Marine Flora and Fauna of the Northeastern United States: Erect Bryozoa
Forty-nine species of erect Bryozoa from a broad range of Cyclostome, Ctenostome, and Cheilostome families are described and illustrated, and an artificial dichotomous key is provided for their identification. In general, the marine bryozoan faunas of the northeastern coasts of the
United States are poorly known; species records are sparse and voucher collections few, and it is certain that many more species occur in this region than are presently known. The species described here occur in intertidal, coastal or offshore habitats; some are well known and have been recorded on numerous previous occasions, others have been only rarely reported, while a few are known to occur commonly in the north of the region but have yet to be recorded south of Cape Cod. Some of the species described have not been recorded at all on northeastern coasts
of the United States, but are widely distributed in North Atlantic continental shelf habitats and perhaps occur in similar parts of the outer shelf of this region. This fauna is thus provisional, but is intended to stimulate further work on the Bryozoa. (PDF file contains 52 pages.
Current Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) deficiencies and potential improvements utilizing TSO-C91a ELTs
An analysis was conducted of current ELT problems and potential improvements that could be made by employing the TSO-C91a ELTs to replace the current TSO-C91 ELTs. The scope of the study included the following: (1) validate the problems; (2) determine specific failure causes; (3) determine false alarm causes; (4) estimate improvements from TSO-C91a; (5) estimate benefits from replacement of the current ELTs; and (6) determine need and benefits for improved ELT inspection and maintenance. A detailed comparison between the two requirements documents (TSO-C91 and -91a) was made to assess improved performance of the ELT in each category of failure cause and each cause of false alarms. The comparison and analysis resulted in projecting a success of operation rate approximately 3 times the current rate and a reduction in false alarms to 0.25 of those generated by TSO-C91 ELTs. These improvements led to a projection of benefits of approximately 25 additional lives to be saved each year with TSO-C91a ELTs and an improved inspection and maintenance program

Business Plan – Exploration of Just Dogs! Gourmet Franchise Opportunity
During the summer of 2008, Sean and Michelle Ryland studied the possibility of owning their own business. They discovered a franchise, Just Dogs! Gourmet, that bakes and sells dog treats, along with other pet-related merchandise. Following some basic initial research they decided to pursue this enterprise and, after investigating some potential locations for a store, put together a business plan.
Compiling data provided by the franchisor along with data gathered during research, start-up costs of 277,500. At the end of the third full year of business, income before taxes was projected to be 46,480 of their own savings, Sean and Michelle sought to borrow the additional $165,570 of the start-up costs from a bank.
After visiting with three different banks, Sean and Michelle were unsuccessful in obtaining the required financing. In addition to the risk associated with starting a new business in an unstable economy, Sean and Michelle’s personal finances were not favorable for such a large loan. Without funding from the banks, Sean and Michelle were unable to purchase a franchise, so they decided to focus on getting their personal finances in order and investigate other avenues to starting their own business

Sentiment analysis methods for understanding large-scale texts: a case for using continuum-scored words and word shift graphs
The emergence and global adoption of social media has rendered possible the real-time estimation of population-scale sentiment, an extraordinary capacity which has profound implications for our understanding of human behavior. Given the growing assortment of sentiment-measuring instruments, it is imperative to understand which aspects of sentiment dictionaries contribute to both their classification accuracy and their ability to provide richer understanding of texts. Here, we perform detailed, quantitative tests and qualitative assessments of 6 dictionary-based methods applied to 4 different corpora, and briefly examine a further 20 methods. We show that while inappropriate for sentences, dictionary-based methods are generally robust in their classification accuracy for longer texts. Most importantly they can aid understanding of texts with reliable and meaningful word shift graphs if (1) the dictionary covers a sufficiently large portion of a given text’s lexicon when weighted by word usage frequency; and (2) words are scored on a continuous scale
