    Death is a taboo subject in our society and our cemeteries are a reflection of our collective repression of the idea of death. Contemporary culture has desacralized our built enviroment by moving our sacred cemeteries from the center of the city, to the outskirts where they are forgotten about. Is there still a place for the cemetery in everyday life? If so, how does one create a place that speaks equally to the aspects of life and death? This thesis is based on the conviction that burial grounds can be integrated into everyday life, and that there should be a place for the sacred in the increasingly secular city. The site is in the South Main Arts District of Memphis, Tennessee, on the grounds of a former cemetery

    Bryophytes and their distribution in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales

    The bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) that occur in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales (latitude 33˚–34˚ S, longitude 151˚–151˚40’ E) are listed and information is provided on their distribution in the region. Species lists are based on herbarium specimens and field collections. 348 bryophyte taxa have been recorded from 70 families, including 225 moss taxa (in 108 genera from 45 families), 120 liverwort taxa (in 51 genera from 24 families) and 3 hornwort taxa (in 3 genera from one family). The moss families with most taxa are the Pottiaceae (with 23 taxa in 13 genera), Bryaceae (with 15 taxa in 3 genera) and Fissidentaceae (with 13 taxa). The largest genera are Fissidens (13 taxa), Campylopus (9) and Macromitrium (8). The liverwort family with the most taxa is Lepidoziaceae, with 29 taxa in 10 genera. The largest liverwort genera are Frullania (11 taxa) and Riccardia (8). The species lists include collections from both bushland and urban areas. Natural features of the Blue Mountains, including topography, altitude, climate and vegetation appear to be important factors influencing the number of bryophyte species recorded from each location. The number of collections from particular locations has been considerably influenced by ease of access, particularly proximity to roads, public transport and railway stations. The species lists include many records from areas that were not accessible to the early collectors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as Wollemi National Park, Gardens of Stone National Park, Newnes Plateau and Kanangra-Boyd National Park

    Two endemic orchid species, Nematoceras dienemum and N. sulcatum, are known from sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. Several additional orchid populations on the island are reported and deistogamy is documented in N. dienemum for the first time. The known population sizes, habitats and locations for both orchid species are documented here, and new information on their biology and population ecology is provided

    Effect of Preheating on the Permeability of Neonatal Rat Stratum Corneum to Alkanols

    We heated flat sheets of neonatal rat stratum corneum for various times at temperatures between 40 and 90°C before determining the permeability coefficient (Kp) of propanol and/or hexanol from water. Below 70°C, Kp remained constant; at 75°C, Kp increased linearly with exposure time; at 80°C and above, there was a large increase in under 2 h, with no further increase on longer heating. There was a 15-fold increase in 6-h Kp between 70°C and 80°C, values being constant above 80°C but at a figure less than for lipid-extracted stratum corneum. Thermal analysis showed that the increase in Kp corresponds to changes in the 80°C lipid endotherm, suggesting that the increased Kp is due to a disordering of the lipid structures. The effect of treating preheated stratum corneum with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) vapor for 16h was also studied. Below 70°C, Kp was increased five-fold, but between 70 and 80°C this difference was eliminated, so that above 80°C the Kp was the same as with heat treatment alone. We concluded that both heat and DMSO affect the lipid structures of stratum corneum. DMSO produced a small, reversible structural change, while the effect of heat is irreversible and produces a greater degree of disorder in the lipid structures, but the lipid still contributed to the barrier effect of stratum corneum

    SUMMARYParasitic nematodes are important and abundant parasites adapted to live a parasitic lifestyle, with these adaptations all aimed at facilitating their survival and reproduction in their hosts. The recently sequenced genomes of fourStrongyloidesspecies, gastrointestinal parasites of humans and other animals, alongside transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of free-living and parasitic stages of their life cycles have revealed a number of protein families with a putative role in their parasitism. Many of these protein families have also been associated with parasitism in other parasitic nematode species, suggesting that these proteins may play a fundamental role in nematode parasitism more generally. Here, we review key protein families that have a putative role inStrongyloides’ parasitism – acetylcholinesterases, astacins, aspartic proteases, prolyl oligopeptidases, proteinase inhibitors (trypsin inhibitors and cystatins), SCP/TAPS and transthyretin-like proteins – and the evidence for their key, yet diverse, roles in the parasitic lifestyle.</jats:p
