    Doping and temperature-dependent optical properties of oxygen-reduced BaTiO3-d

    We report on optical properties of reduced BaTiO3-d at different doping levels including insulating and metallic samples. In all the samples, including metallic one, we observe structural phase transitions from the changes in the infrared-active phonon modes. Metallic ground state is confirmed by the Drude-type lowfrequency optical reflectance. Similar to SrTiO3-d we find that the midinfrared-absorption band in BaTiO3-d appears and grows with an increase in the oxygen-vacancy concentration. Upon decrease in temperature from 300 K, the midinfrared band shifts slightly to higher frequency and evolves into two bands: the existing band and a new and smaller band at lower frequency. Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) is the latest development from the DVB Project targeting handheld, battery powered devices such as mobile telephones, PDAs(Personal Digital Assistants), etc. Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) is the technology that is usually used in computer and telecommunication systems. Time slicing is one of the characteristics that makes it possible to broadcast high resolution TV programes and fast IP data services to battery powered handheld terminals. This paper discusses the characteristics and advantages of Time slicing algorithm in DVB-H and presents the performance analysis of time slicing in DVB-H through both theoretical analysis and software simulation

    A Chandra ACIS view of the Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant 3C391

    We present a 60 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the thermal composite supernova remnant 3C391. The southeast-northwest elongated morphology is similar to that previously found in radio and X-ray studies. This observation unveils a highly clumpy structure of the remnant. Detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis for the small-scale features reveals that the interior gas is generally of normal metal abundance and has approached or basically reached ionization equilibrium. The hydrogen column density increases from southeast to northwest. Three mechanisms, radiative rim, thermal conduction, and cloudlet evaporation, may all play roles in the X-ray appearance of 3C391 as a "thermal composite" remnant, but there are difficulties with each of them in explaining some physical properties. Comparatively, the cloudlet evaporation model is favored by the main characteristics such as the highly clumpy structure and the uniform temperature and density distribution over most of the remnant. The directly measured postshock temperature also implies a young age, about 4 kyr, for the remnant. The postshock gas pressure derived from the NE and SW rims, which harbor maser spots, is consistent with the estimate for the maser regions.     Power-law Behavior of High Energy String Scatterings in Compact Spaces

    We calculate high energy massive scattering amplitudes of closed bosonic string compactified on the torus. We obtain infinite linear relations among high energy scattering amplitudes. For some kinematic regimes, we discover that some linear relations break down and, simultaneously, the amplitudes enhance to power-law behavior due to the space-time T-duality symmetry in the compact direction. This result is consistent with the coexistence of the linear relations and the softer exponential fall-off behavior of high energy string scattering amplitudes as we pointed out prevously. It is also reminiscent of hard (power-law) string scatterings in warped spacetime proposed by Polchinski and Strassler.Comment: 6 pages, no figure.     Transient analysis using conical shell elements

    The use of the NASTRAN conical shell element in static, eigenvalue, and direct transient analyses is demonstrated. The results of a NASTRAN static solution of an externally pressurized ring-stiffened cylinder agree well with a theoretical discontinuity analysis. Good agreement is also obtained between the NASTRAN direct transient response of a uniform cylinder to a dynamic end load and one-dimensional solutions obtained using a method of characteristics stress wave code and a standing wave solution. Finally, a NASTRAN eigenvalue analysis is performed on a hydroballistic model idealized with conical shell elements

    Enhanced electroweak penguin amplitude in B-->VV decays

    We discuss a novel electromagnetic penguin contribution to the transverse helicity amplitudes in B decays to two vector mesons, which is enhanced by two powers of mB/Lambda relative to the standard penguin amplitudes. This leads to unique polarization signatures in penguin-dominated decay modes such as B-->rho K* similar to polarization effects in the radiative decay B-->K*gamma, and offers new opportunities to probe the magnitude and chirality of flavour-changing neutral current couplings to photons.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
