Poynting's theorem and energy conservation in the propagation of light in bounded media
Starting from the Maxwell-Lorentz equations, Poynting's theorem is
reconsidered. The energy flux vector is introduced as S_e=(E x B)/mu_0 instead
of E x H, because only by this choice the energy dissipation can be related to
the balance of the kinetic energy of the matter subsystem. Conservation of the
total energy as the sum of kinetic and electromagnetic energy follows. In our
discussion, media and their microscopic nature are represented exactly by their
susceptibility functions, which do not necessarily have to be known. On this
footing, it can be shown that energy conservation in the propagation of light
through bounded media is ensured by Maxwell's boundary conditions alone, even
for some frequently used approximations. This is demonstrated for approaches
using additional boundary conditions and the dielectric approximation in
detail, the latter of which suspected to violate energy conservation for

A random laser as a dynamical network
The mode dynamics of a random laser is investigated in experiment and theory. The laser consists of a ZnCdO/ZnO multiple quantum well with air-holes that provide the necessary feedback. Time-resolved measurements reveal multi-mode spectra with individually developing features but no variation from shot to shot. These findings are qualitatively reproduced with a model that exploits the specifics of a dilute system of weak scatterers and can be interpreted in terms of a lasing network. Introducing the phase-sensitive node coherence reveals new aspects of the self-organization of the laser field. Lasing is carried by connected links between a subset of scatterers, the fields on which are oscillating coherently in phase. In addition, perturbing feedback with possibly unfitting phases from frustrated other scatterers is suppressed by destructive superposition. We believe that our findings are representative at least for weakly scattering random lasers. A generalization to random laser with dense and strong scatterers seems to be possible when using a more complex scattering theory for this case.Peer Reviewe
A nanometer-scale optical electrometer
Self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots show remarkable optical and spin
coherence properties, which have lead to a concerted research effort examining
their potential as a quantum bit for quantum information science1-6. Here, we
present an alternative application for such devices, exploiting recent
achievements of charge occupation control and the spectral tunability of the
optical emission of quantum dots by electric fields7 to demonstrate
high-sensitivity electric field measurement. In contrast to existing
nanometer-scale electric field sensors, such as single electron transistors8-11
and mechanical resonators12,13, our approach relies on homodyning light
resonantly Rayleigh scattered from a quantum dot transition with the excitation
laser and phase sensitive lock-in detection. This offers both static and
transient field detection ability with high bandwidth operation and near unity
quantum efficiency. Our theoretical estimation of the static field sensitivity
for typical parameters, 0.5 V/m/ \surd Hz, compares favorably to the
theoretical limit for single electron transistor-based electrometers. The
sensitivity level of 5 V/m/ \surd Hz we report in this work, which corresponds
to 6.4 * 10-6 e/ \surd Hz at a distance of 12 nm, is worse than this
theoretical estimate, yet higher than any other result attained at 4.2 K or
higher operation temperature

Ancestral mitogenome capture of the Southeast Asian banded linsang
Utilising a reconstructed ancestral mitochondrial genome of a clade to design hybridisation capture baits can provide the opportunity for recovering mitochondrial sequences from all its descendent and even sister lineages. This approach is useful for taxa with no extant close relatives, as is often the case for rare or extinct species, and is a viable approach for the analysis of historical museum specimens. Asiatic linsangs (genus Prionodon) exemplify this situation, being rare Southeast Asian carnivores for which little molecular data is available. Using ancestral capture we recover partial mitochondrial genome sequences for seven banded linsangs (P. linsang) from historical specimens, representing the first intraspecific genetic dataset for this species. We additionally assemble a high quality mitogenome for the banded linsang using shotgun sequencing for time-calibrated phylogenetic analysis. This reveals a deep divergence between the two Asiatic linsang species (P. linsang, P. pardicolor), with an estimated divergence of ~12 million years (Ma). Although our sample size precludes any robust interpretation of the population structure of the banded linsang, we recover two distinct matrilines with an estimated tMRCA of ~1 Ma. Our results can be used as a basis for further investigation of the Asiatic linsangs, and further demonstrate the utility of ancestral capture for studying divergent taxa without close relatives
