This work provides geomorphological and geotechnical observations on the amplification of the destructive behaviour of rock falls developed in rocky slopes with a soil rich in organic matter, which are both exposed to high rainfall regimes. The determinant factor of this process would be related to the low geotechnical quality that the organic matter gives to the soil, which experience a sudden
change in its fabric related to the dynamic load, similar to those observed in the quick clays in the fjords of Norway
Spectrometric characterization of amorphous silicon PIN detectors
During the last years, much interest has been dedicated to the use of amorphous silicon PIN diodes as particle and radiation detectors for medical applications. This work presents the spectrometric characterization of PECVD high deposition rate diodes fabricated at our laboratory, with thickness up to 17.5 μm. Results show that the studied devices detect the Am^(241) alpha particles and the medical X-rays generated by a mammograph model Senographe 700T from General Electric. Possible reasons of the observed energy losses are discussed in the lest. Using the SRIM2000 program, the transit of 5.5 MeV alpha particles through a diode was simulated, determining the optimum thickness for these particles to deposit their energy in the intrinsic layer of the diode

polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been scarcely investigated. The aim of our study was to
test for possible associations between gut microbiome and PCOS in late fertile age women and
investigate whether changes in the gut microbiome correlate with PCOS-related metabolic
parameters. Methods: We compared the 16S rRNA sequenced gut microbiome of 102 PCOS women
with 201 age- and body mass index (BMI) matched non-PCOS women. Clinical and biochemical
characteristics of the participants were assessed at ages 31 and 46 and analyzed in the context of
gut microbiome data at the age of 46.
Results: Bacterial diversity indices did not differ significantly between PCOS and controls.
We identified four genera whose balance helps to differentiate between PCOS and non-PCOS. In
the whole cohort, the abundance of two genera from the order Clostridiales was correlated with
several PCOS-related markers. When investigating the gut microbiome composition in PCOS
women with different BMI and glucose tolerance groups, prediabetic PCOS women had
significantly lower alpha diversity and markedly increased abundance of genus Dorea compared
to women with normal glucose tolerance.
Conclusions: Our data indicate that PCOS and non-PCOS women at late fertile age with
similar BMI do not signficantly differ in gut microbiota. However, there are significant microbial
changes in PCOS individuals depending on their metabolic health. Further studies are needed in
order to further understand these changes in more detail.Estonian Research Council grants PUT 1371EMBO Installation grant 3573European Regional Development Fund Project No. 15-0012

Controlled transdermal release of antioxidant ferulate by a porous Sc(III) MOF
The Sc(III) MOF-type MFM-300(Sc) is demonstrated in this study to be stable under physiological conditions (PBS), biocompatible (to human skin cells), and an efficient drug carrier for the long-term controlled release (through human skin) of antioxidant ferulate. MFM-300(Sc) also preserves the antioxidant pharmacological effects of ferulate while enhancing the bio-preservation of dermal skin fibroblasts, during the delivery process. These discoveries pave the way toward the extended use of Sc(III)-based MOFs as drug delivery systems (DDSs)
Alternative Eco-Friendly Methods in the Control of Post-Harvest Decay of Tropical and Subtropical Fruits
The effectiveness on several fruits by the application of alternative methods against fungi is summarized in the present chapter. Several investigations have reported the efficacy of these technologies for controlling fungal infections. Currently, high post-harvest loses have been reported due to several factors such as inefficient management, lack of training for farmers, and problems with appropriate conditions for storage of fruits and vegetables. Even now, in many countries, post-harvest disease control is led by the application of chemical fungicides. However, in this time, awareness about fungi resistance, environmental, and health issues has led to the research of eco-friendly and effective alternatives for disease management. The pathogen establishment on fruits can be affected by the application of GRAS compounds like chitosan, essential oils, salts, among others; besides, their efficacy can be enhanced by their combination with other technologies like ultrasound. Thus, the applications of these alternatives are suitable approaches for post-harvest management of fruits
The amphibian Ambystoma velasci is an endemic species of Mexico subject to special protection according to Mexican regulations. One of the conservation strategies is its maintenance in captivity, being feeding one of the most important aspects to consider. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of Biocolina® in the diet of adult Ambystoma velasci as a growth promoter. Four Biocolina® treatments (0%, 1%, 2% and 3%) were used to evaluate the productive parameters and to determine the linear and quadratic (P<0.05) effect of the addition of this supplement to the feed. The results indicated a linear effect on the weight of axolotl treated with feed enriched with 2% Biocolina®, and feed consumption was reduced with the 1% dose (P<0.05). Biocolina® improved the weight of the salamanders and optimized feed consumption at the 1% dose, so it is considered that this supplement could be an alternative to improve the quality of axolotl feed and reduce production costs per feeding.O anfibio Ambystoma velasci é uma espécie endêmica do México sujeita a proteção especial de acordo com a regulamentação mexicana. Social class, well-being, and general affectivity during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ibero-America
