The 6C** Sample and the Highest Redshift Radio Galaxies

Possible High-Redshift, Low-Luminosity AGN Activity in the Hubble Deep Field
In the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), twelve candidate sources of high-redshift (z
> 3.5) AGN activity have been identified. The color selection criteria were
established by passing spectra of selected quasars and Seyfert galaxies
(appropriately redshifted and modified for "Lyman forest" absorption), as well
as stars, observed normal and starburst galaxies, and galaxy models for various
redshifts through the filters used for the HDF observations. The actual
identification of AGN candidates also involved convolving a
Laplacian-of-Gaussian filter with the HDF images, thereby removing relatively
flat galactic backgrounds and leaving only the point-like components in the
centers. Along with positions and colors, estimated redshifts and absolute
magnitudes are reported, with the candidates falling toward the faint end of
the AGN luminosity function. One candidate has been previously observed
spectroscopically, with a measured redshift of 4.02. The number of sources
reported here is consistent with a simple extrapolation of the observed quasar
luminosity function to magnitude 30 in B_Johnson. Implications for ionization
of the intergalactic medium and for gravitational lensing are discussed.Comment: 10 pages LaTex plus 2 separate files (Table 1 which is a two-page

Covariant spinor representation of and quantization of the spinning relativistic particle
A covariant spinor representation of is constructed for the
quantization of the spinning relativistic particle. It is found that, with
appropriately defined wavefunctions, this representation can be identified with
the state space arising from the canonical extended BFV-BRST quantization of
the spinning particle with admissible gauge fixing conditions after a
contraction procedure. For this model, the cohomological determination of
physical states can thus be obtained purely from the representation theory of

Examining the relationship between pubertal stage, adolescent health behaviours and stress
Background. This paper examines the associations between puberty and three important health behavlours (smoking, food intake and exercise) and explores whether these associations are mediated by puberty's relationship to stress and psychological difficulties.Method. Data were taken from the first year of the ongoing, 5-year, Health and Behaviours in Teenagers Study (HABITS). This is a school-based study set in 36 schools in London. In the first year of the study, 4320 students (2578 boys, 1742 girls) in their first year of secondary education took part.Results. Among girls, being more pubertally advanced was associated with a greater likelihood of having tried smoking. Among boys, being more pubertally advanced was associated with a greater likelihood of having tried smoking, a higher intake of high-fat food and higher levels of exercise. More pubertally advanced girls experienced more stress but not more psychological difficulties. There were no associations between puberty and either stress or psychological difficulties in boys. Stress and psychological difficulties were associated with health behaviours in girls and boys, but neither of these factors mediated the relationship between pubertal stage and health behaviours found in girls.Conclusions. These results suggest that the onset of puberty has a marked effect on the development of health behaviours. Puberty was related to an acceleration of the development of unhealthy behaviours, except for exercise behaviour in boys, where advanced puberty was associated with more exercise. These changes were unrelated to adolescent issues of stress and a causal explanation for these associations must be sought elsewhere
A complete distribution of redshifts for sub-millimetre galaxies in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey UDS field

All rights reserved.Sub-milllimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most luminous star-forming galaxies in the Universe, however their properties remain hard to determine due to the difficulty of identifying their optical\slash near-infrared counterparts. One of the key steps to determining the nature of SMGs is measuring a redshift distribution representative of the whole population. We do this by applying statistical techniques to a sample of 761 850m sources from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey observations of the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) Field. We detect excess galaxies around per cent of the 850m positions in the deep UDS catalogue, giving us the first 850m selected sample to have virtually complete optical\slash near-infrared redshift information. Under the reasonable assumption that the redshifts of the excess galaxies are representative of the SMGs themselves, we derive a median SMG redshift of , with 68 per cent of SMGs residing between $1.07Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
A class of quadratic deformations of Lie superalgebras
We study certain Z_2-graded, finite-dimensional polynomial algebras of degree
2 which are a special class of deformations of Lie superalgebras, which we call
quadratic Lie superalgebras. Starting from the formal definition, we discuss
the generalised Jacobi relations in the context of the Koszul property, and
give a proof of the PBW basis theorem. We give several concrete examples of
quadratic Lie superalgebras for low dimensional cases, and discuss aspects of
their structure constants for the `type I' class. We derive the equivalent of
the Kac module construction for typical and atypical modules, and a related
direct construction of irreducible modules due to Gould. We investigate in
detail one specific case, the quadratic generalisation gl_2(n/1) of the Lie
superalgebra sl(n/1). We formulate the general atypicality conditions at level
1, and present an analysis of zero-and one-step atypical modules for a certain

No evidence for a `redshift cut-off' for the most powerful classical double radio sources
We use three samples (3CRR, 6CE and 6C*) to investigate the radio luminosity
function (RLF) for the `most powerful' low-frequency selected radio sources. We
find that the data are well fitted by a model with a constant co-moving space
density at high redshift as well as by one with a declining co-moving space
density above some particular redshift. This behaviour is very similar to that
inferred for steep-spectrum radio quasars by Willott et al (1998) in line with
the expectations of Unified Schemes. We conclude that there is as yet no
evidence for a `redshift cut-off' in the co-moving space densities of powerful
classical double radio sources, and rule out a cut-off at z < 2.5.Comment: To appear in `The Hy-redshift universe: Galaxy formation and

The Lockman Hole Project: new constraints on the sub-mJy source counts from a wide-area 1.4 GHz mosaic
This paper is part of a series discussing the results obtained in the
framework of a wide international collaboration - the Lockman Hole Project -
aimed at improving the extensive multiband coverage available in the Lockman
Hole region, through novel deep, wide-area, multifrequency (60, 150, 350 MHz,
and 1.4 GHz) radio surveys. This multifrequency, multi-band information will be
exploited to get a comprehensive view of star formation and active galactic
nucleus activities in the high-redshift Universe from a radio perspective. In
this paper, we present novel 1.4 GHz mosaic observations obtained with the
Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. With an area coverage of 6.6 deg2, this
is the largest survey reaching an rms noise of 11 uJy/beam. In this paper, we
present the source catalogue (~6000 sources with flux densities S>55 uJy
(5sigma), and we discuss the 1.4 GHz source counts derived from it. Our source
counts provide very robust statistics in the flux range 0.1<S<1 mJy, and are in
excellent agreement with other robust determinations obtained at lower and
higher flux densities. A clear excess is found with respect to the counts
predicted by the semi-empirical radio sky simulations developed in the
framework of the Square Kilometre Array Simulated Skies project. A preliminary
analysis of the identified (and classified) sources suggests this excess is to
be ascribed to star-forming galaxies, which seem to show a steeper evolution
