    The compressive failure of graphite/epoxy plates with circular holes

    The behavior of fiber reinforced composite plates containing a circular cutout was characterized in terms of geometry (thickness, width, hole diameter), and material properties (bending/extensional stiffness). Results were incorporated in a data base for use by designers in determining the ultimate strength of such a structure. Two thicknesses, 24 plies and 48 plies were chosen to differentiate between buckling and strength failures due to the presence of a cutout. Consistent post-buckling strength was exhibited by both laminate configurations

    Observing the Galápagos–EUC interaction : insights and challenges

The definitive version was published in Journal of Physical Oceanography 40 (2010): 2768–2777, doi:10.1175/2010JPO4461.1.Although sustained observations yield a description of the mean equatorial current system from the western Pacific to the eastern terminus of the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) array, a comprehensive observational dataset suitable for describing the structure and pathways of the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) east of 95°W does not exist and therefore climate models are unconstrained in a region that plays a critical role in ocean–atmosphere coupling. Furthermore, ocean models suggest that the interaction between the EUC and the GalĂĄpagos Islands (92°W) has a striking effect on the basic state and coupled variability of the tropical Pacific. To this end, the authors interpret historical measurements beginning with those made in conjunction with the discovery of the Pacific EUC in the 1950s, analyze velocity measurements from an equatorial TAO mooring at 85°W, and analyze a new dataset from archived shipboard ADCP measurements. Together, the observations yield a possible composite description of the EUC structure and pathways in the eastern equatorial Pacific that may be useful for model validation and guiding future observation.Karnauskas acknowledges the WHOI Penzance Endowed Fund in Support of Assistant Scientists

    Determination of Short Crack Depth with an Acoustic Microphone

    For the prediction of the lifetime of any component, subjected to alternating stresses, the knowledge of the growth behavior of defects is essential. Most methods of monitoring the propagation of short cracks are confined to measuring the length of the crack on the surface [1]. The depth of the crack must be determined indirectly, assuming the shape of the crack. Acoustic waves, on the other hand, offer the possibility of measuring the depth directly, since acoustic waves can penetrate into the material. This allows the measurement not only of the growth behavior of fatigue cracks on the surface, but also changes of the crack geometry inside the specimen. Current applications of direct acoustic monitoring of crack growth have been developed for cracks of the order of millimeters. One acoustic depth measurement technique is the Time-of-Flight-Diffraction (TOFD) technique [2–4], which is based on timing measurements of the scattered signals from the defect. Our investigations are concerned with the application of TOFD technique for the depth measurement of short cracks (70–200 ÎŒm in surface length) using a scanning acoustic microscope (SAM) [5–6]. Depth measurements were first carried out on cracks in the transparent material polystyrene. This allows a direct comparison between acoustic and optical depth measurements. Subsequently, the depth of fatigue cracks in an A1 alloy were measured, and the acoustic measurements were compared with direct measurements of the crack geometry by sectioning the crack

    Elastic singularities such as crack tips, when in motion through a medium that is itself vibrating, are subject to forces orthogonal to the direction of motion and thus impossible to determine by energy considerations alone.     Facing Forward, Looking Back: Religion and Film Studies in the Last Decade

    On November 17, 2012, at the American Academy of Religion’s National Meeting, the Religion, Film, and Visual Culture Group sponsored a session entitled, “Facing Forward, Looking Back: Religion and Film Studies in the Last Decade.” The session focused on four recent books in the field of Religion and Film: John Lyden’s Film as Religion: Myths, Morals and Rituals (NYU, 2003); S. Brent Plate’s Religion and Film: Cinema and the Re-Creation of the World (Wallflower Press, 2009); Antonio Sison’s World Cinema, Theology, and the Human: Humanity in Deep Focus (Routledge, 2012); and Sheila Nayar’s The Sacred and the Cinema: Reconfiguring the ‘Genuinely’ Religious Film (Continuum, 2012). Each author was present to make remarks on his or her book, and then three respondents made remarks on each of the books as well. The respondents were Stefanie Knauss, Rachel Wagner, and Jolyon Thomas. Joe Kickasola introduced the session, and moderated the discussion that followed. This session represented a rare opportunity for scholars of the field of Religion and Film to reflect on the past, present, and future directions of the field, and the Journal of Religion and Film is happy to be able to include the remarks of all the presenters here
