    Sufficient conditions for comparing the convolutions of heterogeneous gamma random variables in terms of the usual stochastic order are established. Such comparisons are characterized by the Schur convexity properties of the cumulative distribution function of the convolutions. Some examples of the practical applications of our results are given

    Physical and mathematical modelling of ladle metallurgy operations

    Experimental measurements are reported, on the velocity fields and turbulence parameters on a water model of an argon stirred ladle. These velocity measurements are complemented by direct heat transfer measurements, obtained by studying the rate at which ice rods immersed into the system melt, at various locations. The theoretical work undertaken involved the use of the turbulence Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with the kappa-epsilon model to predict the local velocity fields and the maps of the turbulence parameters. Theoretical predictions were in reasonably good agreement with the experimentally measured velocity fields; the agreement between the predicted and the measured turbulence parameters was less perfect, but still satisfactory. The implications of these findings to the modelling of ladle metallurgical operations are discussed

    The turbulent recirculating flow field in a coreless induction furnace. A comparison of theoretical predictions with measurements

    A mathematical representation for the electromagnetic force field and the fluid flow field in a coreless induction furnace is presented. The fluid flow field was represented by writing the axisymmetric turbulent Navier-Stokes equation, containing the electromagnetic body force term. The electromagnetic body force field was calculated by using a technique of mutual inductances. The kappa-epsilon model was employed for evaluating the turbulent viscosity and the resultant differential equations were solved numerically. Theoretically predicted velocity fields are in reasonably good agreement with the experimental measurements reported by Hunt and Moore; furthermore, the agreement regarding the turbulent intensities are essentially quantitative. These results indicate that the kappa-epsilon model provides a good engineering representation of the turbulent recirculating flows occurring in induction furnaces. At this stage it is not clear whether the discrepancies between measurements and the predictions, which were not very great in any case, are attributable either to the model or to the measurement techniques employed

    A mathematical representation was developed for the electromagnetic force field, the flow field, the temperature field (and for transport controlled kinetics), in a levitation melted metal droplet. The technique of mutual inductances was employed for the calculation of the electromagnetic force field, while the turbulent Navier - Stokes equations and the turbulent convective transport equations were used to represent the fluid flow field, the temperature field and the concentration field. The governing differential equations, written in spherical coordinates, were solved numerically. The computed results were in good agreement with measurements, regarding the lifting force, and the average temperature of the specimen and carburization rates, which were transport controlled

    Thermal Enhancement of Cellular Radiation Damage: A Review of Complementary and Synergistic Effects

    Hyperthermia treatment can kill mammalian cells in a time and temperature dependent manner. Thermal sensitivity varies extensively among various cell lines in culture and cellular molecular and ultrastructural studies have not resolved which cellular mechanisms underlie thermal cell killing and radiosensitization. The response of cells to heat and radiation are complementary under certain conditions found in human tumors, such as hypoxia, low pH, low nutrient and the S-phase of the cell cycle. Thus, hyperthermia can be used as a complementary treatment modality in the radiotherapy of human cancer. Further studies show that heat treatment causes radiosensitization which is in part associated with the inhibition of repair of radiation damage and is strongly dependent on temperature and on the sequencing. In addition, the conditions such as pH and oxygenation during treatment sequencing can influence the degree of recovery of cells. These factors may be exploited in optimizing therapeutic gain in clinical cancer therapy. Data are shown that transformation from the normal to the tumorigenic state causes random small changes in radiosensitivity and heat sensitivity. Also, treatments combining heat and radiation can lead to increased or decreased transformation in cells depending on the treatment sequence

    Photometry of SN 2002bo with template image subtraction

    VRI photometry of the type Ia supernova 2002bo is presented. This SN exploded in a dusty region of the host galaxy NGC 3190, thus, subtraction of a template frame was necessary to obtain reliable photometry. We used a template frame of NGC 3190 taken during the course of our galaxy imaging project, fortunately, just a few days before SN 2002bo was discovered. The aim of this project is to collect template frames of nearby galaxies that are potential hosts of bright SNe. Subtraction of pre-SN images helped us to exclude the background light contamination of the host galaxy. The maximum occurred at JD 2452346, with maximal V brightness of 13.58. MLCS analysis led to T0(B)=JD 2452346.1 pm 0.8 (fiducial B-maximum), E(B-V)=0.24 pm 0.02, mu0=32.46 pm 0.06, Delta=-0.14 pm 0.04. E(B-V)=0.24(2) indicates a significant extinction in the host galaxy as the galactic reddening is negligible toward NGC 3190. The accepted value of Delta indicates that SN 2002bo was a slightly overluminous SN by about 0.14 relative to fiducial SN Type Ia. The distance turned out to be 31.0 pm 3 Mpc. In addition, the heavily obscured SN 2002cv was also detected on the I frame taken on JD 2452434 (June 8, 2002), and a variable star is found in the field, very close to the host galaxy.Comment: accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
