    Discussion on improvements to the financial sustainability of the Finnish earnings-related pension system

    Abstract. The aging demographic in developed economies makes the funding of pension systems a current topic, and the decrease of contribution incomes relative to the pension benefits to be paid an inevitability. The prevailing low-interest rate regime increases the present values of pension provisions and forces pension funds to undertake riskier and less liquid investments. The existing literature on the funding sustainability of the Finnish and other earnings-related pension systems makes several suggestions of more or less significant overhauls of the systems. However, fewer direct comparisons to practices in use in other pension systems are made, or suggestions of quick yet sustainable fixes. Significant overhauls to pension systems are slowed down by countries’ respective political systems and the passions arising from social partners. Smaller updates could be easier and faster to implement while possibly leading to real increases in the sustainability of pension systems. This thesis compares the Danish, Dutch and Finnish occupational pension systems with the aim of making suggestions of updates to improve the long-term financial sustainability of the system in Finland. The pension systems in each country are described in detail, and the realized and forecast figures are then compared to infer best practices. The existing literature is comprehensively reviewed and, against the mainstream of the literature, a speculative calculation on the effects of increasing the contribution rate in Finland as a means to improve the long-term financial sustainability of the pension system is performed. Suggestions and calls for action are made regarding six areas: efforts to increase employment; efforts to increase total fertility; cases for either decreasing the level of funding of contributions or increasing the contribution rate; to compile pension agreements on the sectoral or industry levels; to update and limit the solvency capital requirements; and to implement a pension ceiling

    Synthesis of Oligodeoxyribo‐ and Oligoribonucleotides According to the H‐Phosphonate Method

    Oligonucleotides can be synthesized by condensing a protected nucleoside H‐phosphonate monoester with a second nucleoside in the presence of a coupling agent to produce a dinucleoside H‐phosphonate diester. This can then be converted to a dinucleoside phosphate or to a backbone‐modified analog such as a phosphorothioate or phosphoramidite. This unit discusses four alternative methods for synthesizing nucleoside H‐phosphonate monoesters. The methods are efficient and experimentally simple, and use readily available reagents.     Reduced Arteriovenous Shunting Capacity After Local Heating and Redistribution of Baseline Skin Blood Flow in Type 2 Diabetes Assessed With Velocity-Resolved Quantitative Laser Doppler Flowmetry

    OBJECTIVE-To compare the microcirculatory velocity distribution in type 2 diabetic patients and nondiabetic control subjects at baseline and after local heating. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-The skin blood flow response to local heating (44 degrees C for 20 mm) was assessed in 28 diabetic patients and 29 control subjects using a new velocity-resolved quantitative laser Doppler flowmetry technique (qLDF). The qLDF estimates erythrocyte (RBC) perfusion (velocity X concentration), in a physiologically relevant unit (grams RBC per 100 g tissue X millimeters per second) in a fixed output volume, separated into three velocity regions: v less than1 mm/s, v 1-10 mm/s, and v greater than10 mm/s. RESULTS-The increased blood flow occurs in vessels with a velocity greater than1 mm/s. A significantly lower response in qLDF total perfusion was found in diabetic patients than in control subjects after heat provocation because of less high-velocity blood flow (v greater than10 mm/s). The RBC concentration in diabetic patients increased sevenfold for v between 1 and 10 mm/s, and 15-fold for v greater than10 mm/s, whereas no significant increase was found for v less than1 mm/s. The mean velocity increased from 0.94 to 7.3 mm/s in diabetic patients and from 0.83 to 9.7 mm/s in control subjects. CONCLUSIONS-The perfusion increase occurs in larger shunting vessels and not as an increase in capillary flow. Baseline diabetic patient data indicated a redistribution of flow to higher velocity regions, associated with longer duration of diabetes.     Molecular Dating, Evolutionary Rates, and the Age of the Grasses

    Many questions in evolutionary biology require an estimate of divergence times but, for groups with a sparse fossil record, such estimates rely heavily on molecular dating methods. The accuracy of these methods depends on both an adequate underlying model and the appropriate implementation of fossil evidence as calibration points. We explore the effect of these in Poaceae (grasses), a diverse plant lineage with a very limited fossil record, focusing particularly on dating the early divergences in the group. We show that molecular dating based on a data set of plastid markers is strongly dependent on the model assumptions. In particular, an acceleration of evolutionary rates at the base of Poaceae followed by a deceleration in the descendants strongly biases methods that assume an autocorrelation of rates. This problem can be circumvented by using markers that have lower rate variation, and we show that phylogenetic markers extracted from complete nuclear genomes can be a useful complement to the more commonly used plastid markers. However, estimates of divergence times remain strongly affected by different implementations of fossil calibration points. Analyses calibrated with only macrofossils lead to estimates for the age of core Poaceae ∼51-55 Ma, but the inclusion of microfossil evidence pushes this age to 74-82 Ma and leads to lower estimated evolutionary rates in grasses. These results emphasize the importance of considering markers from multiple genomes and alternative fossil placements when addressing evolutionary issues that depend on ages estimated for important group

    Decoupling the Spread of Grasslands from the Evolution of Grazer-type Herbivores in South America

    The evolution of high-crowned cheek teeth (hypsodonty) in herbivorous mammals during the late Cenozoic is classically regarded as an adaptive response to the near-global spread of grass-dominated habitats. Precocious hypsodonty in middle Eocene (~38 million years (Myr) ago) faunas from Patagonia, South America, is therefore thought to signal Earth’s first grasslands, 20 million years earlier than elsewhere. Here, using a high-resolution, 43–18 million-year record of plant silica (phytoliths) from Patagonia, we show that although open-habitat grasses existed in southern South America since the middle Eocene (~40 Myr ago), they were minor floral components in overall forested habitats between 40 and 18 Myr ago. Thus, distinctly different, continent-specific environmental conditions (arid grasslands versus ash-laden forests) triggered convergent cheek–tooth evolution in Cenozoic herbivores. Hypsodonty evolution is an important example where the present is an insufficient key to the past, and contextual information from fossils is vital for understanding processes of adaptation
