Ultrasonic Doppler measurement of renal artery blood flow
An extensive evaluation of the practical and theoretical limitations encountered in the use of totally implantable CW Doppler flowmeters is provided. Theoretical analyses, computer models, in-vitro and in-vivo calibration studies describe the sources and magnitudes of potential errors in the measurement of blood flow through the renal artery, as well as larger vessels in the circulatory system. The evaluation of new flowmeter/transducer systems and their use in physiological investigations is reported
The Community of the Realm: Gower\u27s Account of the Commons in Book V of the Vox Clamantis
Gower\u27s stated intention at the beginning of Book III of the Vox Clamantis to survey the three degrees of the world, i.e. the clerics, knights, and farmers, is not forthcoming in exactly the manner he specifies. Instead, he delivers a lengthy critique of the clergy in Books III and IV and then an account of the secular world apart from the nobility in Book V. This book deals with the rural and urban components of late fourteenth-century English society, that is, the gentry and the bound and free agricultural workers on the one hand and the merchants, artisans, and plebs that comprised the inhabitants of the city on the other. This element of the poet\u27s world is best described as the commons, that component of both society and parliament that has begun to appear by his day. Gower\u27s presentation is accordingly an important early description of a key political, sociological, and economic element in late medieval English society
The Failure of Counsel: Curial Corruption in Book VI of the Vox Clamantis
The king\u27s court is the final element in Gower\u27s analysis of the law in Book VI of the Vox Clamantis prior to the speculum principis that is the book\u27s climax. Having discussed the men of law, judges, sheriffs, jurors, and bailiffs in chapters one through six, the poet now finds fault in chapter seven with the various advisers who surround the king for the purpose of providing him useful counsel in governing the realm. They, too, are found wanting in an analysis of the current situation in England
Ultrasonic Doppler measurement of renal artery blood flow
Studies were made of (1) blood flow redistribution during lower body negative pressure (LBNP), (2) the profile of blood flow across the mitral annulus of the heart (both perpendicular and parallel to the commissures), (3) testing and evaluation of a number of pulsed Doppler systems, (4) acute calibration of perivascular Doppler transducers, (5) redesign of the mitral flow transducers to improve reliability and ease of construction, and (6) a frequency offset generator designed for use in distinguishing forward and reverse components of blood flow by producing frequencies above and below the offset frequency. Finally methodology was developed and initial results were obtained from a computer analysis of time-varying Doppler spectra

"Cross-"ing Comedy: Construction of a Gendered Persona in the Work of Eddie Izzard
This paper examines the construction of personae in paratheatrical performances, ultimately examining the personae of British heterosexual transvestite stand-up comedian Eddie Izzard. The first chapter examines the concept of "gender," in particular its connection with dress and the transvestite lifestyle. The second section provides a summary of Philip Auslander's work in personae in relation to glam rock and stand-up comedy. The work of three performers (Andy Kaufmann, David Bowie, and Roseanne) are compared and contrasted through the relationship between their "personal identity," "performance persona," and "characters." The final chapter analyzes Izzard's Unrepeatable and Sexie performances, looking at the balance between masculine and feminine gender symbols present in his work. His earlier work is heavily marked by the presence of his heterosexual male identity, but as he becomes more comfortable with his own identity as a transvestite, more feminine gender symbols gain control in his work.Department of Theatr
Age-dependent differences in human brain activity using a face- and location-matching task: An fMRI study
Purpose: To evaluate the differences of cortical activation patterns in young and elderly healthy subjects for object and spatial visual processing using a face- and location-matching task. Materials and Methods: We performed a face- and a location-matching task in 15 young (mean age: 28 +/- 9 years) and 19 elderly (mean age: 71 +/- 6 years) subjects. Each experiment consisted of 7 blocks alternating between activation and control condition. For face matching, the subjects had to indicate whether two displayed faces were identical or different. For location matching, the subjects had to press a button whenever two objects had an identical position. For control condition, we used a perception task with abstract images. Functional imaging was performed on a 1.5-tesla scanner using an EPI sequence. Results: In the face-matching task, the young subjects showed bilateral (right 1 left) activation in the occipito-temporal pathway (occipital gyrus, inferior and middle temporal gyrus). Predominantly right hemispheric activations were found in the fusiform gyrus, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (inferior and middle frontal gyrus) and the superior parietal gyrus. In the elderly subjects, the activated areas in the right fronto-lateral cortex increased. An additional activated area could be found in the medial frontal gyrus (right > left). In the location-matching task, young subjects presented increased bilateral (right > left) activation in the superior parietal lobe and precuneus compared with face matching. The activations in the occipito-temporal pathway, in the right fronto-lateral cortex and the fusiform gyrus were similar to the activations found in the face-matching task. In the elderly subjects, we detected similar activation patterns compared to the young subjects with additional activations in the medial frontal gyrus. Conclusion: Activation patterns for object-based and spatial visual processing were established in the young and elderly healthy subjects. Differences between the elderly and young subjects could be evaluated, especially by using a face-matching task. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
First sequence-confirmed case of infection with the new influenza A(H1N1) strain in Germany
Here, we report on the first sequence-confirmed case of infection with the new influenza A(H1N1) virus in Germany. Two direct contacts of the patient were laboratory-confirmed as cases and demonstrate a chain of direct human-to-human transmission
