Interfaces and data formats for transfer and communication in computer graphic systems

A Graphics System may be seen as a computer-aided environment supporting the application program. The basic elements associated with it are: - Operator (User) - Graphics Support System (Services) - Other User Interface Support System (Services) - Application Functions - Generic Action Routines - Data Base The kernel for the communication between the different parts of such a system is composed of the different data items associated with the communication elements. From the point of view of the user operating such a graphics support system, a simple functional model may be given showing the functional decomposition of the model. The Graphics System is then based on the following basic functional components: - User (Operator of the Computer-Aided Environment based on a Graphics Support System) - Graphics - Graphics Viewing - Request Processing - Graphics Metafiles - Model - Model Metafiles (Design Data) - Model Data Management - Application - Control - Heuristics This model implies a clean separation between application system, application control, graphics support system and model data management functions. This functionality again is based on the transfer of the associated items stored in the corresponding metafiles (graphics, model)

Specification of the CIP3 Print Production Format

In close collaboration with the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics developed the specification of the Print Production Format. A group of 16 well-known manufacturers from various countries was then braught together, which revised and enhanced this specification Finally the format was named CIP3, which really was the name of this group: Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press and Postpress. The main purpose of the CIP3 format is to collect data from prepress into one file, which then can be used to setup printing presses and postpress machines (e.g. for cutting and folding)

Specification of the CIP3 Print Production Format (Version 2.1)

The CIP3 Print Production Format (CIP3 PPF) was specified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in close collaboration with a group called "International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press, and Postpress" (abbreviated as CIP3). This group comprises currently (May 1997) more than 26 well-known manufacturers. The goal of the format is to link printing and post-printing processes closer to the prepress phase and thereby reduce the time necessary for machine setup