Inhibition of the growth of Bacillus subtilis DSM10 by a newly discovered antibacterial protein from the soil metagenome
A functional metagenomics based approach exploiting the microbiota of suppressive soils from an organic field site has succeeded in the identification of a clone with the ability to inhibit the growth of Bacillus subtilis DSM10. Sequencing of the fosmid identified a putative β-lactamase-like gene abgT. Transposon mutagenesis of the abgT gene resulted in a loss in ability to inhibit the growth of B. subtilis DSM10. Further analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence of AbgT revealed moderate homology to esterases, suggesting that the protein may possess hydrolytic activity. Weak lipolytic activity was detected; however the clone did not appear to produce any β-lactamase activity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the protein is a member of the family VIII group of lipase/esterases and clusters with a number of proteins of metagenomic origin. The abgT gene was sub-cloned into a protein expression vector and when introduced into the abgT transposon mutant clones restored the ability of the clones to inhibit the growth of B. subtilis DSM10, clearly indicating that the abgT gene is involved in the antibacterial activity. While the precise role of this protein has yet to fully elucidated, it may be involved in the generation of free fatty acid with antibacterial properties. Thus functional metagenomic approaches continue to provide a significant resource for the discovery of novel functional proteins and it is clear that hydrolytic enzymes, such as AbgT, may be a potential source for the development of future antimicrobial therapies
Mortality from Ischemic Heart Disease and Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2) in Four U.S. Wheat-Producing States: A Hypothesis-Generating Study
In this ecologic study I examined ischemic heart disease (IHD) and diabetes mortality in rural agricultural counties of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, in association with environmental exposure to chlorophenoxy herbicides, using wheat acreage as a surrogate exposure. I collected data on agricultural land use and 1979–1998 mortality from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites, respectively. Counties were grouped based on percentage of land area dedicated to wheat farming. Poisson relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), comparing high- and medium- with low-wheat counties, were obtained for IHD, the subcategories acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and coronary atherosclerosis (CAS), and diabetes, adjusting for sex, age, mortality cohort, and poverty index. Mortality from IHD was modestly increased (RR = 1.08; 95% CI, 1.04–1.12). Analyses of its two major forms were more revealing. Compared with low-wheat counties, mortality in high-wheat counties from AMI increased (RR = 1.20; 95% CI, 1.14–1.26), and mortality from CAS decreased (RR = 0.89; 95% CI, 0.83–0.96). Mortality from AMI was more pronounced for those < 65 years of age (RR = 1.31; 95% CI 1.22–1.39). Mortality from type 2 diabetes increased (RR = 1.16; 95% CI, 1.08–1.24). These results suggest that the underlying cause of mortality from AMI and type 2 diabetes increased and the underlying cause of mortality from CAS decreased in counties where a large proportion of the land area is dedicated to spring and durum wheat farming. Firm conclusions on causal inference cannot be reached until more definitive studies have been conducted
Spin-orbit coupled particle in a spin bath
We consider a spin-orbit coupled particle confined in a quantum dot in a bath
of impurity spins. We investigate the consequences of spin-orbit coupling on
the interactions that the particle mediates in the spin bath. We show that in
the presence of spin-orbit coupling, the impurity-impurity interactions are no
longer spin-conserving. We quantify the degree of this symmetry breaking and
show how it relates to the spin-orbit coupling strength. We identify several
ways how the impurity ensemble can in this way relax its spin by coupling to
phonons. A typical resulting relaxation rate for a self-assembled Mn-doped ZnTe
quantum dot populated by a hole is 1 s. We also show that decoherence
arising from nuclear spins in lateral quantum dots is still removable by a spin
echo protocol, even if the confined electron is spin-orbit coupled.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
