk over large spatial scales. Two features in NGC 3145 have velocities indicating that they are out-of-plane tidal arms. One is an apparent branch of a main spiral arm; the velocity of the branch is 150 km/s greater than the spiral arm where they appear to intersect in projection. The other is an arm that forms 3 of the "X"-features. It differs in velocity by 56 km/s from the disk at the same projected location. Based on its SFR and H I properties, NGC 3143 is the more likely of the two companions to have interacted with NGC 3145 recently. A simple analytic model demonstrates that an encounter between NGC 3143 and NGC 3145 is a plausible explanation for the observed warping motions in NGC 3145.Peer reviewe

    Purpose: To determine whether the addition of an anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) resulted in delayed functional recovery (based on the Knee Santy Athletic Return to Sport [K-STARTS] score) at 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from consecutive pa- tients who underwent an ACLR between September 2017 and December 2020 was conducted. Patients who received an isolated hamstring autograft (isolated ACLR group) were propensity matched in a 1:1 ratio to patients who received a hamstring autograft ACLR combined with an ALLR (ACLR-ALLR group). Outcome measures included the Tegner Activity Scale and the K-STARTS testda validated composite return-to-sports test (including the Anterior Cruciate LigamenteReturn to Sport After Injury scale, Qualitative Assessment of Single-Leg Landing tool, limb symmetry index, and ability to change direction using the Modified Illinois Change of Direction Test). Results: The study included 111 matched pairs. At 6 months postoperatively, there were no significant differences between groups in the overall K-STARTS score (65.4 for isolated ACLR vs 61.2 for ACLR-ALLR, P 1⁄4 .087) or the Tegner Activity Scale score (3.7 for isolated ACLR vs 3.8 for ACLR-ALLR, P 1⁄4 .45). In addition, an evaluation of the subscales of the K-STARTS score revealed no disadvantage across the domains of neuromuscular control, limb symmetry index, agility, or psychological readiness to return to sport when an ALLR was performed. Conclusions: The addition of ALLR at the time of ACLR does not delay functional recovery. Spe- cifically, at 6 months postoperatively, there was no disadvantage in patients undergoing ALLR-ACLR, when compared with those undergoing isolated ACLR, with respect to neuromuscular control, limb symmetry indices (hop tests), agility, or psychological readiness to return to sport

    A first glimpse into butchery practices in Pre-Pottery Neolithic Cyprus: Evidence on sheep and goat remains from six sites

    Butchery marks have not been considered very much in Cypriot zooarchaeology. This study aims to contribute towards filling this gap through a study of butchery marks on six Pre-Pottery Neolithic sheep and goat (caprine) assemblages in Cyprus. Taking into account the preservation condition of each assemblage, the analyses of the frequency and types of butchery marks, indicated some interesting trends. Most of these corroborate other lines of archaeological evidence indicating diversity in economic and social practices, which appear to vary both chronologically and geographically. Increased occurrence of butchery marks and differentiation in their types are compatible with a scenario of economic intensification in the 7th millennium cal. BC, at least at some sites. Moreover, the detection of butchery marks on caprine carcasses deposited in the vicinity of human remains in well 133 at Mylouthkia supports the interpretation of a deliberate deposition as part of Pre-Pottery Neolithic funerary practices in Cyprus

    Polygonal Structures in the Gaseous Disk: Numerical Simulations

    The results of numerical simulations of a gaseous disk in the potential of a stellar spiral density wave are presented. The conditions under which straightened spiral arm segments (rows) form in the gas component are studied. These features of the spiral structure were identified in a series of works by A.D. Chernin with coauthors. Gas-dynamic simulations have been performed for a wide range of model parameters: the pitch angle of the spiral pattern, the amplitude of the stellar spiral density wave, the disk rotation speed, and the temperature of the gas component. The results of 2D- and 3D-disk simulations are compared. The rows in the numerical simulations are shown to be an essentially nonstationary phenomenon. A statistical analysis of the distribution of geometric parameters for spiral patterns with rows in the observed galaxies and the constructed hydrodynamic models shows good agreement. In particular, the numerical simulations and observations of galaxies give 120\simeq 120^\circ for the average angles between straight segments.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure

    Interpreting physical performance in professional soccer match-play: Should we be more pragmatic in our approach?

    Academic and practitioner interest in the physical performance of male professional soccer players in the competition setting determined via time-motion analyses has grown substantially over the last four decades leading to a substantial body of published research and aiding development of a more systematic evidence-based framework for physical conditioning. Findings have forcibly shaped contemporary opinions in the sport with researchers and practitioners frequently emphasising the important role that physical performance plays in match outcomes. Time-motion analyses have also influenced practice as player conditioning programmes can be tailored according to the different physical demands identified across individual playing positions. Yet despite a more systematic approach to physical conditioning, data indicate that even at the very highest standards of competition, the contemporary player is still susceptible to transient and end-game fatigue. Over the course of this article, the author suggests that a more pragmatic approach to interpreting the current body of time-motion analysis data and its application in the practical setting is nevertheless required. Examples of this are addressed using findings in the literature to examine: a) the association between competitive physical performance and ‘success’ in professional soccer, b) current approaches to interpreting differences in time-motion analysis data across playing positions and, c) whether data can realistically be used to demonstrate the occurrence of fatigue in match-play. Gaps in the current literature and directions for future research are also identified
