Book Review: Women in business and leadership roles ā What do we know and where do we go next?
Despite various political, social, and cultural movements that focus on gender equality, women in business, and leadership positions, we still face a wide range of challenges that are gender specific. The book Women, Business and Leadership. Gender and Organizations, edited by AlexanderStamatios Antoniou, Cary Cooper, and Caroline Gatrell, provides a comprehensive overview of (some of) these challenges, and highlights what has to be done to achieve equality at work. Efficacy of B-cell-targeted therapy with rituximab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
BACKGROUND: An open-label study indicated that selective depletion of B cells with the use of rituximab led to sustained clinical improvements for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. To confirm these observations, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, controlled study. METHODS: We randomly assigned 161 patients who had active rheumatoid arthritis despite treatment with methotrexate to receive one of four treatments: oral methotrexate (> or =10 mg per week) (control); rituximab (1000 mg on days 1 and 15); rituximab plus cyclophosphamide (750 mg on days 3 and 17); or rituximab plus methotrexate. Responses defined according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) were assessed at week 24 (primary analyses) and week 48 (exploratory analyses). RESULTS: At week 24, the proportion of patients with 50 percent improvement in disease symptoms according to the ACR criteria, the primary end point, was significantly greater with the rituximab-methotrexate combination (43 percent, P=0.005) and the rituximab-cyclophosphamide combination (41 percent, P=0.005) than with methotrexate alone (13 percent). In all groups treated with rituximab, a significantly higher proportion of patients had a 20 percent improvement in disease symptoms according to the ACR criteria (65 to 76 percent vs. 38 percent, P< or =0.025) or had EULAR responses (83 to 85 percent vs. 50 percent, P< or =0.004). All ACR responses were maintained at week 48 in the rituximab-methotrexate group. The majority of adverse events occurred with the first rituximab infusion: at 24 weeks, serious infections occurred in one patient (2.5 percent) in the control group and in four patients (3.3 percent) in the rituximab groups. Peripheral-blood immunoglobulin concentrations remained within normal ranges. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with active rheumatoid arthritis despite methotrexate treatment, a single course of two infusions of rituximab, alone or in combination with either cyclophosphamide or continued methotrexate, provided significant improvement in disease symptoms at both weeks 24 and 48
Singe ferroelectric and chiral magnetic domain of single-crystalline BiFeO in an electric field
We report polarized neutron scattering and piezoresponse force microscopy
studies of millimeter-sized single crystals of multiferroic BiFeO. The
crystals, grown below the Curie temperature, consist of a single ferroelectric
domain. Two unique electric polarization directions, as well as the populations
of equivalent spiral magnetic domains, can be switched reversibly by an
electric field. A ferroelectric monodomain with a single- single-helicity
spin spiral can be obtained. This level of control, so far unachievable in thin
films, makes single-crystal BiFeO a promising object for multiferroics

Magnetoelectricity at room temperature in Bi0.9-xTbxLa0.1FeO3 system
Magnetoelectric compounds with the general formula, Bi0.9-xRxLa0.1FeO3 (R
=Gd, Tb, Dy, etc.), have been synthesized. These show the coexistence of
ferroelectricity and magnetism, possess high dielectric constant and exhibit
magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Such materials may be of great
significance in basic as well as applied research.Comment: 11 pages of text and figure
Electric-field switchable magnetization via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction: FeTiO_3 versus BiFeO_3
In this article we review and discuss a mechanism for coupling between
electric polarization and magnetization that can ultimately lead to
electric-field switchable magnetization. The basic idea is that a ferroelectric
distortion in an antiferromagnetic material can "switch on" the
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which leads to a canting of the
antiferromagnetic sublattice magnetizations, and thus to a net magnetization.
This magnetization M is coupled to the polarization P via a trilinear free
energy contribution of the form P(M x L), where L is the antiferromagnetic
order parameter. In particular, we discuss why such an invariant is present in
R3c FeTiO_3 but not in the isostructural multiferroic BiFeO_3. Finally, we
construct symmetry groups that in general allow for this kind of
