Physical properties of thermoelectric zinc antimonide using first-principles calculations
We report first principles calculations of the structural, electronic,
elastic and vibrational properties of the semiconducting orthorhombic ZnSb
compound. We study also the intrinsic point defects in order to eventually
improve the thermoelectric properties of this already very promising
thermoelectric material. Concerning the electronic properties, in addition to
the band structure, we show that the Zn (Sb) crystallographically equivalent
atoms are not exactly equivalent from the electronic point of view. Lattice
dynamics, elastic and thermodynamic properties are found to be in good
agreement with experiments and they confirm the non equivalency of the zinc and
antimony atoms from the vibrational point of view. The calculated elastic
properties show a relatively weak anisotropy and the hardest direction is the y
direction. We observe the presence of low energy modes involving both Zn and Sb
atoms at about 5-6 meV, similarly to what has been found in Zn4Sb3 and we
suggest that the interactions of these modes with acoustic phonons could
explain the relatively low thermal conductivity of ZnSb. Zinc vacancies are the
most stable defects and this explains the intrinsic p-type conductivity of
ZnSb.Comment: 33 pages, 8 figure
Presence of blood-sucking mesostigmatic mites in rodents and birds kept in pet stores in the Cracow area, Poland
The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of zoonotic arthropod parasites in small animals
sold in selected pet stores in the Cracow area. The research was conducted in seven pet stores, keeping a total of six
species of rodents and three species of birds. In two shops, two species of mites of the order Mesostigmata were detected
on the animals and in their surrounding: Dermanyssus gallinae, the poultry red mite, and Ornithonyssus bacoti, the rat
mite. Both observed species of mites may be harmful to animals, as well as to people working in the shops or potential
pet owners. This study discusses the possible origin of the parasites and their importance to human health
The influence of geomagnetic field disturbances on the choice of resting sites and dens by selected free-living animals
Pole geomagnetyczne (PGM) jest dla organizmów żywych ważnym biologicznie
czynnikiem, koordynującym w przestrzeni i w czasie, niezbędnym do stymulacji i sterowania
procesami przemiany materii.
siedliskami jeleni, dzików, borsuków, wydr i lisów.
geomagnetycznym.Geomagnetic field is for the living organisms a very significant biological factor, acting
in time and space, indispensable in stimulating and steering of biological processes. So far domestic
and laboratory animals kept in the conditions of naturally or artificially disturbed magnetic
field were the objects of research on impact of geomagnetic field on the animals’organisms. Therefore
the study whether the state of geomagnetic field affected the choice of resting or breeding
sites’ selection of free-living animals was undertaken. The fieldwork was carried out in the forests
of Lutowiska Forest District in Podkarpacie Province in the south-east of Poland and Nawojowa
Frest District inMałopolska Province in the south of Poland. Geomagnetic field in the resting and
breeding sites of red deer, wild boar, badger, otter and fox was measured with geomagnetometer.
The results allow us to conclude that free-living animals take into account geomagnetic field while
selecting resting or nesting sites – red deer, wild boar and otter select places with undisturbed geomagnetic
field while badgers’ dens are situated in the heterogenous geomagnetic field
Heart rate of chosen species of domestic birds
Celem podjętych badań była ocena tempa pracy serca zarodków wybranych gatunków
ptaków domowych: kura domowa, przepiórka japońska, perlica, kaczka piżmowa oraz
gęś biała włoska w trakcie rozwoju embrionalnego. Badania przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem
metody balistokardiografii bezkontaktowej. W początkowym okresie badań (9. 10. doba inkubacji)
widoczny był spadek tempa pracy serca badanych zarodków. Wyjątek stanowi przepiórka,
u której w tym okresie obserwowano wzrost liczby skurczów występujących w jednostce czasu.
W końcowym okresie inkubacji zaobserwowano tendencje spadkowe w tempie pracy serca zarodków
wszystkich badanych gatunków. W trakcie badań stwierdzono, że w dniach poprzedzających
śmierć zarodka występowały duże zakłócenia w zapisach balistokardiograficznych. The aim of this study was analysis of embryos heart rate of some species of domestic
birds: chicken, japanese quail, guinea fowl, duck and goose throughout embryonic development.
The study was conducted with the use non-contact method of ballistocardiography. In the beginning
of incubation (9th–10th days) decrease in heart rate of embryos were observed except quail.
Also in the final period of development in all embryos decrease of heart rate was found out. Great
disturbances in ballistocardiograms were observed on days preceding embryonic deaths
The effects of exposure to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field on the hatchability of domestic chicken embryos (Gallus gallus domesticus)
From the second half of the 20th century there has been a rapid increase in electromagnetic
radiation (EMR), generated in part by mobile phone networks. The aim of the study was to examine
the effects of an electromagnetic field (EMF) with a frequency of 900 MHz on the hatchability of
chicken embryos. The experimental groups were exposed to the electromagnetic field during the entire
incubation period, for 10x4 minutes per day or 1x40 minutes per day. The results obtained indicate that
an electromagnetic field with a frequency of 900 MHz, irrespective of the duration of a single exposure,
significantly accelerates the process of pipping and hatching. In the experimental groups subjected to
electromagnetic radiation the time between pipping and hatching was reduced. No influence of the 900
MHz EMF was observed on the hatching rate, number of developmental defects in the embryos, body
weight, or the number of culled chicks
